Hail to the KING baby
Whoo, just completed my 100th game of Summoner Wars!

IRL I haven't played my absolute favorite board games more than a few dozen times probably. iOS gaming is hilarious. I've now played Summoner Wars 100 times, Carcassonne probably 1000, Ascension 600....

Guys, I've been playing a fair bit of Dead Space lately as I've been on a shooter kick. I bought it for a buck ages ago but put it down since shooter controls just irk me on touch screens.

Well, its actually pretty neat now that I give it a square chance but the whole reason I'm posting is that I found a 3d shooter that just went free that I think controls probably best of any I've played on ios.

"Call of Mini: Zombies" isn't exactly Citizen Kane but it's a fun little shooter with neat levels, decent controls, and fun personality. I really recommend it, even if it isn't free (which it currently is, hint hint).

Hate the controls in CoM: Zombies. Well, I should say, I hate the fact you can't adjust the controls. The turn speed is lumbering, and there's no way to adjust it. Erased it after a couple of co-op sessions.

Done with Chaos Rings, including all the extra bosses. Apparently you get a new title screen if you beat
Piu-Piu
with all couples but I'm not going there (getting Ayuta and Mana to level 100 was enough, lol). Fun times with the Gene system, always having the ones with boost skills equipped paid off for the level up bonuses.

Bought Omega some time ago when it had a price drop, nice that the following 2 games in the series have GC support. Feels good to be finally completing all these long games like this and IB (I know, IB is only as long as you make it), think I'll get to playing FF Tactics properly next.

Yeah, we're doing it opposite, because I'm currently hooked on FFT -- somehow managed to log in over 30 hours in just a few days -- but I'm wanting more Square Enix. I was thinking CR2, though. Is it a series where chronology matters?

It's hard to get any information on this since, Pocket Planes bug aside, we seem to be the only ones posting about GC achievement problems in the thread. Google searching doesn't give me too many results about this kind of thing either.

I had issues with four games so far. Every other one I play/played works perfectly and achievements register immediately (assuming I'm online through a decent connection, otherwise the GC log-in may lag a bit).

Which games gave you trouble? These are the problems I had:

-Beat Sneak Bandit: Some achievements would lag, sometimes for hours, but eventually register. Got the entire list working on this one so it was just a minor annoyance.

-Pocket Planes: Seems to be related to the game code as per developers feedback in the PP thread. Was supposed to be fixed in an update but I think it's still broken. As far as I know it's only the "Transatlantic" achievement that seems to be bugged, but more may be affected. (edit: just checked the PP thread and the Transatlantic achievement seems to be working for some people).

-Brandnew Boy: Logs in GC but doesn't register any achievements at all, despite in-game notifications. I tried deleting and reinstalling the game but no dice. I bought it after it got the big updated that added the female character, so I don't know if they were working before.

-Early Bird: Used to register achievements normally in the past. I stopped playing it for a while, then updated it at some point and got back to it recently. I even forgot it had GameCenter support because it wouldn't even log-in to GC when I started playing it again. Got all the stars and rage-deleted the game from my GC list when I noticed what was happening.

-GameCenter (not a game, but may be somewhat related): A few days ago it stopped showing which game people on my friends list played last, showing instead "Never Played" under their names. Affected other people in the thread, seems to be fixed now.

Since I'm done with the games I listed except Brandnew Boy, I'm keeping an eye on any updates to that one to see if it will be fixed. Earlier today I did a system reset/restore from backup on my iPhone for some reasons and decided to test it again. Turns out the game is still not registering achievements so at least it doesn't seem to be device-related.

Beat Sneak Bandit I did have issues with-
For the "cumulative" achievements it's with Infinity Blade 2 and Hero Academy.
Fieldrunners for iPad doesn't trigger any achievements at all which is so *stupid* and one reason I've yet to buy Fieldrunners 2. I've read there are achievements issues with that too.
Also I had problems with cumulative achievmenets with Scribblenauts and Extinction Squad-both of which pissed me off to the point where I simply deleted the app and removed it from my GameCenter listing...

Sorry about that.
Quitting the game fully, clearing it from the multitask list or whatever it's called, then starting and playing a level should post all your achievements -They are stored even though they've failed to post to GC.

yes I did originally have issues-but luckily I was able to resolve it with this app...

Still can't earn the Final Boss in under a certain time achievement though....

*shakes fist*

Haha yeah, I'm preparing myself to get sucked into FFT too. Regarding Chaos Rings, as far as I know CR1 and Omega are related in that Omega is a prequel to CR1 while CR2 is an entirely new story with new characters, so it's ok to just play that one/start from there.

Hmm, Fieldrunners for iPad sounds like it's bugged like Brandnew Boy in that it doesn't trigger any achievements, hopefully they'll look into that before the iPad version of Fieldrunners 2 gets released. I haven't had problems with cumulative achievements so far, I'll make sure to report here if I do (I hope not!) when I get to IB2.

I'm still proud of that one (took me pretty much an entire afternoon, lol).

Great Big War Game looks interesting but I am incredibly put off by the art style of the game...I can usually get past art styles...but this games like an amateur N64 title.

I'm in the same boat as you-the description sounds like something right up my alley-but it looks so poor.

Does credit on your apple account only work for direct purchases from the iTunes store? I just bought Ghost Trick ($10 only buyable through IAP) and I still have my full credit. Does it take awhile to show up or did I just waste $10?

I've found that it takes a few moments for the credit to refresh on the store - at least on the iPhone/iPad.

