3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

For me.. I really feel I dodged a bullet with this. I literally was heading out the day they announced this to pick up a 3ds, but fortunately did not. The reports of the 3d effect being a tad better on the eyes is a major plus for me. Can't wait for August now :(

Anyone have recommendations on 'can't skip' titles beyond the obvious mario and zelda's?

Do yourself a favor and pick up Kid Icarus before any of those.

I meant EO4. The DSi is perfect for me for playing regular DS games, 3DSXL is good going forward for the 3DS. Wish it came with a second analog, but that horse has been beaten many times. Buy it for what it is, useless to keep harping on what it isn't.

It definitely deserves a spot. Best game on 3DS so far imo. There is a large amount of content and replay value and the multiplayer is ace. Just see if you can control it well enough and you'll be fine. My GOTY so far :)

Probably the same for me, although Kid Icarus has by far the most content if you're up for it. Only issue with the game is a steep learning curve for the controls, but once it clicks, it's full speed ahead into THE FUN ZONE.
 
I can't wait to get one. People are whining about the colors, Id love to have more choices but I dont mind, I think Ill get Blue

Game wise, I have alot I wanna dive into, Might start with some Kid Icarus. Never finished OoT so I'll grab that. Kingdom Hearts looks great, MINE!!...

But what really caught my eye is Code of Princess!! (THANK THE GAMING GODS FOR A US RELEASE!!)

I hope it fixes the DS games issue too, I was thinking bout buying a DSi XL but if this could kill 2 birds with one stone, ill be one happy gaming monk. B/W2 will round off my starting game lineup.

Seriously cant wait for release lol

Not sure why so many people think this. I enjoyed the Land Battles even more than the Air Battles (though they're both fantastic). What's so "mediocre" about the Land Battles?

i just didn't enjoy them. they go on for far too long, ground combat isn't that fun and you're usually running through corridors.

Your hands are permanently disfigured, or at least feel like they're going to be by the time you're done with them. Not that I wasn't glued, but I'd love to have been able to juggle between analog and stylus for aiming on land segments.

Anyway, yeah KI is to me the best 3DS game, by far. The gameplay is great and the story is amazing. I hope I can play fully in 3d with XL, i had to switch off at the crazy parts.

I wouldn't say that. The story is pretty mediocre, but the writing is phenomenal. But yes, it is probably what I would consider the best 3DS game so far, too. It really feels like a handcrafted experience, and not just a console game that is running on a handheld.

The controls.

I love the game. Action packed, great graphics, awesome dialogue, and just oozes personality. Great title. But, the ground sections' controls were absolutely abysmal. Some of the worst controls I've ever experienced in a "AAA" handheld release. Also, corridors, corridors, corridors... and the action just wasn't as good as when in the sky.
 
Is it possible that the XL might fix some of these "control" issues that plague the game? I have yet to play it but as the comments above say, I know its famous for wrist pain and overall awkwardness.
 
I never found anything really decent about the dialogue. It's the same cringe inducing fourth wall fare as a lot of other badly written games. Basically the rubber scissors variety of an NIS game.

The only time that specific Nintendo Clubhouse localization humor ever actually seemed to stick for me was in Earthbound, because the rest of the game had the writing and tempo to back it up so it didn't just come across as try too hard. Its usually polished and inoffensive enough but the amped original writing + the localization Kid Icarus really grated at me.

I actually liked the dungeons more than the air though, but I dislike rail shooters. The controls do blow but after you pain yourself into getting used to them to an extent it works well enough to be functional. Good game overall, love the difficulty functions, just wish it was on Wii or even twin sticks. Kinda wish it was retooled as a big Wii-U game with a lot of options and functions like a lot of their big Wii games (Brawl, Mario Kart, etc)

To a degree, part of the problem is needing to hold the 3DS in the 3D sweet spot, and if the increased screen size means a larger sweet spot then you don't have to worry about that as much while playing.

Hard to say, but from the looks of it, I would say no, not entirely. The main reason that KI is awkward to control and uncomfortable is, IMO, because of how thin the 3DS is. Using the 360 controller to make a positional comparison, the 3DS's shoulder buttons are even further forward than the RB and LB bumper buttons with respect to the analog stick. Combine this with the slide pad being lower than would be ideal for many people, and it can become very, very uncomfortable.

The slide pad looks like it's in a more comfortable position on the XL, but I can't really say with much confidence anything regarding the position of the shoulder buttons and the thickness of the XL.

That's a good question. Much of the problem comes from having to carry the system entirely with one hand, while the other manipulates the stylus. This wouldn't be quite so bad on its own, since one could prop the system up on a knee, but the 3D sweet-spot reduces your options.
 
I don't know if the XL would fix the control problems, but it could certainly make the game more comfortable to play for extended periods of time. I hate how the corner of the current 3DS digs into my palm.
 
I really don't understand the control complaints with Kid Icarus: Uprising, mainly because I didn't have any problems with the controls myself. And I know there are many other people who will tell you the same thing, but at the same time there are many people who claim the the controls are horrible. It's strange how the opinions are so divided like that. You either love the controls or you hate them, it seems.

I like to compare it with Kirby Air Ride. That game had very different and simple controls (much like Uprising) for a racing game, and it turned a lot of people off. But everyone I know who has played the game has fallen in love with it. It's still one of my all time favorite games.


