Believe it or not, gamers who like the Atelier series are NOT pedophiles

You're supposed to point out that it's an eighth of an inch above her knees, too. Dammit, give me a challenge!

I'm assuming that bringing the name of the show in is out-of-bounds? :lol
Yuru Yuri. Have fun watchin dem animes.

I think we do need to discuss the real dark truth of gaming, though: us Mario Karters really do go around in real life throwing empty turtle shells at innocent people. It's sick and disgusting and we all need help.

Wow. Next you'll be telling me that people who like Call of Duty aren't all secretly planning to murder Russians.

Who are these Gaffers? That's like saying people who play games with anthromorphic characters are furries. Narrow minded.

Play what you want OP and ignore them.

you totally have a fetish for robots, you like lubing up those machines eh?

Wait I rather not hear what my avatar would come across as LOL

Personally I don't play these games because the gameplay looks subpar and the japanese idea of what is 'cute' doesn't register with me at all. I never considered Atelier fans pedophiles though.

The people online that would make that accusation are typical internet armchair paedofinder generals who love to throw the accusation around in order to inflate their credibility with moral indignation. You do yourself a disservice trying to appeal to them because it wont change their minds one damn bit.

I like to think there are some on the fence and just want to hear why people enjoy the games they do.

Worry about what your friends in real life that you see physically have to think. Don't give a shit about what strangers on the internet think. People would never say that shit to your face so don't get your feelings hurt over these creeps that spend more time talking to people online than they do in person.

This is going to sound intensely hypocritical coming from someone who plays a lot of Square Enix games, but the only thing I find off-putting about the Atelier series (visual aesthetics notwithstanding) is the way the games are named. I just can't find it in myself to say I'm playing a game called "Meruru". That sounds like something a great aunt in a tv sitcom would coo at a kid. "Whose a widdle meruru? You're a widdle meruru, dat's who!"

I understand that's totally unfair, and I don't judge the quality of the games based on it, but the name alone has repelled me.

so since this stuff always devolves into Japanese Stuff vs Western stuff, where does Contra fall into all of this, because it out machos the machoest of manly western games

honestly name one dudebro western game 1/57 as manly

Back then it was way more common to just present some "idealized" form of the in-game characters, and someone decided this was the most attractive way to present contra to a western audience.

Doing the same to say, Atelier Totori would be this maybe? Just replace pirate theme with the whole medieval/alchemy thing:

Uncharted_Waters_Cover.jpg

Also the title would probably be changed too, most definitely. Westernize the names and all. They'd probably just reduce the name to "Adventurer of Arland"

Actually, someone should just make old western box art covers for all these games.

It seems to me that people from the outside looking in are far more prone to comparing anime to real life than those that are actually into it. I like (some) moe character designs and archetypes and it's pretty obvious that most are meant to be teenagers, for one reason or another. Even though I like these types of characters in anime/games, I find real life children/teenagers to incredibly annoying and unappealing.

As I stated earlier in the thread, anime characters are an idealized archetype. In the case of moe, their physical appearance is meant to maximize their cuteness with characteristics like big eyes, adorable mannerisms, and a petite body build. Their personalities depend on the archetype but generally speaking, the goal is to maximize the positives of a personality type while eliminating the negatives that generally come with it (i.e child-like innocence but only in situations that would produce a funny gag and not 24/7 like in real life). It's hard to escape the reality that cute can often be summed up as being child-like or underdeveloped, that said, most anime/moe characters simply don't exist in the real world from a physical and/or personality standpoint.

And I won't deny that for some there is a sexual element to it but attacking Atelier games and the like is rather ridiculous considering there is an entire industry that caters to that demographic (hentai anime/manga/games).

Lastly, since we are on the topic of pedophilia, I'd simply like to point out the fact that ~70% of child molestations are perpetrated by family members and ~90% of abusers are in a position of trust and opportunity with the victim. The abuser is usually a family oriented person or an otherwise seemingly nonthreatening person. Generally speaking, the "creepy guy" down the street or on the internet is just that, a creepy guy. Regardless of what you may think of their motives for being into anime/moe/loli characters, unless they are in a position of trust and opportunity with your child, they should be the least of your worries. A person that would molest your child is far more likely to be living under your roof than some random guy on the internet with an underage character avatar.

Sensibility always prevails - well put!

I know its off topic, but this image was used on both NA and JP boxarts:

Nothing was really wrong with the original art, so not sure what was up with the ultra shiny guys.

I love Atelier, because they are amazing JRPG's compared to the shitfest other series are... I only trust Atlus/Falcom/Gust nowadays

I also like the designs, the girls are like 15-16 years old right? I'm 23, and I think bitches that age are hot.

I played it for three hours and the combat and game mechanics turned me off immensely.

The game feels very cheap, almost like a doujin game and the combat put me to sleep

No one's saying if one or the other is necessarily better, just that Contra series was one of the countless targets for "localization" of box art, in this case with the bigger guns and shiny muscles. Honestly the whole box art thing is off-topic, but in that same note I guess it's worth mentioning that the name "Atelier Totori" makes absolutely no sense for anyone unless you've played the series beforehand, or happen to know some French.

Obviously these games are designed partly as masturbation fodder for lonely otakus, that is undeniable. That doesn't mean only they can enjoy them, I'm sure they are competent games beneath the slightly gross exterior.

I really dislike the sexualisation of young girls in Japanese media. However, I don't think the people who like them are paedophiles.

Well done. You've probably made the most sensible, straight-forward post possible considering the way this thread has gone. You have an opinion, but you don't let it warp your judgement. Dare I say we could learn a thing or two from this one, chaps.

In all fairness to the OP, unless people who've played the games in question are actually going to discuss the qualities of those games from now on, all that can be said has already been said - multiple times.

Let us all move on, and enjoy the things we enjoy in moderation whilst having respect for others.

... Is that such a crazy thing to ask? Maybe everyone should have gangster dinosaur avatars, then they'd be as cool as me.

Is ShockingAlberto going to have to share his tag soon?

A grey name because of this? *shakes head* What a lame way to get banned.

I will never understand the mentality of calling women/female with a word like that.

Everything that a japanese person even looked at is for pedophiles according to some people. That's not them attacking the specific property you like, that's them attacking your brain cells. I recommend avoiding further contact.

I've looked at the Atelier stuff before, mostly due to a lack of JRPGs. I figured it was just some obscure but generic JRPG series, but reading this makes it seem a hell of a lot more unique. I'll definitely check them out at some point.

I doubt many people actually think you're a paedophile for liking a video game, it's just an easy way to make fun of you for playing a silly looking game.

Kinda like calling someone a hipster for watching an lame looking indie film, it's just a stupid little jab.

I'm not saying that this is the case, but when someone needs to clarify that a certain group of people is not like others depict them then often that group of people exactly like others depict them.

I can't tell I he got banned for the 15-16 year old part or the bitches part.

until the age of the character in my avatar is revealed, you might want to place me on some potential pedo watch list.

Also, play whatever the fuck you want OP. I get weird looks by saying I like Studio Ghibli movies. To each it's own.
Ugh.

Well, not quite the jab to throw around lightly, but whatever.
