EVO 2012 Thread 2 Because one thread wasnt enough to hold all the hype and the salt

That's the price for on person lol
There could be some cheaper options, I only did a quick search for now, but not much cheaper, probably around $1700 or so.
Yeah, it's hard living in Croatia :(

Ah wow your coming from an international flight.

I see why it's pretty expensive. Domestic flights from where I live (Houston, TX) to Las Vegas , NV only costs me 470$ at most for a two connecting flight.

Also just a suggestion for people coming to EVO next year,

Food and water is very very VERY expensive (Especially water) in Las Vegas (It's a tourist area, what do you expect and your in a desert). What I would advice for you guys to do is if applicable and ( fit on your big suitcase without exceeding the weight limit on your airport) is to bring a mini cooler.

Purpose of this is to simple cut the cost of needing to buy 4-7$ per water bottle and just buy a whole 24-pack Walmart (great value brand) water for 5$ and keep refilling it via water fountain. Helped me save at least $50+ for that 3 day stay.

At the same time, do not check in at Ceasar Palace lol. Seriously, it's not worth it. I recommend going a bit further from the downtown area and get a reservation from the Golden Nugget Hotel. It's a 4 star hotel , and from experience the commodities and service is top notch. For 3 days , I spent only $355. Compared to Ceasar Palace or Wynn which you'll be looking at 500$ + per night.

(Being serious about the hotel GAF, you wanna be practical while your stay in Vegas, it gets pretty expensive)

For food, I suggest (and I mean if you wanna go dirt cheap) :

Go to Walmart , buy those Maruchan Cup Noodles for $0.17 each and microwave it at your hotel. It may taste like shit compared to other noodles I've tasted ( I'm Asian, I know my Pho) but its on budget and get my energy up.

If your competing on the tourney, you need to bring your console and fightstick.

Bring the console to practice in your hotel. It helps a lot for warm ups and gets you going on that muscle memory. Think of it as prepping for pools.

Another essential you definitely need to bring is:

- A high quality camera
- Bring loads of cash if your going to the casinos
- A laptop / iPad
- A decent alarm clock
-Multiple iPhone / whatever your phone is chargers
-A silver sharpie
-Your favorite fighting game poster

Make sure you guys get a good night sleep. Try and be early when EVO opens and CONFIRM what pools you are on. You wait on the wrong line = DQ.

Make sure your smart phone is always charged. I suggest bringing multiple chargers ( one for the hotel, one for use in Ceasar Palace). Trust me, you'll burn out your phone
due to excessive use of the maps app or checking updated info of the schedule via EVO webpage.

Bring your poker face and have your silver sharpie and poster ready for autographs. I have FChamps, Fuudo, Daigo, and Spooky's autograph from EVO 2011 and a lot more on my SFIV Poster. Hanging on my media room with a glass frame. (god so much hype!!!)

Rent a vehicle if your flying there. It's essential to have your own transportation if you like to lurk Las Vegas. There's a lot of things to see in this place. (Dancing waters, The different hotels, casinos, etc)

**If you plan on doing that, Three days is NOT enough. ( 3 days for EVO , 4 days for Vegas lurking)**

Now on a side note for the different big hotels
In Vegas , each hotel has a 'theme'. Each theme depends on what hotel your at ; for example Ceasar palace has a 'Roman museum' within the hotel itself. Wynn has colorful, dinosaur-ish theme that includes props for viewing. It's definitely worth visiting the different hotels for pics. (Kids would love to get involve in this type of activity as there's really not much kids can do in Vegas)

Lastly, expect to bring about a $1000.00 pocket money for different things you'll see on EVO. Exclusive EVO fightsticks, Shirts, Lanyards, Womens (uh oh call Kotaku!!) and other peripherals that might pique your interests. (This is the reason why it's advisable you conserve money for food/water and hotel)

You guys should just stay at the Imperial Palace next year. It's super cheap (like 50 a night). Just go to that Walgreens down the strip and buy water and random food/snacks for your room and you are good to go.

That's if it's at the Caesars again.

I think Marvel's biggest problem are "happy birthdays". Now that is some randomness. Assists get fucked up enough at it is when players think about it, but "derp I guess now my combo is killing two characters" moments are silly. (If in hit stun assists should drop out of hypers or DHCs or x-factor activation. Maybe have the main character drop it in some situations and assist drop in others, making the player decide if he can't do it with a plain combo.)

(EDIT: That's assuming we've come accept x-factor and Doom missiles hasn't been picked for that match, lol)
Happy birthdays aren't a problem at all. People get hit because they are careless with their assists. There are very clear times when it's safe to call assists, and people just push the button because they're too used to it. Anyone who has played this game extensively understands certain rules about this.

Heck, look at ChrisG. How often does that guy get happy birthday'd? Almost never, yet he has what might be the most unsafe assist in the game. ChrisG knows how to protect his assist and get it out there. Justin Wong gets happy birthday'd all the time because he treats the Tatsu assist like it's invincible.

My opponent pressed the assist button at a shitty time. How is that random?

My opponent pressed the button...
Indeed.

I talked with Osamu a bit in Japanese several times across the weekend and he was really happy to be at Evo. I never asked but I get the feeling it wasn't just the event but being in a place where he was just one of the guys was an aspect to it. It's one of those great things that the FGC has when it really counts.

I was surprised when I saw him there, must be something else to not having access to your local arcade to visiting the biggest fg tournament in the world. He was alone when I saw him, not sure if he traveled that way or not(I mean friends, not necessarily who may have sponsored his trip).

Thanks for watching. Took note on some of the suggestions you guys made to improve the broadcast and we'll try to implement those sooner than later.