Anyway, I think that it's a game that every 3DS owner should experience. Even if you might find a few issues with the game, there's just so much that the game has to offer.
 
How's Starfox 3D? My library now consists of MK7, SML, Zelda (holding off for the XL to play it), and Zen/Marvel Pinball. Kinda hoping there will be another b2g1f prior to the XL coming out so I can nab Icarus, RE and a third game. Thinking that 3rd game might be Starfox.

I didn't have any problems with them outside of the first day of playing. It was all butter after the first chapter for me.

It's the same old Starfox 64 you know and love (probably, assuming you loved Starfox 64). The graphical upgrades are nice.
 
I actually crawled from under my rock and played a 3DS for the first time saturday. Haha had a good time and surprised how good it looked so i'll be buying this XL version at launch. Gave my DS and games to my parents after I got a iPhone 3GS at launch and pretty much quit playing other handhelds. I've got a nice backlog ahead of me now. :)

I don't think it's the controls themselves so much as it is that the 3DS becomes uncomfortable to hold or use for some people when they're trying to play KI. The ergonomics (or lack thereof) of the damn thing are the deal breaker.
 
Kid Icarus is way overhyped.

IMO the "necessary" 3DS games are Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and Zelda. If you're bored/not interested with those 3 then you can start looking at something else.

Revelations is a must-have.

Erm why would be MK7 or Zelda must-haves if you dont like genres or these kind of titles ? RE story is a mess anyways, so its not like you have had played every title before.

Revelations is a game that should be on another platform. FaceDa's post is good in mentioning stand out titles that shine on the 3DS (a unique game tailored to the hardware, a portable experience that benefits from the wireless connections, and an improved remake (wich makes sense as opposed to RE cause this game was already in another platform before)) and what kind of games you could expect from it.

Eh. Revelations was designed as a handheld title, and it is clearly noticeable in the way it plays.

Really....really ? Couldn't be further from the truth.
 
Kid Icarus has some of the worst controls and not even in a justifiable, eccentric sense like Monster Hunter. But despite that, the game really is quite good, IMO. It, along with the two Mario games and Pushmo from the EShop are my current titles I've put good time into. The B-tier and niche titles on the machine currently don't do much for me, which is why I really look forward for the big pass of things like Code of Princess, Etrian Odyssey IV, 999-2, etc.

I do really want to get Ghost Recon sometime though, I've been meaning to but I originally put it off when Ubi said they were going to bring it to iPad and I figured that'd be better but it vanished off the radar. :lol Obnoxious. Maybe if I can mow down all of the PC games I've bought lately with all the sales I'll get it before the Fall wave.

It's like Zelda, it's the exact same game with polished up visuals. I have fond memories of it, but playing it again I got bored pretty quickly, myself.

Bad controls are a much bigger problem than you're making it seem though. The only problem most people have with iPhone/iPad as a gaming device is that the controls for most games can be horrible. I have Megaman 2 on my iPhone and it's the same great game but the frustrating controls make it unplayable.

You're right though, the 3DS doesn't have too much in the way of Niche games right now, in fact if you don't like Nintendo games I'd advise against buying one (The DS had plenty of great non-Nintendo stuff later on)

Well, I just mean I can get past the controls, personally. They ARE bad, to me, but I like the game enough to put up with it. It's not something I'd consider broken but unpolished and uncomfortable and, IMO, the design should have been altered with the platform in mind.

For iOS, the platform has a lot of really good adventure, sim, RPG, board games, strategy stuff, etc. Stuff like that but id NEVER be able to play anything actiony or with virtual controls. Hate that and won't put up with it at all.

As for third party stuff, one good thing is that the Nintendo games we seem to be getting on the 3DS are leaps and bounds more inspired than the ones on the DS. I liked the DS quite a bit but EVERYTHING I liked on it was third party whereas it's a more healthy mix now. If the games in general hit a good pace and come out at the same rate, it'll be a better platform, IMO.

doesn't help that zelda is like ~20 hrs long, while Star fox could be finished in like 1 sitting.

I'll throw my two cents in here as a first time RE player without the burden of comparison to other consoles.
It took me about 10 minutes to adjust to the game's controls after which I found the game to be a, wait for it, revelation. Although it could exist independently of the 3DS hardware, it fits in quite naturally with the system. At the time of writing it is my second favorite game on the system beaten only by KI:U and followed closely by Mario Kart 7.

Besides, any game could theoretically be on the Vita (barring games which require precision stylus controls like KI:U), even Super Mario 3D Land could be played on a Vita.

I strongly disagree. Revelations, probably more than any other 3DS game is tailor made for handheld gaming. It's not just one of the most content rich games on the 3DS with great controls, amazing set pieces and the best graphics on the system, it's also one of the strongest Resident Evil titles in recent history. Second only to RE4 in my opinion.

To me it's THE must have game on the 3DS. MK7, SM3DL, and RE:R are my absolute highlights on the 3DS.

Game controls better with a second thumbstick and is the kind of game that would benefit from better graphics (considering the approach). It doesn't really take advantage of a second screen or touch controls..

all im saying is that it's not a particulary good example of the 3DS uniqueness, wich is what I interpreted out of FaceDa's post. I have nothing against the game nor its quality.


Ive had a really similar lengthy discussion in this same thread a bit back and I dont really wanna do it again, so nevermind me
