If true, that's pretty lame on their part but I guess minimal effort equals minimal cost. This is always a risk when it comes to multiplat; there's not much impetus on devs to use special features of a console just to please us. Why bother to please the Wii U crowd more than the P60 crowd?

I agree. Journalists this gen just pissed on the Wii and essentially ignored it unless they really had to talk about it (Skyward Sword for instance). Terms like waggle became commonplace and it was just conspicuous in its absence from discusssions compared to the other consoles. Nintendo themselves were derided and laughed at and it feels like in one generation Nintendo became lepers. It could be just that I started following the scene more this generation that I noticed it, but the hate was pretty obvious.

Next gen will be no different if Wii U is noticeably less powerful than the others. Basically graphics equals awesomeness equals true gaming and the 360 (PS3 too but to a lesser extent) seems to have stolen the heart of gamers and journalists this time around.

Add in the tablet, which we all know isnt a tablet but a touch controller, and I guarantee it will be joked about and compared to iPads (unfavourably and with great disdain) for the next 5 years.

Say if you wanted to play wii U in your bedroom could you unplug it from the tv (in living room) plug it in your bedroom without a tv and still play?

If you mean 'will the system work without a TV connected' then I believe yes, as Nintendo have said 'this feels like we are leaving our parents' home' or something, regarding how it is the first Nintendo home system where every part of the experience is a Nintendo product (no TV required).
 
Since it seems like it was very easy to port Darksiders II to the Wii U, any chance we get the original Darksiders as well? I would love it if they put them both out in a double pack for the Wii U at launch.

I think that the important thing to remember is that when somebody posts a viewpoint that is seen as extreme, it is counterproductive to either (A) attack the person or (B) post a viewpoint that is equally extreme but in the opposite direction, unless you fully believe in that opposing viewpoint.



Also, I heard that the Wii U padlet will also have haptics on its back-touch area.

Disappointed to hear that Wii U is no more powerful than Xbox 360. I guess while the amount of RAM may be surprising, a full gig of it has been made unavailable to developers so that an entire library of Charles Martinet voice clips are in memory at all times.

I dunno, this seems to indicate that PS4 will offer a significant technological upgrade, especially if they are using "through-silicon-vias" in the RAM department (Hybrid Memory Cube?).

Bring it on, I say. I like that the consoles all offer something unique.

I would imagine so (basically what Rhod said). If not, then it would be a pretty big mistake by Nintendo (imo).
 
I can read perfectly well (English is not my second language) but there are times I need to read Ideamans posts three or four times before it starts to make sense. Allthough, I'm a bit lost now...

This is just a baton pass.
Several multi-plat games will not do much to differentiate themselves between different versions for various reasons including, I suspect, not to upset other console manufacturers.
Once WiiU has established itself, or when another console gets released, the games will start to look better than this gen.

Positive aspect of the article is the development time that is being put into the controller. For their next game, their learning curve or development on the controller will be much shorter.

My worst nightmare* is that each generation will be exactly identical to the last with the sole differentiating factor of "more polygons and visual tricks". I swear, if there are any systems with a sixth-generation controller in the ninth generation, I will make a big sadface.

A game to be truly in 720P, means everything, including textures, should also be in 720; just polygons being rendered in 720P doesn't cut it.

What I am really concerned about, is that if it will have a strong library at the right price after launch to prevent me from getting a PS3/360 instead (I own a PC and Wii, no HD console; if it wasn't for Wii U, I would have already bought one last year)

Any semblance of professionalism that they had retained from the GameCube era went out the window as far as Wii/Nintendo coverage went. I've grown to largely loathe most gaming media outlets, to the point where I'll be celebrating if.. nevermind.. must.. restrain.. self..

I read this as "Wii U is as fast as Nextbox which is as fast as in most situations but faster in one scenario than the PS4"

edit: I think now that you must have meant "Wii will come out shortly before Nextbox, which will come out well before PS4; the equal signs and greater-than sign is a big time arrow". Is that actually the case? Because that's not very dumb at all.


