It's the wrong impression. "Android" is not really one thing in a practical sense. The people who complain about android phone typically got the shittiest one for free with a contract upgrade. Flagship Android devices are as good, if not better than the annual iPhone.

Perhaps I had a bad one, but my iPod touch straight up died. Stopped opening apps, force closed others, random reboots, etc.
 
Question, is the 1 billion award higher or lower than what Apple asked?

Apple was asking for 20-30 per device for how many devices?

Arguing that software patents are invalid on the face of it needs to be done at another time and place not at Apple v. Samsung. It essentially needs to be fixed by the legislature. We just need to reach the tipping point.

If Apple just -sits- on this and doesn't use it to sue anyone else, damage will still be done - lot of people are going to be shitting bricks over their software now, and patent trolls (real ones) are probably going to be reinvigorated by this.

Patent trolls didn't need to be invigorated. They'll keep churning through the system with method patents out in East Texas. It'll be interesting to see if Google ultimately removes these patented features (301 and 381) from Android or if the handset makers do it themselves. Finding infringing across the board gives Apple a lot of leverage and since the patent isn't standards essential they have no requirement to license it.

If Jobs hadn't have been recorded as saying that "great artists steal" line in reference to himself before locking everything down then this would be a lesser issue for me. He leaves a hypocritical legacy.

Dunno who this is directed at - but I don't think Apple is a patent troll - I think Apple is a company who is taking far too many liberties with the patent system, to a point where it will be a detriment - specifically for software developers.

Google so far hasn't really done much to flex their new patent portfolio, if the Notification patent goes through and they go after Apple - apart from a part of me hoping that Apple gets knocked on their ass a bit for all their patent shennanigans, I would be pretty worried about the crumbling state of the mobile software industry.

When did Google last use their patents in the aggressive, anti-competitive "we're going to fucking WAR to kill our competitors" way Apple constantly does? That's right. Google bought Motorola for their patents in order to be able to defend themselves, Android and their Android partners against the like of Apple.

That a judge has ordered 1 billion dollars in "damages" be paid with no hint of parody to proceedings is definitely "I don't want to live on this planet anymore" material.

What everyone needs to start taking from this case is that the American patent system NEEDS to be overhauled, especially when it comes to software.

In this day and age the worst case scenario of all this shit, the way i see it, is either a market crash or a complete slowdown of innovation.

1 billion is really not alot of money consider how much google has paid for Motorola's patent. The going price for mobile patent is very expensive.
 
Guys you think software patents are bad, you should see the biotech industry. A couple years ago scientists were trying to patent parts of the human genome.

Yup. So the answer to the question is no. No, Android fans don't hold Google to the same standard. Instead, they revert to specious arguments of who started what or if one lawsuit is the equivalent of another.

So, really, the vigor with which some of you believe software patents to be "bad" is predicated on who is presently (ab)using them.

The shit Monsanto does disgusts me. They could do so much good with some of their tech, but instead they abuse intellectual rights and manipulate their products to not be as good so they make more money. Patents are balls in so many fields.
