They actually have gone out of their way for third parties providing free middleware and listening to what third parties want when it comes to hardware, etc...
I wouldn't put much stock in something(no Activision support) that makes absolutely no sense.

It's easily done; don't offer stripped down versions for free elsewhere.
There is little to no value in Nintendo gambling their own consoles for a nebulous iOS future.
We already know Vicarious Visions is working on a Wii U title.

Just because they won't (at this point) doesn't mean they shouldn't. Investors and speculators can do a whole lot of harm to a company's stock.
How do you figure they dropped the ball already? Months before it's even out and without us knowing anything at all?
The only negative things we heard are from anonymous developers, which will most likely be jaded people with a grudge against Nintendo (the remark about Mario not needing physics clearly tells you that).
If the situation is dire again with 3rd party games on the WiiU it's probably the last console you need to endure that with anyway. I seriously doubt that after the next bunch we will even have seperate consoles (hope not anyway).

It will probably never happen considering how secretive Nintendo is, but I'd love to get a book on this console's development somewhere in the future, recounting internal and third party stories, following the rumours, and delving into how many redesigns this thing actually had.

To be fair, what's going to get mass market people to buy the Wii U? The people who want a tablet already have one and so that leaves hardcore gamers. Nintendo fans will buy it and people who want Mario and the like, but why would anyone buy a third party game on the Wii U if the graphics are worse than the xbox and ps3? Personally, when I have all three new systems I will only buy exclusives for the Wii U.

I really doubt that Nintendo gives EA free hands, so to speak. Every decition that EA makes, if any, must be approved by Nintendo first. I cant really think that it is being any different at least.
Can you use iOS apps/games on all of these devices? The qoute in the OP is referring to iOS stuff being shared on different platforms:

The public has also been eating up smartphones and tablets as though they've been in the desert for 40 days without food. Many people have spent money on those devices in stead of handhelds. That is a loss for Nintendo. It's going to be interesting to see how successful Nintendo is with their hardware in a few years as the public becomes more accustomed with all purpose devices and as said devices increase in power and tech.

I think you are forgetting that Nintendo's stock is not looking healthy. Their investors are getting very agitated and are losing faith in the company. Pretty much all market analysts have a negative outlook on Nintendo at the moment and their words most definitely affect Nintendo as a company. The way that the stock is heading shows that Nintendo has failed to convince investors that it's plan for the future is sound which indicates that there may be more problems that we as the public have not even heard about yet.
Also the 3ds is not a success, far from it. It showed Nintendo's lack of awareness of its competitors during the launch and since launch sales have been middling compared to most peoples predictions.

considering that nintendo has the best selling consoles and handhelds, maybe we should be asking for.... well pretty much every other developer to go to ios and for sony and microsoft to get out of the hardware market for greener pastures in ios land. No. Nintendo would not even remotely remain as profitable on iOS, and short of iOS being the latest hot thing in the eyes of investors, there is no good reason to enter that field.

Which is why I have said to find a way to offer their IP's in some form to iOS while keeping the full version on their own hardware. Give iOS folks an opportunity to experience the licenses and games and do so in a way that would create interest to experience the full version on Nintendo's hardware.

The market size for handhelds has shrunk considerably. Microsoft has kinect and the hardcore. Sony has the strong hardware and the hardcore as well. Nintendo did well with the wii and ds mostly due to the same market that is flocking to the iOS ecosystem en mass. The 3ds really showed this. It makes sense for them to tap into the iOS market first if any of the big 3 were to do it...
