The 3DS XL isn't due out in North America for over six weeks, but with the Japanese and European release dates less than a month away, several outlets have been able to get their hands on the large-sized 3DS. Early reports have suggested that the system's 3D effect has been improved, as well as the sweet spot for viewing the effect. With that in mind, questions started being raised about whether Nintendo has made any deliberate alterations to the system, or whether some of this is purely a side effect of making the system bigger.

We asked Nintendo.

First and foremost, the 3D effect and the 3DS XL's screens. Aside from physical size, Nintendo has made no changes to the 3DS XL's displays - they are made of the same materials as the original 3DS. Nintendo attributes the perception of better 3D to the actual dimensions of the screen, noting that the larger format can lend to a better impression of depth with some games.

Furthermore, Nintendo hasn't adjusted the 3DS XL to accommodate the 90% display increase. Early impressions of the XL have noted that 3DS games fare well in the expanded format, even going so far as to wonder if there are filters or aliasing effects being applied to assist. Nintendo denies this is the case, telling IGN that the XL features no such implementation.

A variety of cosmetic changes have accompanied the XL design, including what appears to be slight adjustments to the speaker design, which features a slightly different array of holes. Nintendo confirmed to us that those changes are simply cosmetic - "the speaker function of the XL is the same quality level as the 3DS's," a spokeperson told us.

Lastly, one interesting adjustment has been made to the XL. While the system's single circle pad remains the same as its original 3DS counterpart, Nintendo has adjusted all of the other inputs, including the D-Pad, shoulder and face buttons. They are all, according to the publisher, "slightly bigger than the 3DS buttons."

Ugh, I really want this, the big screen looks so nice. But I already have a SE Zelda 3DS, that I definitely won't sell. What will I do with two 3DSs?
I also want the white one but apparently it's only for Japan. Damn you Nintendo.
Play single cart multiplayer DS/3DS games with anyone!

I'm not playing any 3DS games either until I get this.

Haha, same here.

I guess I want it to feel like a "truly new experience" (for lack of a better way for me to put it). I'm going to get it with Kid Icarus and New Super Mario Bros. 2. It's going to be a great day.

Going to give my old 3DS to my brother.

I'm not playing any 3DS games either until I get this. I tried but all I thought about was the screen being the size of the vita's and I can wait. Wish it came out next week though lol

I'm going to continue to play some. Just so that when the XL arrives I have a nice "HOLY F***" moment. Whereas when the 3DS launched I had more of a "Eww this is lame" moment after having used a DSi XL for a year.

So I don't like the lack of portability, the rounder edges, the price, the colors and the black-only atround the touch screen.
But I like the sizes of the screens.

What to do.

Oh well. I had hoped for better sound, its not great currently - too tinish.

Thanks for the answer. Ok so I need to transfer everything first and then trade it. Will I retain my ambassador status? (Doesn't seem to mean much now the free VC games deal is over).

Yes, everything transfers, including Ambassador Status.

What I want to know if purchases made on the newer 3DS(XL) will be lost or "merged" with the newly transferred data.
Should've posted that GameBoy accessory.

So what does this mean? The resolution is the same or maybe slightly worse?

It's the same resolution, with no filters.

Read the OP, people thought Nintendo used some kind of filter because the image didn't look pixelated.

The thing about my 3DS is that the audio is so muted and low on 3DS games, but on DS games it's so bright and loud.

Try setting the audio setting to Stereo instead of Surround.

If you intend to use headphones/a separate speaker then Surround is the way to go. If you intend to use the 3DS speakers then Stereo will give you an accoustic boost.

I dont know who at Nintendo they asked about the Screen but from various first hands on, and from the OP i got this

- the screen looks good, very good
- while the image looked worse on a DSiXL than on a DSi, it's not the case here. 3DSXL pixels look as defined as on 3DS.
- the screen seems very luminous
- 3D effect is more comfortable and more immediate.

Just from the bigger size we get all this changes???. And besides the "screens materials" arent even the same from launch 3DS to the newest 3DS.
I think this is just speculation from IGN and they didnt ask Nintendo anything about the 3DS LL.

Im going to wait to the Iwata Ask about the 3DS LL, those Q&A allways gives you the best info.

Will the DSi XL screen protectors fit this? I'm pretty sure they will have ones for the 3DS XL at launch, but this time I want to at least put one on the bottom screen before use.

eShop purchases are merged between both systems.
Wait, what do you mean?

Does this mean if I own both a 3DS and 3DS XL, I'll be able to have my eshop and ambassador games on BOTH systems?

How much do I and the rest of the early adoptards get in exchange for funding its development?

However many number of hours you've spent playing the great games released thus far is what you get.

People that buy early and get upset at a revision being announced are certainly something.

I bought it knowing well that a revision was coming, and that I would buy the revision. It was just a dumb way of asking how much trade in value will be.

No, it means that if you're transferring data from your 3DS to your 3DS XL, but you've already used your 3DS XL and bought games from the eShop on it before making the transfer, then all your purchases will be combined on the target 3DS after the transfer.

So, for example, say you already downloaded a bunch of stuff on your original 3DS, including Ambassador games and all that, but when you get your 3DS XL you download New Super Mario Bros. 2 with it. If you transfer your data from your original 3DS to your 3DS XL, then all those purchases will be merged with your eShop account on the 3DS XL, so you'll still have New Super Mario Bros. 2 from your XL as well. Any eShop balance is also merged.

It's all right here on Nintendo's website:

For those bitching about a revision:

513 days will have passed between the original 3DS release, and the release of the XL. If you take the average of the time between releases of revisions since the original DS, the average is 566.

We were due a revision sooner or later. I'm surprised people weren't expecting it.

It really has become standard for handheld platforms to have semi-regular revisions. There were five different versions of the PSP and four different versions of the DS. The ipad and ipod touch usually receive annual revisions as well.

I should know this...

Most electronics get a yearly revision these days. I'm surprised console life cycles still last 6-7 years. That's a long time technologically. Most people were running Pentium IV's and 1GB of RAM back then, just for comparison.

To be fair though, all but one of the psp revisions were more or less logical small upgrades that probably ended up making the system cheaper to produce, where as with the DS Nintendo made such significant changes that anyone with a previous version might feel screwed. The ds lite was much smaller and had better screen lighting by far if i recall, the DSI added more internal and the Eshop if I recall, and then you got 2x screen sizes with the XL. This is a much dirtier practice than 'the screen looks 5 percent sharper, its a bit lighter, and maybe a slight boost in battery life' that the psp was getting.