I'm a bit scared to ask, but how is the 7dollar Dark Knight Rises gameloft game?

I like it a like. You have to understand what you getting with a gameloft game it's basically a Arkham style rip off but it's fun. If it was $40 on 3ds or PSP no one would bat a eye at it. For $7 bucks even though that's apparently "expensive" for a IOS game it's worth it.

You like it a like? Wat? Does that second like mean "lot" or "little" or something else? :p but k, I'll get it on the eventual sale then :p

ugh gaf grammar police

Not really grammar police, since I was the one originally asking about impressions and "I like it a like" isn't really telling me anything, I was HONESTLY wondering what you meant by it/how much you liked it :D

I'm a bit scared to ask, but how is the 7dollar Dark Knight Rises gameloft game?

it's a very pretty game for the iOS. Once you get past the fact that it could really use a controller, what you're getting is a very streamlined Arkham city. the combat is pretty poor, actually. Mash a single button for canned combat moves, similar to Arkham city, although without nearly the amount of animation variety. Attacks feel weak, and don't feel like they're making much contact.

voices are competent, and sound like pretty good imitations of the movie cast. so ultimately, what the game comes down to is exploring Arkham city. Unlike rocksteady's game, you don't get infinite use of the grappling hook, as it only comes out during context-sensitive situations. you'll spend the majority of your time gliding, which is a functional mechanic. the limited exploration is punctuated by pretty crappy combat.

I wouldn't suggest paying seven bucks for it, but the game illustrates that a streamlined Arkham city made by substandard company is really a poor imitation. however, it also illustrates that if rocksteady felt like doing a Batman Arkham city game for the iPad, they could really pull it off.

the game is definitely a looker, and easily one of the best looking games on the iOS platform. however, visually and for all intents and purposes, functionally, It's Arkham city. And if it's that close, but so poor, you might as well just play Arkham city.

$7 bucks dude. The combat I think is fun naturallly no buttons so its not as varied but there is some depth to it. With multiple enemies and having to deal with the armed guards as well. One thing I will knock against the game is the stealth is basically no existant and when u do need to be stealthy it pretty much automated.

There's a good review of it here, though I have to say it reads better than a 5/10: http://www.metro.co.uk/tech/games/905939-the-dark-knight-rises-game-review-arkham-pity

In Short: Gameloft’s cloners have excelled themselves in replicating all the basics of Batman: Arkham City on a smartphone - albeit only at shallow, surface level.

Pros: Impressive scope for a smartphone game, with a large open world, a workable combat system and even pilotable vehicles. Generally good presentation.

Cons: As unavoidable as it may be the controls lack any true precision and the camera is awful. Mostly linear story progression and shallow combat and puzzles.

Is Angry Birds Space HD worth the $2.99? I bought the regular and seasons editions for iPhone, and got the HD Seasons edition from that free promo. I hate the Angry Birds gameplay, but I loved the free trial edition of space.

The trials do a pretty good job of conveying what you get in the full versions (just a lot more of the same), so I think you have everything you need to make your own decision.

I got my copy for free a while back thanks to another GAFfer but honestly didn't put a whole lot of time into it. The complete inability to recreate the same results consistently bugs the hell out of me.

Dead Trigger just wiped my save data all of a sudden, wtf… I wasn't aware it had save related bugs, this sucks.

I'll just play it from the start because I just enjoy it a lot, but now I'm wary of continuing and losing everything again. Glad I didn't buy any IAP though.

PathPix is insanely addictive. it's basically the only thing I've been doing on my phone in the last few weeks

the scary part is that I'm only on level 98 out of 169....and that's just the first game, there are 3 more for a total of 500 more levels

You would probably like it. Most people who hated AB liked Space a lot more. I was the opposite. I really enjoyed AB, but was pretty indifferent to Space.

Looks like TT's Walking Dead comes out this Thursday for iOS.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/07/24/the-walking-dead-the-game-comes-to-ios-this-week

Hopefully it's a good port...though Im not holding my breath...TT's weakest link has always been optimization.

I bought on Steam already, but I'm seriously considering buying it again if the port is good. I just think games like this works so well on iPad, I feel it's a more intimate experience if that makes any sense.

If you don't own The Walking Dead on console/PC buy it here. Game is much better than Telltale's other stuff and has a great story so far.

I may double dip and grab it here for my flight next week.

Firemint (Flight Control, Real Racing) and Iron Monkey (Dead Space, Mass Effect) are now merging, giving birth to Firemonkeys studios.
image004.png

By aligning the strategy of IronMonkey and Firemint, EA is able to create an even more focused team of passionate individuals who are dedicated to developing high-quality mobile game experiences. This merge in the mobile space is resulting in positive overall growth for the Firemonkeys team, as the studio is now hiring for several positions. Fans should expect to see progressive development efforts with upcoming launch and project announcements in 2012.

Firemint is one of the best devs on iOS, i'm surprised they needed to merge. But that can only be good, as long as EA stays out of this.

I know Firemint are Australian, but what about Iron Monkey?

Also, I'm not sure what this'd mean for existing employees of Firemint given they had to cut a number of staff not so long ago. EA

Edit: Wait, they ARE Australian. I had no idea... knew about Firemint (obv) and Halfbrick as the main players here for iOS stuff, but IM being local are news to me.

Edit #2: Wow, amazing list of stuff they've done. Mirror's Edge, Hot Pursuit, Dead Space, Shift, Simpsons Arcade... wow. Firemonkey = iOS megastudio.
