IGN: ""How Sony Won Gamescom Before It Even Started"

Am I the only one who feels that many of IGN articles including their reviews are more like opinion pieces and not proper journalistic write ups?

It's also a problem when their reviews are less about the game and more about the hype surrounding it. The Silent Hill HD Collection for example got a 9/10 from the same person citing how good the source material was, with no comments on the poor port itself.

Sony fans really needed this kind of article after the latest doomfest threads that have been appearing lately
Ign you can count with.

He gets paid to do it and his job is based on kickbacks from publishers. Lets not kid ourselves in thinking these guys who work at gaming mags/sites are just biding their time pimping the companies they want to work for. Case in point:

This is why I don't trust fluff articles made by the gaming press.

God, the sony ass kissing he did was priceless. I miss the days of Luke Smith making him look stupid every week.

I can respect that logic though. The PSX versions of Final Fantasy V, VI, and Chrono Trigger are all terrible ports all around but I'd still give them extremely high marks for being three of the best RPGs ever made.

Not only this. If you write something positive you get access. If you write something negative they threat you as a journalist like unwelcomed customer. Thats why you never read something really negative about the big players like EA, Activision, Sony, MS, Nintendo and so on. Gaming journalism is not yet journalism. Its more or less pr.

I could see them getting behind the Eurogamer article more than this which reads like something you'd see on Gamtrailers forums

there are extremely few people that are completely unbiased when it comes to a platform. doesn't mean that they arn't quality posters

again though, i said degrees - i wholly admit i like sony and nintendo 1st/2nd (ish) party offerings more than MS, personally. i dont like paying for live, don't like their cert process/costs and several other things, but i also don't want them gone or celebrate any losses they take, nor do i shit up their respective threads or feel compelled to post GO TEAM! threads for the other 2, etc etc.

i operate under the assumption that most gaffers have likewise preferences but similarly go wherever there's games. i'm not looking 100% objective robots, just people on the far opposite end of the spectrum from cheerleaders, apologists and shills, and when measured against the average gaming forum/blog, i find GAF largely delivers this. if that hasn't been your experience, i'm kinda sorry to hear that, maybe i'm reading/frequenting different threads.

All these SONY IS AWESOME articles are hilarious.

Nothing they've shown at this conference will help the company itself.

What? So what. Microsoft and Nintendo are doing really bad as well. These articles are not about their profitability, but pleasantly surprised that Sony actually showed stuff.

Can see you getting a lot of shit for this.

That being said, his whole company sing & dance that he's been doing for so many years was and continues to be embarrassing beyond belief, and it sometimes boggles the mind that he isn't called out more often because of it, but instead gets this royal "mancrap" treatment from his loyal followers.

Being a shill pays I guess. In more ways than one.

Am I being cynical after reading this and the EDGE articles for thinking that Sony did some moneyhatting of game journo outlets as part of its Gamescom PR blitz?

Everyone knows Shane is a huge Sony shill.

If they did they wasted pr money that should be saved for later this year.

They both read like Sony had a good showing at Gamescom, which seems to be something that a lot of people in this thread are very bitter about.

No, the IGN article is fluff piece silliness. Despite what you want to believe, the hate is towards the journalist, not Sony.

I can respect that logic though. The PSX versions of Final Fantasy V, VI, and Chrono Trigger are all terrible ports all around but I'd still give them extremely high marks for being three of the best RPGs ever made.

My chief complaint wasn't the score, it was that the technical issues weren't mentioned anywhere on the review. Makes me question whether they spent quality time with the game or just approached it purely using their knowledge and preconceptions of the originals.

Remember when publishers had an invite only to E3? Only people who wrote positive articles about their companies were allowed to attend E3 and cover their games.

Spot on.

Sony unveiled some interesting stuff at Gamescom, and definitely did a lot better than E3. Good for them. IGN on the other hand have really shown themselves up, especially when contrasted with EDGE's far more insightful and considered analysis.

People could be less defensive, I'm not targeting Sony with my ridicule, and haven't been anywhere in the threads.

And when you want to stay relevant you have to apply to this. And it didnt change alot, believe me. Everytime you read "worldexclusive test" or something like that, you can almost be sure, someone sold his integrety for this.

yes, you are being cynical - given the recent turgid sony showings the fact they've showed some genuinely interesting -new- IPs should -NOT- require a money hat to generate excitement from "the press"

"oh i don't know - I just can't see this End Cynicism movement lasting!" ;)

Sony already is ahead in the Euro land. However they are doing great to maintain it.

Unlike US, Consoles Sales in Germany are increasing i read.

@ others

we are allowed to have Vita doomed thread ? Sony doomed thread ?

but when a praise thread appears its just PR bullshit ? Yeah right.

Havent you heard about Nintendo is doomed since "insert date"?

Ok PS is still huge in Europe but on a large scope of it all winning Gamescom means nothing. Same with E3. The only times when it might matter is when you are launching new hardware. You don't want to do shitty job like big N did two years running.

Exactly, I don't understand what the fuss is about. Is it somehow not allowed to gush about a platform holder that looks to have a pretty spectacular lineup of games coming out in the next year?

Really. You think Microsoft would wow us at Gamescom? :P

It'd be the same thing

No i mean literally. ;)

MS never impress anymore so no, i dont think they would have wowed us but at least we would get a little more info on games other than Halo4 and Halo4......right? They do have other games dont they?

