Alright goddamnit I was wrong about the blue.

music to my ears~ #TEAMBLUE4LYFE

disappointing to hear about the speakers, i was hoping they'd improve the stock ones - they're not bad but could better as it is. guess i need a good pair of headphones, any recommendations?

also, Tales doesn't look fantastic up there, but it's serviceable. i mainly wanted to text/stats to be easier on my eyes late at night, looks like ill get just that.

Uh, you know Amazon doesn't personally sell and stock any Nintendo systems right? The only things on there are from 3rd party retailers that sell through them.

Amazon pulled the 3DS and posted a message alerting their consumers that they would no longer carry the 3DS until Nintendo addressed the problem. Nintendo responded by pulling all their hardware from Amazon. Nintendo being Nintendo.

The game does look better, but... oh man - 30 fps and non-HD resolution just don't do justice to this masterpiece.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that the 3DS can't handle the game the way it was intended to look. Would have been nice to have it in 60 FPS, HD, and 3D.

I don't think this was ever confirmed. Amazon never specifically specified screen rubbing as the reason but it was rumored.

Amazon blamed hinges, which is what users were claiming. Users thought the loose hinges is why the screens were being scratched. I doubt Amazon looked into it themselves. They simply saw a huge number of devices being returned to them, read the reviews as to why, and issued a statement and asked Nintendo to address it. Obviously Nintendo didn't like that. There's absolutely no reason for Amazon US to stop making money off of every other piece of Nintendo hardware (Wii, DS Lite, DSi, XL). And now they won't be carrying the 3DS XL. Does anyone honestly believe they've decided simply not to carry it?

Where is my awesome Gameboy Pocket/GBA/GBASP/Micro/DS/DSi/DSiXL build quality Nintendo? I hope the Wii U doesn't have any stupid problems.

I...I don't think Nintendo cares about hardware anymore.

In the Iwata Asks, it was clear they had a razor-sharp focus on keeping the cost down. Nintendo really needs this to be as inexpensive as possible for profit's sake. Goes along with the reasoning for keeping out the AC Adapter, which was suggested by Iwata. It seems they really did their best to make things as good as possible, but budget was a factor in everything that they did to make the system.

Really suggest reading the Iwata Asks to see for yourself. Cost seemed to be a "back of the mind" factor in every choice they made.

Is just me or are the select/home/start buttons barely tactile?

Never used one but I think we all assumed when we first saw images of the XL that they'd be a huge improvement over the 3DS. It's weird to start hearing negative feedback about the new ones. How'd they mess that up? What does it feel like when you press them?

I second the notion of seeing KH3D on this thing. There is a couple videos, but only like 5-10seconds long.

Anyone want to post videos or screens of it on the XL?

Just been looking at Nintendo's repair policy and apparently they have a 3-7 day turn around promise for repairs. Considering sending it to them. Does anyone have any particular positive or negative experience with Nintendo's repair process?

i sent my son's DS in for repairs on a monday and it was back in my hands on friday. I would imagine living in the same state as the repair center may have had something to do with it. The only thing I did not like was they did not tell me what they fixed or what they even did (battery would not charge)

Oh cool. Link? The only statement I ever read was one that doesn't say exactly what the problem was.

The Start, Select and Home buttons are fine. I really don't understand how anyone could not consider these to be way better than the ones on the regular 3DS. The buttons will work no matter where on them you click, and they are proper buttons.

And at worst I don't really have to worry about how I press them lest I fuck up the plastic or something, I can just more carelessly jab in. It's not the biggest deal, but if all else were equal that'd still make XL buttons better.

Oh cool. Link?

Only have links for Amazon pulling the 3DS initially(a couple are listed above). I don't have a screen grab of the note Amazon posted on their 3DS page when this all happened. The other part is assumed after Nintendo hardware all dried up at Amazon US, and inquiries to them came back with responses like, "We can only sell what Nintendo provides us." It's not a difficult dot to connect. Amazon has no reason to not make money off Nintendo hardware. Nintendo has every reason to treat a retailer that dared question their quality control like shit.

Do they register as clicks or are they simply mushy with no tactile feedback? I could see the lack of feedback making some people upset. If they're easier to hit in the dark than the current ones, it's a big improvement imo.

I absutely baby my handhelds and ended up with scratches. Nintendo fixed em and even gave me a brand new one year warranty (my 3ds was just under a year old)

Last year I sent my Aqua unit for repair. During Christmas time. I sent it off, had it back within 12 days, including the shipping to and from. They were extremely fast. I had it back in time for Christmas, which was very surprising. The repair facility is located in Califonia though, my resident state.

They sent a different unit back - transferred everything - without using an ambassador transfer of the 5 available. The unithey sent was better in every single way. The hinge was better. The slider was tight. The screens were cooler white....I loved that unit.

I parted with it for a Midnight Purple, this past May :( (love the Purple though) :)

Nintendo was extremely courteous. They pay for the shipping (you gotta box it and print the label though). They ask you don't include your games and to remove the SD card before sending it in.

Lastly, I phoned them to arrange a repair. You get a better response and quicker service, calling and setting it up. It was free of charge and they extend/restart the warranty period from the time of repair, too. Which is nice of them.

They are not really clicky or mushy, best way I can describe it is it feels like a digital drum machine pad which is odd.

