I could try this "little" thing yesterday. Really nice, specially its feeling-sense of touch.

We recorded this 3DS vs XL video comparison + hands-on impressions:

Oh, and weight felt almost the same to me!

If you're involved with that site, please fix it. It doesn't load at all in Firefox, and when it does, it's a horrendous jumbled mess.

Had to load up IE, and that's not good. Anyway, sorry about the moaning - the video is awesome :D :D Thanks!

The site loads fine in Firefox and Chrome for me. Check your ad-blocking software.

Has Nintendo said anything about non gimped colors for US?

USA - Gimped colours for god knows how long
Europe - Awesome Silver, but fucking gimped price and no AC adapter
JP - BEST COLOUR! (white)...but no AC adapter.

So in other words, no. Sorry.

I would be a day 1 buy (USA) if either black or silver was available. But since it's only red and blue (I believe), I won't be buying. I can't believe I can't give Nintendo my money because they brought only the ugliest colors to the USA and region locked it so I can't import.

It's probably going to be, what, 3-6 months before they start bringing over the other regions colors?

I don't know what has gone into me, but I need this system day 1.

I, I...I'm starting to feel this way too and I haven't touched my 3DS in months. I just had this thought of playing etrian odyssey 3 on the bigger screen and how much better it would be for making and reading the map.

Useless for me to fight it, I'll buy one.

Why not just get a DSi XL for DS games?

Yep. I still don't understand why they do that. If they wanted two tones, they should have gone with darker shade on the inside, lighter on outside. Silver is really the only one that looks good with the black.

I'm glad they're doing that, though. If they weren't black on the inside, I'd be much more likely to wait for another color. As it is, since the inside is black, I don't even really care whether I get red or blue, I'll take whichever is available.

DS games look kinda shitty on a 3DS, though, even 1:1. Something off about them.

Talk about overreaction - especially since they seem to look quite good on the 3DS XL. AT this point he should rather just buy the 3DS and have access to both game libraries - 3DS is getting some great titles the next months too.

Anyone know the answer to my question? One of the first games I'm going to play is theatrythm final fantasy... a very touch heavy game, I don't want to damage this screen the first couple uses.

Upscaling to a non-native resolution, same reason Wii games look poor on an HDTV. In my opinion, it's not nearly that kind of a gulf but some people really dislike it. I have no problem putting up with it though, especially in games where the slide pad is a boon, like playing a hojillion hours of DQIX.

In stretched mode they definitely dont look as good. In 1:1 on the current 3DS they look great, but they're too small. On the XL the'll be the same size as a DSi in 1:1 mode. Fine by me. I even liked the look of DS games stretched on the XL.

For what it's worth, to me the blue seems to look much better in videos than in the official Nintendo pics. I thought the blue looked too bright & 'baby blue' when I saw the original pics, but in the videos I've seen since the blue looks much less loud, seems darker, more sleek and understated.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is that I felt the same way as you at first, but after seeing videos I now got no problem getting the blue version.

Can't deny a black or white version would be nice though. But at least it's no longer a deal breaker for me.

Those original Nintendo pictures were really terrible, it was just...flat and dull and looked like some knock-off from eBay. While I'm still unhappy with the colors, they look much, much better in the videos we've seen.

There was no stretching happening on the XL, though, was there? Same resolution and all.

Not sure what the word for it is in non- 1:1 mode, but the image is being made to fit-the-screen. I guess stretching would imply it was being made to fit all of the top screen, which thankfully it isn't.

I always use Hori. We have yet to see any accessories for the 3DS XL, since it has only just been shown, so hopefully 3rd parties can get them out by launch.

Thanks for the info... I'll have to take a look at some videos of the blue model and maybe see it in person and take a closer look. I had a blue DS fat, and I assumed it would be colored something like that (which I did not like).

Is the same. The default is stretched (as far as it can stretch, since the top screen is not stretched to widescreen...like the regular 3DS), if you hold Select or Start while booting up a game it goes to 1:1. Only that in the XL because the screens are bigger, the 1:1 is bigger compared to the 3DS.

Uh. I'm being dense, don't mind me, I somehow interpreted that to mean the DSi XL.

Just found a new preview video. Shows off how the 1:1 mapping looks for old DS games.

youtube

In case anybody wondered what they were saying, here is a small summary:

- Stylus re-located
- SD card slot on the other side now, 4gig included
- inside is matt, finally
- buttons seem to feel better
- circle pad seems to have more grip
- ds games seem to scale better, and look better on the xl (full screen mode)
- complaining about the ac adapter :P
- 3ds games look somehow smoothed
- buy this one.

