3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

My god the silver is so pretty. I'm officially HYPED. Not a single doubt in my mind, I'm going XL over regular.

It definitely needs a prancing horse.

Both the red and the blue:

Nintendo should totally strike a deal with Ferrari and have a (good!) Ferrari racing game on the 3DS to go with it, or better still Outrun 3D.

Eurogamer just posted their impressions:

It's so big and beautiful. Who said size didn't matter?

Have they given any explanation as to the reasons for the colors of the device? Not a dealbreaker in any way, but it's kinda strange that there isn't a black version and it was the same with the DS XL(at least in Europe).

After seeing all of these hands-on photos, the color choices are pretty much this:

Red - Hideous
Blue - Alright I suppose
Silver - OH FUCK TAKE MY MONEY

Red is calling to me. I don't usually want something bright and noticeable but this just looks great and the silver looks sweet but...its very officey.

I'll see I suppose, but red is looking nice.

Still going to wait for more pictures/videos, but as of right now I'm leaning towards blue.

The recent pics of the blue 3DS XL were very different from the original pics. The recent pics of the red 3DS XL are different from the original pics but not by that much. The shade is pretty much the same.

The shade of blue looks more "tech device-y" than the red in my opinion. Want to see some videos of the red one though.

It's very funny how much I've been changing my opinion on these colors lol...

Has anything been done to the XL to make sure the top screen isn't scratched? Not from anything Nintendo's said (I doubt they'll even admit to this happening) but from pictures and hands on experience. Has anyone noticed anything?

Yep. There are little knobs at the top of the upper screen to prevent the screen from getting scratched.

yep think I posted this awhile ago in the other thread, but I'll post it again in this thread

with those rubber stoppers resting directly on the raised bezel, it'd be almost impossible for that bezel to come in contact with the top screen.

The 3DS did have those rubber feet, though. That was such a bad oversight by a company like Nintendo.

Except the rubber stoppers were at the edge of the system though, so the raised bezel in the center could still come in contact with the top screen.

I'm not exactly sure what this means. Isn't 1:1 the "postage stamp" setting on the original 3DS?

on the XL in 1:1 mode that "postage stamp" will be roughly the size of the normal DSi screen.

Excellent. Thanks. I currently have two rubber feet on my 3DS now in order to stop the touching but it was to late. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that with with the XL. Glad I won't.

The combination red/blue top with black bottom looks awful..why didn't they just make it completely blue or red?
Probably a cheaper way of doing multiple colors, just one base model color for the whole world (...and an extra one for Japan) with simple colored panels to differentiate them.
It just dawned on me to try it with mic test in the settings menu. My iPhone earphones with volume and mic did not work. But then I tried my skull candy ink'd earbuds that have a mic (No volume buttons) and they did work.

Guess I have a wired mic for when playing Heroes of Ruin. :)
The iPhone headphones w/volume control use a different setup on the jack (that I'm not sure works other than for iOS devices and Macs) while the old ones w/just mic and clicker use a pretty standard setup that most cell phone headphones have these days.

Power saving mode makes everything look washed out though. it shouldn't be on regardless, unless well, you really need to save power lol

Helpful tip for 3DS owners: turn off power saving mode in the brightness settings when you're playing DS and DSiWare games. It removes the nasty washed out look.

Super Pro Tip:
do as you have said turn that baby to the highest brightness level and now connect it to the AC adapter
if you have one
to unlock the secret super-bright mode.

Maybe it's just my 3DS but even with the mode off, DS games look a bit washed out compared to my lite.

I wonder what the games would look like with the mode on ._.

Super bright is the best. Sucks that it's limited only to charging though :(

Really hoping that the matte finish doesn't end up accumlating that wear/oil looking spots around the d-pad and buttons over time

You guys know what I'm talking about?

One of the reasons that yeah, while impratical sometimes, I prefer a reflective/gloss finish

Whoa. News to me. I'm gonna go try that right now!

I notice it on my Cobalt DSlite, but nothing too bad. I'd take matte over gloss any day, it's just better and doesn't get slippy when the palms get sweaty :p

Well, it sucks the batterie dry like nothing. But yeah, would be cool to use it
if i wanted to and not just at home.
Well I play almost exclusively at home so it wouldnt be an issue for me :l

thanks. I did that on the first day, but the colors are still washed out and "off" compared to the bright crisp colors of dsixl or dslite. It's like the screens are too bright for the color palettes of the ds software... that's not quite it though, but it looks like that.

Copy what Apple did for their trackpads to prevent the wear spots...glass!
