The mental gymnastics involved to defend why someone would voluntarily design a gratuitous underskirt underage shot are as amazing as they are absolutely counterproductive to the point OP was trying to make.
It doesn't really make sense when you quote me, but what I meant was that while this guy might have the wrong idea, at least he's not labelling those who enjoy this type of game. We really shouldn't be labelling anyone, and this thread literally keeps going in circles. For which reason, unless anyone decides to quote me on anything, I'm stepping out now. I'm pretty desensitized to it for the most part. Unless it's overly detailed and graphic. Which I also don't approve of. I mean I been watching anime back when dbz aired on fox kids and vegeta vs goku was something new. Which lead to watching all of eva and most of slayers by 6th/7th grade and tons of other anime. It's like cleavage I just shrug it off
I got good news for you, that was the first arc of berserk and there is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more after that but it's in manga form only

If wikipedia is any indication, that guy has worked on animation and art for a number of widely regarded "serious" anime works in addition to stuff like idolmaster. I doubt there'd be many similarities between Berserk and idolmaster; it's not like the designer's a one trick pony, he's probably used to working on projects with very different tones.

I don't get it either. It's like they never step outside at all. Or even watch TV. As a poster pointed out earlier, the Gymnists on TV during the Olympics must be beyond offensive judging by the reactions.
For the most part, I just gloss over most obvious fanservice things (outside using it to later complain about dat fanservice). Kind of a defeated sigh and a "Seriously?" moment, I guess.

I'm 32 and Gantz is one of the most fun animes (and mangas) I have ever seen/read. The story is rather nonsensical but the character interactions are what really did it for me. Kind of reminded me of a twilight zone episode.
Hey, that's cool. I still liked BLAME cause it has awesome art and architecture porn even though what little story existed was just nonsensical crap.
In the form I'm referring to; shower scenes, breasts bouncing, scantily clad females, a focus on cleavage and panty shots.

I'd say fanservice is gratuitous stuff that doesn't add anything to the game/anime/plot but is just put in to appeal to some audience. Like with the atelier games, it's there cause a major audience wants it to be there.

Fan service = little random nods of stuff the fans want every once in a awhile normally nothing to major. Ecchi = The show is COMPLETELY BASED AROUND perverted FAN SERVICE LIKE THE WHOLE GOD DAMN TIME ummm Horizon this season is a good example.
It's not that the story was nonsensical.. It's just presented in such an obscure and roundabout way with minimal to no exposition that it takes like 5 full reads to understand what the fuck is happening.
It's still one of my favorites though <3

"Fanservice" exist in all mediums from comics, to books, to movies, to music, ect. I don't understand why anime is seen as having more than any other entertainment medium.
As for the underage characters, I generally chalk that up to most anime we see being of the shonen and shoujo variety and being primarily aimed at teenagers/children. Getting worked up over that seems no different than getting worked up over teenage/child characters in a CW or Nickelodeon show or Glee (plenty of adults that watch those shows as well).
I'd go a step further and say U.S television in worse in that there are quite a few reality television shows now that focus on young girls. Would you all consider people that watch those shows to be pedophiles as well?

You forgot to add the sexual element. Because we're clearly exempting Gantz, Beserk, Crying Freeman and Sanctuary (at least until they get to raping).
Maybe, but some people feel the need to assert their shallow accusations, while others feel the need to defend their reasoning for liking the things they do. I can definitely understand taking offense in being labeled in any way based on the games you play, it happens with all kinds of genres. However, it gets way more offensive when the labeling goes from dudebro to pedophile, this should be common sense.
I could care less for any of the fanservice, but I would also like for none of it to be there in the first place if it would dramatically improve its response with a western audience, or heck anywhere really. There's lot of great games to be played that contain some sort of fanservice be it pantyshots or provocative poses which they could do without, but they still make great games. If it's considered overall a great game, I feel I would be missing out if I let minor instances of this dictate whether I buy it or not. I can respect people voting with their wallet for not wanting any of it, just sans part where they go judging others who do buy the games.
I think a more meaningful discussion could be what to do in regards to future games that are common targets for the extra fanservice. It's obvious they're trying to cater to a certain audience, then why not keep it separate of the game itself? Like those expensive special editions that contain extra art or printed cloths or boobie mousepads and whatnot.

MGS is fanservice for military otaku, for example.
The high amount of exercise and extremely low fat percentages wrecks their bodies ability to make hormones and develop. They get drug tested if they were taking something to delay puberty they could get kicked out.

I don't really care about other forms of entertainment since I'm not into them. However, in anime the form of fan-service I'm talking about is generally sexualized and put in there for the viewers in enjoyment.
By the way, I'm not one of the people arguing whether or not you're a pedophile.