This is just a side-effect of the larger pixels. Since the dark borders between the LCD pixels don't increase at the same rate as the pixels themselves, the LCD "grid" effect is less noticeable. The "grid" causes an optical illusion similar to a sharpen filter, so the less visible it is the "smoother" the image looks.

wait what? did they announce a new one and i missed it or did you mean the older AW titles?

also: is the outside MATTE or glossy? I really can't tell from the screens, luckily the inside is matte confirmed though!
Looks more like a satin finish on the outside, which is kind of uh, shiny matte but not glossy. Hopefully it holds up well over time.
we need a video of the Red one

It'll probably look the best, it's harder to fuck up red.

That I'll probably get blue cause I never really liked red (of course I have a red 3DS cause I kept hearing the blue was ugly and there was no black in stock).

Keep an eye on eBay for top/bottom shell replacements...although that might take just as long and might be hard to get colors from other regions.

If they did it my way, there would be a silver/black, White, dark/light blue, and dark/light red.

I'm not really sure why more variety would be bad.

I didn't mean I'm glad they're being idiots about the color selection, I just meant I'm glad the inside of the units is black instead of blue or red.

Jesus Christ with all the color whining. It's not like you're buying a car. If the color options are a deal breaker, then you never really wanted one in the first place. If they came in pink and highlighter yellow, I'd STILL be getting one.

You act like those would look bad.

If anything, that combination would only make me want that more.

Edit: Damn you, japot...

No, it means that if you're transferring data from your 3DS to your 3DS XL, but you've already used your 3DS XL and bought games from the eShop on it before making the transfer, then all your purchases will be combined on the target 3DS after the transfer.

So, for example, say you already downloaded a bunch of stuff on your original 3DS, including Ambassador games and all that, but when you get your 3DS XL you download New Super Mario Bros. 2 with it. If you transfer your data from your original 3DS to your 3DS XL, then all those purchases will be merged with your eShop account on the 3DS XL, so you'll still have New Super Mario Bros. 2 from your XL as well. Any eShop balance is also merged.

It's all right here on Nintendo's website:

Aw lame. I was really hoping I could have my digital games on both my 3DS and 3DS XL, like I can with my iPhone and iPad. Nintendo really needs to introduce a universal account system, for Pete's sake. I'm sick of them being five years behind everyone else in the digital world.

So, I didn't really want one, huh? That's pretty arrogant.

Just because you hold that variable to a lower standard does NOT mean that it isn't a valid factor for others. I guess Nintendo should just release one color from now on because you say they don't matter.

I held off so long on getting one ...now Mario Kart, Mario Land, Zelda OoT, Star Fox, Kid Icarus will be mine anyone else have some good recommendations or did I miss any good first party games?

Pilotwings can be found for cheap ($20 and under now), and it's a pretty entertaining and challenging title if you enjoy trying for high scores and perfect games.

Resident Evil: Revelations is flawed, especially the single player, but it's a decent game saved by the more mission based, Raid Mode.

There are loads of good eShop offerings as well. Aside from the 3D Classics (notably Kirby's Adventure) you have original content like Mutant Mudds, Might Switch Force, Pushmo, and multiplatform titles like the Zen Pinball games and VVVVVVV.

You should probably check out: Nintendo 3DS Games: what does this thing have?

the colors are pretty awful for US release. I think the white looks nicest for this version. The blue and red are atrocious.

I kinda feel bad because I actually have some 3ds games ordered.. but i don't own a 3ds lol.

It really doesn't, because at the end of the day, it's still a fucking 3DS XL. You think someone buying the red or blue one at launch, is doing it because they have lower standards? You're willing to not buy the device, and wait for a couple of months, simply because it isn't your favorite color? You're gonna miss out on playing 3DS/DS games on that big ass screen? Over a COLOR? Isn't the XL black when you open it?

So, no. I don't think really want one.

Yeah. I don't understand the whole color drama thing. Though I'd have to draw the line if it was Pink. :P

I've gotten over it (blue in my future), but what's so hard to understand? NoA is just being their cynical usual selves and exploiting it. Then in two months when things slow down a bit, they unveil the rest of the colors. To intentionally decline colors when they're being manufactured is retarded. Unless it's not. And it's not because NoA thinks they can exploit it for more profit. Many people object to this naked exploitation. At least NoA could have embraced their choices and went with a Red, White, and Blue campaign. USA... Fuck YEAH!

This is really dumb.
These are luxury devices that no one needs. Of course there are people that will wait for a preferred color.

I personally don't get it. It's not a fashion accessory. I buy them to play games, and I choose from the available colors even if I don't particularly love the look. I don't understand letting the color be the deciding factor on buying or not buying. I'm sure I do a lot of things that puzzle other people too, though. Celebrate my own stupidity yay!

It's fine. People can wait to get a color they want, because it's what they will be looking at the whole time they play it.
