Yeah I don't understand why such a huge deal is made about disallowed/allowed goals like that when they lost 5-1. Yeah attitudes change after a goal like that but 5-1 come on.
without it the score would have been 1-1 for a period of time
i can tell you as a referee assessor myself (and referee) that every single time you have an impact like that on a match, you lose a LOT of points on the scorebook.
Final score never matters to referees bosses. What matters is did the referee have a direct impact on the game, and if so:
1) was the impact warranted (red card for example)
2) Did the referee have an influence on the game that should not have happened
Any time you make a decision which significantly affects a game you are marked on it.
Generally that is a sending off, goal or offside decision. Every single one you make, at the higher levels you are reviewed at the ground by assesors and then also on video after the match. If it is found your decisions had a gross impact on the game and they were wrong, you lose marks, and if its very bad, dropped divisions for 1-2 weeks to get your head right.
I assume the FA is the same, although the Elite panel is a bit of a protected species. I feel sorry for Atkinson, it was spur of the moment, and he is going to regret it for a long time, but you should never ever guess.
Oh to be a fly on the wall during his assessment this week.
