IGN: ""How Sony Won Gamescom Before It Even Started"

This is the second most disgustingly sycophantic gaming article I've ever read*. The highlights/lowlights for me, in bold:

Microsoft should be afraid of Sony. Before the PlayStation publisher’s pre-Gamescom press conference this week, Sony’s foreseeable software future seemed weak. The PlayStation Vita seemed only to have a handful of promising titles for the remainder of 2012 – LittleBigPlanet PS Vita, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, a Call of Duty game we knew next to nothing about, a Persona 4 remake, and a poorly timed Assassin’s Creed tie-in were the PlayStation brand’s best and brightest. But after displaying a strong lineup of exclusive games on both PlayStation platforms, a brilliant new business strategy, and confidence in risky game ideas, Sony’s future couldn’t look better than it does now.

Gamescom will be Sony’s show. This is bad news for Microsoft, who didn’t even bother to show up.

Sony’s Cross Buy announcement undoubtedly earned it a great deal of gamer goodwill. Buying Battle Royale, the new Ratchet & Clank, and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time on PS3 scores you a free Vita copy. This is an incredible move for Sony. These are three of its most popular and promising titles, and you can play them anywhere, any time, for one price. Cross Buy puts PlayStation fans ahead of the curve, and rewards them for purchasing PS3 games they were likely to buy anyway. It looks amazing on the back of the box, it’s something people will tell their friends about, and it makes a Vita worth owning for every single PlayStation fan. That’s just smart marketing.

Until Dawn, Rain, and Puppeteer all represent something astounding about Sony’s initiative toward supporting innovative ideas. Following Papo & Yo, Journey, and many other clever concepts, this trio of games look unlike almost anything you’ve played. Each of them certainly has a niche appeal, but Sony’s willing to risk a limited audience if it means putting exclusive, original games on its platforms. Add in the casual mentions of Beyond: Two Souls and The Last of Us during the conference, and you’re looking at a large stack of Sony-only goods. Oh, and let’s not forget Media Molecule’s cute and creative Tear Away, either.

For the first time since I bought it, I want to play my Vita. A quirky indie game like Sound Shapes reassures me that more great stuff is on the way, and Sony really came out of the corner throwing haymakers. I want Black Ops Declassified because it looks like a true Call of Duty game. Killzone Mercenary is the Sony sequel I want most on the platform I’m aching to play.

Before I came to Gamescom, I played my Xbox more than any other platform. That changes the moment I get back to my living room. All of a sudden, the future of gaming in my life is dominated by a platform I traditionally ignored for my Xbox 360. The level of imagination and accessibility in these original, exclusive games is so much more interesting to me than another Halo game. Make no mistake: I’m thrilled about Halo 4, but it’s the one and only Xbox exclusive I plan to play this fall; the only other two exclusives I can think of in the next few months are Gears of War: Judgment and Fable: The Journey – of those, I only have faith and interest in the former.

Microsoft missed a great opportunity at Gamescom to tell the world about why it should care about Xbox 360, Xbox Live, the fall update, and how it all connects to Windows 8. More importantly, maybe, just maybe, it could have given us a game worth thinking about, investing in emotionally, or getting excited to play with on Surface, Windows Phone, Windows Live, or any other gaming platform it may have on the way. I love my Xbox 360 -- I just want as much a reason to play it as I now have for my PlayStation devices.

Gamescom belongs to Sony, as does my heart. This is a brilliant sign of things to come, and it was all done before the show had even begun.

There isn't a sign of independent thought in here, its pure gush and adoration. Not a single question, considered observation or any sign of actual journalism can be detected within.

Sony have certainly delivered a better show that their E3 shambles (in fairness, everyone was a shambles this E3), but this article isn't positive feedback or commentary, its gushing adoration by a love-struck Sony fanboy.

*Nothing will ever take your crown, MacWorld.

I think there's a valid wider point here just taking PS3 and Sony's pretty consistent flow of interesting new game announcements for it. It'd be nice if MS matched or topped that kind of platform support.