....I now want an official "[AniHawk]" tag on gaf to be activated. Then we can put in a "srsbsns" bookmarklet that makes anything so encapsulated disappear for when we want to actually have real discussions.
 
People should just stop discussing the difference in horsepower between the WiiU, the Xbox 360 and PS3, as well as Sony's and Microsoft's upcoming consoles (which, by the way, are not even confirmed yet to be in development) and just think about this:

The WiiU is a Nintendo console with probably at least the horsepower of twice the Xbox 360.
You are going to play new iteration of game series' that already look awesome and astounding on the Wii (namely Mario, Zelda, Metroid).
You will be able to play these new games with even better graphics and in HD (at least 720p. 60 fps are pretty much guaranteed, because, well...we're talking about Nintendo here).

To quote a wise man from GAF (whose name I forgot):
"This tickles my mind vagina."

And WHOOOHOOHOO BOY, DOES IT TICKLE THAT VAGINA GOOD!

So please, just stop comparing a fancy, new Ferrari with a fancy, 5 to 7 year old Ferrari or even a concept art of a fancy Ferrari that leaked on the internet and is not confirmed to be in development.

I think this is one of my favorite aspects of this system. An actually portable home console. I will be taking the entire system in my backpack quite a bit to play it wherever I can plug it up.

Edit: I clarified it for some of you.

Except that it's also been stated that the controller can only be a certain distance away from the console to play games.
I don't know if it's been said that you can put smaller games (like, say, WiiWare or VC games) on it and actually take it with you to play these games on the go.

You're ignoring: fabrication process (28nm vs. 40nm/45nm), casing size which leads to limitations of how fast hardware can be, transistor counts, and more.

Basically you're mistaken.

Taking the console, power cables, controller with you everywhere you go is no more portable than any taking any other console on the go.

With this all you need is the power cable and an outlet. With a wii, you need all of the cables, controllers, and on top of that, a TV. Seems a little more portable, don't you think? Set the backpack down, plug in the system and game. It's pretty simple to understand.

Of course I don't think this method would be practical for everyone, but it's something that wouldn't bother me. Taking 3 items to have console quality games anywhere you can find an outlet, that's awesome.

EVERY SINGLE MULTI PLATFORM GAME WILL BE COMPARED TO WIIU GAMES

So if you think Nintendo are going to deliver a system that journos can rip on before it's out the door, you're all as stupidly psychotic as BurntPork was.

I expect a very very noticeable difference in graphic fidelity. They need to steal E3.

I also expect that very few devs (The ones that actually keep quiet), actually have the current dev kits (The ones that get called out to Japan and come back silent)
The rest will get them at E3 or just before, to bump up graphics in the run up to launch.

I can't believe we're still having these pages of silliness, bought upon by a few words, latched upon by the trolls, suckling at the teat of despair and doom.

Nintendo couldn't keep Wii going as it couldn't get multi-platform games due to graphics issues.
Will they want to go there again???

The Wii brand name is associated with casual gamers and will not be taken serious by many hardcore gamers.

Hardcore gamers will just think "Oh god, not another Wii".

I think Nintendo needs to rebrand themselves and their image if they want to get the hardcore gamer market. A new name for their console would be the right direction.
 
Eh, even if the Wii U versions look better, it will not be reported as such at all.

Do you not remember when the footage reel last year was "Looks like launch 360 games" or "Looks worse than PS3/360 footage"?

Don't worry. Most of us are in fact rather hygenic. It seems that when a comparison happens between Wii U and either the currrent HD Twins or Sony's or MS's next generation consoles, then those smelly buggers emerge to claim doom and gloom.

Yeah, gaming journalism is dead. Barely any of the major gaming sites or blogs could be described as actually participating in journalism. What they write has less to do with informing us about our hobby and more to do with trying to impress the reader with how jaded and dismissive they can act. This blasé, self-entitled attitude has bred a generation of "hardcore" gamers who have little appreciation for what constitutes good game design or graphics, let alone the incredible amount of work that goes into making games. They think that just as long as a console has the "power to handle them", tons of incredibly life-like games will just magically appear, and studios won't go bankrupt in the process. Thanks, gaming media - way to keep people's expectations in check.
