And if the entire plot made no goddamn sense and if they abruptly shifted from weird schizophrenic action/comedy to a hastily-pasted-together-with-spit-scotch-tape-and-gum "love" story between generic no-personality MC and a white-haired mentally disabled otaku spunk rag with no distinguishing features and a personality so devoid of anything resembling characterization that it makes Qui-Gon Jinn look like Hamlet in comparison. Oh (ending spoilers)

Why are you ignoring the multitudes of objective criticism made against the show here? I don't care if you like the show but sticking your fingers in your ears and ignoring stuff like that and just saying the only reason people here hate it is because they hate Key is downright false and really annoying.

This was truly awful. Why does one of the girls look like she just walked out of Bodyline? Obviously she must be working it because everyone seems to be hitting on her. The first five minutes went okay but after that it kind of just spiraled out of control. Not knowing mahjong everything revolving around the game was completely obtuse to me. Not world ending but it becomes immediately obvious that the show has no intention of explaining any of the intricacies. Because of this I had to question, why mahjong? It mostly just seems like an excuse to tie the series to a specific subject and name drop terminology. Unlike Chihayafuru where the characters appreciation for the sport is pretty plainly laid out I have no idea why these girls like mahjong so much, and it doesn't seem like there's much love for the game in the way its portrayed in the show.
So I was expecting some slow character build up that would maybe do some of these things and bring the girls together or something. Nope, nine minutes in you get the bonding montage. When things finally return to the story itself instead of the girls interacting with one another on any level there's a third party info dump on the older teacher and it turns out the group has to break up. Then there are multiple time skips without any context as to how much time has passed, and part of the group rejoins in their old stomping grounds to join forces to fight their old friend. Great, only I have no idea who is who because of the time jump. The only characters ever really put under the spotlight is the ponytail girl, so everyone else is just kind of irrelevant and its hard to really care about them getting back together in any context.
Then there's just the weird stuff about the show. Like what's wrong with this girl's face:
Everyone else has a normal face. Is there some hidden meaning to this? Why do I remember her more than the other girls? Is she going to be some mahjong raid boss ten episodes in?
And the lady who scouts for pro mahjong teams looks like this:
Are monocles just mahjong attire? What is going on with the visual cohesion in this show? Or does she also shop at Bodyline?
Also, there were a lot of leg shots. Like...a lot. It was probably easier to tell which girl was which by their legs than their faces because the camera spent most of its time down there. I might think it could be passed off as mistake or some kind of artistic decision, but the after credits lingerie lounging kind of incriminates the entire show.

I'm not the one who reported that one. I also didn't report my own post, there's obviously more than one reporter here.
No, we need an individual to pin all of the blame on.
Don't forget the shitty ending in which most of the cast got a couple of throwaway lines and no resolution or even a story arc. The show was obviously meant to run a lot longer and it got cut in half.
Well of course, but pointing fingers is much more fun, don't you agree?
See, this is the kind of response I was hoping for.
Which is scary in and of itself cause the show felt way too long as it is.

I liked it more when we were coercing people into watching Utena last year. Maybe we can point people to Macross Plus considering the Watanabe hype this season?

The design for the Pied Piper ship is infinitely inferior to the Gekko-State ship.

Apparently getting people to watch terrible anime is the "in thing" this season (and last season, and the season before that...) mainly because it's much easier to do.
If you tell someone that a show is terrible, when they go and watch it because it's terrible they'll have no complaints!
If you tell someone a show is good, but they don't actually like it, then they'll be disappointed.
The only reason to be disappointed with a recommendation for a 'bad anime' is when it isn't bad enough.
Plus, Macross Plus is a mecha anime and no-one likes those anymore. People probably don't even know what a Vf-1 valkyrie is.