Dunno why, but I'm happy FChamp regards Justin so highly. When he was giving a rundown of players he respected during the "pelican" rant, I remember Justin's name being absent.

Well Champ did play Marvel 2, kind of noticed that he has really high respect for the Marvel 2 vets. Not only Justin, but guys who aren't even big names. Guys like Mine, Crizzle and etc...

I thought Marvel was Wong's focus for EVO? Or did he decide to start training more for the SF games early for the 25th tournament series?

I think it was after Shadowloo Showdown that Justin pretty much went all in on AE. Oddly enough it was after Shadowloo Showdown that Champ went all in on Marvel.

I remember Champ talking on FGTV about how much tech he learned in AUS for AE and that Sim pretty much had no chance so that's why he was done with AE. At the same time I guess all that tech probably made Justin want to dive back into AE.

I think Pond3r said that they're at the Rio next year?

ChrisG then went on to win that set. It was against Scrubeks, that was a really great match, very close right to the end.

IMO ChrisG really had lost in that particular moment with Morrigan against like a stacked team... but it's Marvel baybee it ain't over till it's over.

So disappointed in Scrubeks... That's my boy, but he definitely should've had game 4.

I had the pleasure of doing a 10 minute interview with Osamu on Saturday for SRK. CrossCounter Recorded it and sent it to SRK so hopefully it'll be up sometime soon. I played BlackJack with him Sunday night and I could tell that this was one of the happiest moments in his life. It's a real tear jerker seeing someone live out his dream and be all smiles all weekend.
Awesome. Can't wait to see it! I'd also like to see everyone's pictures they got with him. Maybe make it into a collage or something.

It looks like they're alternating. I'd prefer Caesar's. I hate being off the strip and Rio's dealers are all old and mean. There aren't a lot of chicks at Rio either. Unless you're into 90 year olds...

At least there'll be some sort of knew "enemy" next year. It used to be Japan everyone wanted to beat, but next year it's probably Korea.

Is it just me or is Zhi annoying as all fuck?

It's not just you. He reminds me of a 13 year old boy who has discovered the opposite sex for the first time, and his humour would probably fit in well with this age group.

He is good when commentating matches with someone else.

I cleaned up in blackjack at the Gold Coast last year, so I'm okay with those dealers. :P

want to know how to do EVO cheap? I've only been 3 times so others might have better advice than me but:

Stay slightly off the strip. Along paradise similar areas are cheaper hotels. We spent 300 for 4 nights after taxes for hotel arrangements. They provided a free shuttle to the venue from our hotel and the walk back late at night was only 25 minutes.

Next is food. If you're staying off the strip, there are tons of great and cheap places. I got an awesome XL pizza for about 18 bucks, fridged it over night and that was all I brought to eat during EVO finals between myself and my girlfriend, we still couldn't finish it over the 14 hrs we were there.

Get something to drink in a big container, there's a free water cooler in the venue. Load it up and be cool with just drinking water all day, you'll be fine.

Side bet on the sure thing. I made some of my money back by betting on things like Xiao Hai over poongko and Infiltration over Daigo. This tip is only if you're very knowledgeable about the players though. It's for that reason I never bet on Marvel.

All in, between my girlfriend and I, we spent maybe 450 split two ways plus the actual EVO fees (badges really). Not bad for a weekend in vegas and the biggest event of the year for fighting games.

which hotel did you stay at?

If I could actually level up my game to the point where I can play consistently I would consider going to EVO. I'm looking at 2 years out for that though with such a busy internship/school schedule this year.

Thankfully the stream is so good now that I don't feel like I'm getting shafted not being able to go and watching from home. It's like a PPV event.

I never understood why it wasn't. Sure SF4 is more "traditional" and gets the most entries. But it's no where near as hype as Marvel or even KoF

More inernational competition and more entries. IF Marvel gets the most entries next year, maybe there will be a change.

I stayed at Caesars for EVO. It was more expensive than the RIO last year. Definitely splitting a room will cut costs. I think my entire floor was attendees and there must have been 4-5 guys in the room next to mine. 5 nights at the EVO rate was $712.32. I think nearly all the GAF people I met stayed at a nearby casino or off Strip like Vulva did. This was my second EVO so I was a bit smarter with my money than last year. Rented a car instead of cabbing it everywhere. Eating off Strip and not at the Casino. All I spent at Caesars was $4 for a fruit cup on finals day because I was really lacking fruits and veggies on my trip. EVO is a great event and I'm going to attend if I'm able every year.

You don't understand why the game with the most entrants is the main event?

Well just because the most people want to play it doesn't mean the most people want to watch it. And if your viewers peak during the event before your "main event", you might want to reconsider what the real main event is.

Obviously hype is all that matters.

Obviously.

I know this is a sarcastic comment, but I honestly think hype should be a major factor if you want to keep consistent viewership throughout the event.

Edit:

the louder and longer ppl scream is an indication of how hype a game is. And hype has a direct correlation to quality. You ain't know?

You say this like AE doesn't get views, it had the most last year. If MK9 were the last game of of EVO2012, viewership would have dropped off even harder than it did.

KOF was hype because someone beat Bala, I'm pretty sure nobody would have cared about KOF is Bala won it free (there was zero hype during the CafeID players matches). So thanks to MadKOF.

Just because this year AE finals weren't as hype as last year it doesn't mean it isn't as hype as the other games. Just look at Shadowloo Showdon, incredible Top 8 all around. They'll bring back the hype next year, but they need to work on the schedule, can't run your main event 4 hours late. I remember Skisonic asking to tweet SFIV finals, but who do I tweet it to when everybody probably went to sleep?
