have there really never been any real tests done about these "speeds"..? judging by this thread it is only from peoples own expirience.
is this a joke post ?Pretty sure that feature is Xbox exclusive
Well obviously there's something in the PS3's infrastructure that doesn't allow everything to work just like the Xbox 360. I'm just being practical. There's an easy fix: hit one button and make it download in the background.
Everything sony does requires an extra step, even their websites. I have to log on to their playstation.com, click blog and you have to log on to that, go to SEN and you have to log on to that, want to post on their forum and you have to log on to that.
Single Sign On please Sony, Single Sign On.
I always read about slow downloads from PSN, but mine have always been as fast as my pc, and when I had one, xbox 360. Never have had this slow download problem...
Lol. User fail. Just download in the background next time

There a bit different here though, since on PSN you're only presented with one option, and that is to do background download (well, there also the option of canceling it i guess, but that choice is self explanatory). Otherwise you're stuck at the download screen right there.Remember how people made fun of Vista for having so many options in the shutdown menu?

In my view this is the same thing. The user shouldn't have to know that one approach is better than another. Either both should be resumable or PSN should automatically move large downloads to background mode automatically.

I havnt read every post in this thread, but i would guess that the blaming is more about saying how poor the system is when a single press of a button could solve the problem. The OP said he used background downloading before, so at least he knew about that feature, but unfortunately he didnt know about the resume part.I don't think PSN has too many options, but blaming the user for not using background download when it should be directed toward PSN for not support resume in Active Downloads.
The CELL processor is capable of a lot of things heheI've noticed a correlation between how much people like PS3 exclusives and PSN download speeds. The ones that hate them seem to also have pretty shitty speeds and the ones the like them get fast speeds. Its like Sony knows...

People who experience slow download may also have HDD (or file system) issues. It's hard to tell unless a techie goes down and troubleshoot the issue one by one. ^_^
I remember someone here has fast speed on 1 PS3, and slow speed on another PS3 in the same household.
My PS3 network speed is quite close to a PC/Mac.
There's no speed problem with PSN. I'm wireless (yes i am) and i download on PSN at almost 1MB/sec, my maximum internet bandwidth, so...
In fact, i never had a single problem with PSN apart from that PSN hacks one year ago.
Not making excuses. It's obviously their fault. I'm just saying, it's not a big deal to hit one button. The OS for the PS3 was designed by Sony, so it's their fault. No need for excuses.
They also have a completely different website for each region of the world, because that makes a ton of sense. Some have PSN friends list features that other don't, etc. It makes absolutely no sense.
Europe has an official iPhone PSN app, while the rest of the world doesn't. lol
Pretty sure it varies by region and by how many servers Sony has in that area.

Bunch of drama queens in this thread.
Classic Sony there.
I've always found trouble with PSN in everything. Downloads, lag with online play. Whenever I play SSFIV its like I'm playing underwater. It's shitty.
With speeds that low already of course you have no problems.
The modem may also have an effect. I switched from 10MB to 40MB connection, and changed a modem as well, as a result my Wi-Fi download speeds went drastically down. EDIT: I also had hard time accessing and browsing the PSN Store, let alone play online. It all changed when I switched to wired connection.

Did you manage to get the bandwidth back up ?
Apparently I must be a strange sort of creature to actually use my PS3 for other stuff while downloading something. There is a gigantic glowing "download in background" button there for a reason.
Being constructively critical and giving feedback is dramatic? What?
And find me someplace where Sony themselves give this "reason".
Who would want to wait still, doing nothing with the system while downloading? Perhaps Sony thought it was obvious to people, that the larger files are better to be downloaded in the background. At least it was obvious to me.
- background downloading is a bit faster.
- wired PS3 are MUCH faster.
- check what's your NAT type by doing a connection test. If you're NAT3, the slowness is your fault...
I literally wasn't going to do anything with my console which is why I left it like that. It's not a big deal but its still bad design and it's stupid to blame the user.
PSN in general is horrendously slow. I bet the 10 gig install would have taken a hour or two easily.
I often leave the system to download as well, and go do something else in the mean time, but always in the background. I download only the smallest files (like themes and skins) while I'm in the store.
Again, I understand that now, but it's still a poor design choice from jump to design ittat way, and on top of that, to not have some sort of little pop up window or something that simply explains the differences or suggests why you should use one method or the other. The fact that you have to go on a message board to figure this out indicates really poor software design. That's all.
PSN is the slowest piece of trash ive encountered.
XBLive downloads are fast for me, all my wifi devices (ipad 2, galaxy s3) max out on speedtest, so its not my secured home network... its the trash canadian PSN service.
Go to hell sony