MS: "It's nice to want things"

In all seriousness though, why would MS do that? Americans (the largest market by far in the world) continue to make the 360 the best selling console by far despite the 360 not having many AAA 1st party exclusives. I'm sure MS is seeing Sony's effort and noticing that it's doing little to help the PS3 sell better against the 360. I don't think there's really any incentive for them to match or top the kind of support Sony is offering.

Great showing for Sony in my opinion. They have some great games coming for Vita and the PS3.

In addition to that, the vast majority of their studios are working on projects for PS4. They have their bases covered nicely.

  • Cross Buy is very pro-consumer and should be applauded.
  • Wonderbook has the support of two of the worlds largest companies (BBC and Disney)
  • PlayStation Plus continues to provide value for its subscribers. Probably the most pro-consumer subscription service around.
  • The conference covered everything. PS3, Vita, PSN, Move.

The vast majority of the press has been very positive, so its a big win for them.

Don't want to close my eyes
Don't want to fall asleep
Cause I miss you baby
And I don't want to miss a thing

it's like he got hung out to dry by his bitch of a model girlfriend and decided to take refuge in the arms of the quirky 6/10'er who's been through a lot lately.

Fair enough, so lets remove all Vita talk and all Wonderbook and what was left? Couple new PSN titles and games we already knew about along with a delay on one of the big Xmas titles?

I somehow missed this line. BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I think splitting your editors into different teams is a surefire way to make your journalists into basically fanboys with a press badge.

MS & Nintendo: "Get back to us when that means something."

I dont know what you're trying to say, but I love how Sony announced a couple new games, I'm so excited. I'm saddened by the absence of the other console manufacturers, its like they dont care for me.

You know a generation's gotten long in the tooth when one solid Gamescom conference is enough to make a guy gush like that.

thanks for the laugh

Reads like a fucking press release.

IGN you are so terrible.
I don't think I've ever read such a self-congratulatory press release. No no, credit where credit is due - this reads like a gamefaqs post. Sony rulez, xbawks drools.

You make my brain hurt. This is like Microsoft holding their own X event and Gamespot saying that Microsoft won.

"Meanwhile, Sony was no where to be found..."

No it's nothing like that. I believe Gamescom is larger than E3 in terms of attendance numbers. It's not some unknown backwater event.

On the other hand, I like Gamescom and I want a big European event to counterbalance TGS and E3 getting all the attention. So shame on MS for ignoring it and yay for Sony for not only bringing it, but making it their best show of the year.

Well, I agree with them.
Not sure if I should quote your avatar or your Xenosaga thread. :p

Whatever about sales reports, whether MS thinks its necessary or not, it would make for a more interesting platform, IMO. I don't think any Xbox owner can argue that a similar flow of new game announcements as Sony offers for PS3 would not be a good thing...I'm sure they'd have liked a matching level of new creative interest from MS this week in addition to all else the platform offers. I think it might also do them some favours not to rest on their laurels with new console choices to be made in the next couple of years... help build trust and loyalty and excitement for what will come out of a platform holder on new hardware. I feel like MS doesn't have that kind of accumulated interest in the same way.

This is IGN style anyway. They have the ign editors write articles about the console holder they write about fuck up and how the other side did it so much better. They know it get clicks and it stirs the pot.

I saw three new good to great looking original ip ps3 games outside of the wonder book stuff. Another two or three from MS would have been cool, I guess?

And yet it doesn't seem to be hurting them.

If that article was about Microsoft or Nintendo would you feel the same way?

Journalistically, can you defend this line in any way besides desperation/fanboyism/click generations?

Gamescom belongs to Sony, as does my heart.

If that article was about Microsoft or Nintendo would you feel the same way?

Absolutely. Its pure sycophancy, regardless of who it is aimed at.

These people are meant to give us supposed journalism, at least in theory. If they have this much unadulterated love for any platform holder, they become increasingly incapable of being critical or reporting on negative as well as the positive.

Not to mention that, when you edit out the fanboyism, there is little of actually measurable substance to the article. Its praise, with no concrete observations, facts or even considered opinions. Its gush.