LOL. It's the same thing every freaking year and yet the sales just don't justify the fawing for Sony.

Great if you love the PS3 and Sony. I just get so tired of the cheerleading.

I really had no idea that people are suppose to adjust their hype base on sale potential.

What? All three aren't doing so hot in profitability. And why does that matter? How come there is always a few of you that jump on that boat, "BUT BUT their stock isn't doing so well!" So what! I'd be on an economy message board if that's all I cared about in the game industry.

Yea, you're right. And I think they have Forza and Gears. I'm just guessing, that's usually what they show at every E3; HALO, FORZA, GEARS!

Am I being cynical after reading this and the EDGE articles for thinking that Sony did some moneyhatting of game journo outlets as part of its Gamescom PR blitz?

Is it really that hard to accept that Sony had a good showing at Gamescom and the gaming press is simply reacting positively?

I'm kind of surprised that so many people are freaking out about that IGN article. Must be a lot of Xbox fans posting. He did gush way too much, and there are some dumb lines in there, but the sentiment is 100% correct.

The media has been all over Microsoft for years now, even though they have nothing really going for them except the sales lead. They've been last place at E3 for 3 years. They aren't even going to show up at TGS, and they skipped Gamescom. This is a gigantic year for Sony, even if the sales don't fully reflect it.

If this is the beginning of a media course-correction, where they begin to look at the major players again instead of just worshiping Xbox, then I say it's about damn time. It's not like Sony didn't have a decent E3 either. By most accounts they had a better show than Microsoft by showing off 1) Beyond, 2) God of War, and 3) Last of Us, while MS just had Halo 4 and Nike Calorie Counter. Then Gamescom, with 1) cross buy, 2) puppeteer, 3) until dawn, 4) rain, 5), unfinished swan, 6) Soul sacrifice, 7) tear away, 8) more PS+ Deals, 9) Assassin's Creed Liberation, 10) Killzone Vita, 11) PS1 Classics Vita support, 12) Final Fantasy XIV Console Exclusivity, 13) Playstation Mobile, and on and on and on and on .... (and this is right after putting out Gravity Rush, Sound Shapes, Dyad, Malicious, Tokyo Jungle and Papa & Yo!) Then they're probably going to have a pretty strong TGS as well right after, with Versus XIII possibly showing and still being a Sony exclusive, maybe a reveal of Type-0 on Vita, or FFX HD Remix, maybe some footage of The Last Guardian in addition to other stuff we don't even know about yet. And this isn't counting some of the other 3rd party exclusives on the way, like Ni No Kuni.

Sony is throwing out so much insane stuff now that honestly, they completely deserve a little bit of gushing for once. Lament the fall of "journalism" if you must, but you guys just sound bitter. It's kinda nice to see someone excited about gaming for once, instead of being a cynic all the time.

And furthermore, I think the more interesting story is how far E3 seems to have fallen. It looks like Gamescom and TGS are going to be far more interesting this year. E3 is now the place you go to show FPS games, explosions, ultra-violence, and motion control games.

Sony had some good showings, but it's not a race if no one else attends.

It's like pinning a ribbon on a fat kid in a 100m, it means nothing.

The realistic person in me tells me Sony had a good conference, but it's too early to be celebrating like this.

The fanboy in me tells me Sony had a good conference, but it's still not enough to turn around the vita.

Now who to follow..

Is it really that hard to accept that Sony had a good showing at Gamescom and the gaming press is simply reacting positively?

Acting positively is one thing, acting like a gushing fanboy spewing hyperbole is another thing entirely and pretty much why the gaming press isn't taken seriously for the most part...

Yeah poor Sony, they never get any recognition....

People gets excited way too easily. I mean, before Gamescom (which was a great show for Sony), Vita seemed doomed, and PS3 was going to be just fine since this gen is practically over and no one really cares since games are coming for every system out there (and Sony first party line up is looking sick as usual).

Now we get some games (some of which we already knew about) the promise of PS1 games on Vita (promise since they'll release a couple of games every now and then keeping everyone wanting for more and we all know it) and "wow Sony is so good Microsoft should be very afraid".

Come on. Just kill these agonizing generation and let us have fun xD

Find the problem. And ask yourself why it turn out the way it is.

Sony had some good showings, but it's not a race if no one else attends.

It's like pinning a ribbon on a fat kid in a 100m, it means nothing.

Not that it would have made any difference to Sony's position in the race even if MS did show up.

Acting positively is one thing, acting like a gushing fanboy spewing hyperbole is another thing entirely and pretty much why the gaming press isn't taken seriously for the most part...

The person I quoted believes that Sony paid gaming outlets to publish positive articles on their Gamescom conference.

Find the problem. And ask yourself why it turn out the way it is.

The sales actually do. They have sold more than MS in total since the PS3's release. Besides Sales depend a lot on marketing which Sony is poor at. Either-ways it has nothing to do with the quality of their software output which is consistent and great unlike most of MS offerings. Thank God for XBLA otherwise it would be worse. Nintendo have done jack shit for Wii the last couple of years when I expected them to really go out with a bang. They have also made it even worse for non Japanese customers. So yeah..

Pretty ironic they post this "love letter" the same day the give out the lowest score of any site for Papo & Yo (a ps3 exclusive), and by a lot.

Also Colin has turned into Mr negativity lately all things Sony. So I don't agree that ign has a bias, they just write dumb articles.