If it helps back in the day my gamecube sometimes gave me disk read errors. I called nintendo and they told me they had a local contractor who did repairs in my city. Drove about 45 mins to get there, left my gamecube over night.

Gotta call the next day, dude said nothing was wrong with it. A week later disk read errors again.

I have a Midenight Purple unit. It gets the vertical lines on the screen protector. My repaired aqua took forever for lines to show up. In both cases they are easily wiped away. My purples sits on a desk (bedroom), next to where my Vita is cradled. Even when I don't touch the system for a day or two, I see the lines have appeared. Nothing sits on top of the unit.

I could see how these lines could imprint into scratches, if pressure is applied over time, traveling with the system in tight pockets.

My question: WHY HAVE NO 3DS OWNERS BANDED TOGETHER to fom a CLASS ACTION SUIT?

Microsoft narrowly avoided one with the 360 RROD issues, Gates instead publicly apologized and issued a long warranty. Sony had to answer to the PS2 Disc read errors.

If the screens and the issue is THAT bad, why are we accepting this from Nintendo?

Are the dots on the XL really screen rubbing? Or are they a manufacture problem? I'm sick of the lines.

edit -

My mistake I'm an idiot.

Just in case anyone else makes the same mistake there is a little dip on the bottom of the depth slider you have to push past a little harder to actually turn the 3d completely off.

Yeah, Rayman Origins 3DS is a fucking disaster of epic proportions. Thankfully for Ubisoft they snuck it out in March so it went pretty much un-noticed. If they'd have launched it day and date last year I think there would have been a shitstorm.

The worst part of the game is not the shitty framerate which leads to laggy controls, but the fact it is literally the console game downsized. It doesn't look appropriately scaled to the correct resolution. Just really, really blurry looking.

Just drained the battery on this playing 3D Land and Kid Icarus, it lasted 4:20, the small one used to last about 3 hours, so not bad.

Thanks dude!

I almost forgot that people on the net are always on the border to craziness.

How was this a crazy thought? When a manufacturer builds a defective product - one which muitlates itself, in the case of 3DS - is it really out of the question for Nintendo to be forced to right a wrong? Let alone acknowledge that the product has a problem?

A class action could cost them a lot of money, but shouldn't they fix the issues of 3DS in a way, where the repaired units don't have the problem recur? Or owners have to retrofit with stoppers? Cloth between screens?

Instead they haven't acknowledged a problem. They haven't been made to. Instead, people are paying good money for a device which damages the most important aspect of use: the display.

Microsoft had legal issues brought about by RROD:

those crazy internet people for wanting non defective products

Sure. I want my hardware to be awesome and perfect.

reality is: shit breaks.
og 3ds was a missconception. It really had some big flaws.
now a new edition is out. A new product line. First batch has flaws. People play it up on forums. Everyone goes crazy.
my unit is awesome and has no errors, and you know what?
nobody talks about that.

one got a unit that has a dead line of pixels (no offens dude, its really damm shitty!).... Let's see how many people will react to that.
thats just the nature of things. People love negative stuff.

...the speaker are shitty though. But i will not organize a mob because of that. Pitchfork and all.

How is the d-pad on it?

It's hard to clearly explain my problem with the 3DS and DSi XL d-pads. Those feel like you have a discrete stiff center and four far apart directions. There isn't much roll to it and you must make pronounced motions to hit each direction. It's not a problem on my DSi so I don't know if it's just a problem my DSi XL and 3DS units or if anyone understands the nonsense I'm typing. I'm just wondering if it's an improvement over the 3DS and DSi XL.

They probably just sent you a refurbished one they had on hand. It's usually faster for them to do that, instead of taking apart your 3DS to figure out the problem and then sending it back. Once they fix yours, it would then be sent to someone else who sent one in for repairs. You can confirm by checking the serial # on it. Did you register it in Club Nintendo? That would have the serial #.

og 3ds was a missconception. It really had some big flaws.
Yeah, even beyond its design shortcomings, it quite literally had a huge variation of possible manufacturing flaws. I had to return my Aqua Blue unit to Amazon back when they still carried it because of squeaky buttons, a wobbly hinge that didn't click, a messed up shoulder button, and a bulging battery cover. I was actually relieved it was riddled with problems because the color was ugly as sin, too. It wasn't until later on that the screen scratching stuff emerged. The Cosmo Black they replaced it with has been pristine with no problems whatsoever, though its L button is slightly mushy (no real snappy click like the R). The OG 3DS must have had a really shoddy manufacturing process to allow for so many things to go wrong.

My first DS Phat also had defective speakers that didn't work at all, by the way. I think I might just be unlucky. Not to mention the dead pixels on some of my other handhelds... I'm glad we don't have rampant dead/stuck pixel problems anymore assuming TheWednesday's unfortunate problem is a fluke.

Nice. How was the battery when you first took it out of the box? Did you have to charge any?

Battery was 3 out of 4 bars when I took it out of the box, but I don't think it was really charged for 75%. It was empty after playing for about an hour, so I fully charged it overnight and I've played Super Mario 3D Land for about an hour today and it's still 4 out of 4 bars full, so I guess it's best to drain it completely when taking it out of the box before you charge it the first time.

Just went to grab my Purple 3DS and look at it. Hadn't touched it all day, had work.

Look along the right side of the screen. Near the "R" for camera, vertically from there:

Hopefully the XL fixes this. Preordered blue.
