Is GAF too strict?

Not for a really long time. I don't remember if SunkisTim got banned or just demodded after a couple days on the job eons ago.

Several of us have records from before we were moderators, but I do not think I have ever heard of a moderator being banned while s/he was a moderator.

Interesting, but I guess only an Admin can ban / unmod someone right?

Also, I've been banned twice now and don't plan on getting banned again. Both for my own stupidity. Hitokage I think you banned me in the Chick-fil-A thread.

Lesson learned, don't be a troll. :)

I never understood why wanting a port was viewed dimly as 'port begging' or why it's bannable. It seems so extreme to make wanting a game to come to a certain platform a bannable offense. I'm guessing it's some system wars thing from before my time.

I've seen it become really annoying. Most notably with Epic Mickey where every thread on it half consisted of posts of "this looks amazing, its not just going to be on Wii, right?", "360 port please", etc...

Yeah, system wars history. I think over time it tended to be less about enthusiasm for the product and more about taking a shot at the system. Think less "Man, this game looks awesome and I'd really like to play it, but don't have System X," and more "Pfftt... System X exclusive. They should put it on System Y so that people actually get a chance to play it."

GAF is not a frathouse.

I know that there are lots of contexts where it's "okay" (in the sense that nobody local will judge you negatively for it) to turn to your manly bros, indicate a hot woman on TV or walking outside or in a naked photo you snagged off your buddy's hard drive, and say "I would split that open like a Christmas turkey."

There are other contexts where this is not okay. GAF is one. Off-topic posts about how hot a woman referenced in a thread is, or telling people to FHUTA/masturbate/whatever, or content-free threads about some random chick filled with exhortations to behave like a creepy perv, aren't appropriate here. Act like you'd act in mixed company, in an environment where random ogling isn't appropriate.

Now that I can post again, I'd like to say that I have a very real problem understanding this.

Someone mentioned above about walking on eggshells and that seems to be exactly what you have to do around here because there are so many mixed messages sent by different moderators.

For years, at least the 8-9 years I've been here, certain frathouse type of humor and posting has been allowed. Sometimes it gets out of hand and the mods slap people down and people get the message. FHUTA comes to mind.

I literally spent 2 days fuming trying to understand why I got a 1 week ban from this thread:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=487831

Anyone that said the word masturbate in that thread got a 1 week ban. So many people were doing the same thing and getting banned that they had to lock the thread to stop the bloodbath. You ever think, hmmm... why are so many people getting banned for the same thing? Well.. because its been an acceptable thing around here for YEARS, and no one thought differently.

I spent the first couple of days wondering if the mods were changing the tone of the board and certain types of posting and responses were no longer acceptable. They've been acceptable in the past, at least until it gets out of hand. So I thought.. well maybe its getting out of hand and the mods are changing things.

But then I spend the next week finding countless threads that are similar in the sense of being a 'frathouse' type of thread, and people giving countless responses in the thread similar to 'frathouse' responses, and some people even giving the type of responses that resulted in mass bannings from the thread above.

Yet no one gets banned. And there are no mod warnings, and its business as usual.

This is why people have to walk on eggshells, or in many cases, just simply refrain from posting at all - and I don't think that's what the mods want. You want to have a vibrant community, with everyone playing nice according the rules. But the question is - what are the rules? And why are some rules selectively applied. And why aren't warnings given out instead of dropping the banhammer on ususpecting people when the mods decide to change the rules or the tone of the board?

I'm curious about the mod's peer review process in banning. Has anyone ever disagreed with handing out a ban, or has there ever been a ban overruled by committee? Or is it a case of where everyone agrees to simply check off the 'ban him/her' box on the form because its just easier to do it and it keeps peace and harmony in the kingdom so that they can roll on with other business?

The reason I was given for the ban was that it was "An attention seeking shit thread that only consisted of replies that said "MASTURBATE" or "HAVE SEX WITH HER" or something to that effect.

I didn't mean to get anyone else banned, I feel pretty awkward about that. And it sucks that the sequel to that thread will remain forever in my memories. One day, I'll make GAF proud.

See, I understand why I was banned both times, and I accept it. I screwed up. The second time I was just doing it as a joke, I didn't realize the mods would take it that seriously. I mean, that kinda thing has happened a ton of times. Was I an example? I dunno.

The first time, I understood why. But since then, I've seen posts that used 'bitch', but I accept Mumei's reasoning that mods just haven't seen it, missed it, or somehow the context was different. I'm chalking it up to mods just reading over it most of the time. Like, I call one individual in someone's story a bitch. Two weeks out. I get that. But I read someone else do the same thing several weeks after, and... nothing? Though, I don't bother going back and checking, so maybe those individuals were already hit with a ban after the fact.

I am curious though if someone PMed a mod about my use of 'bitch', since I got hit with a ban like three days after I made that post which confused the hell out of me.

But stuff gets missed, I get it. Whatever, I'm gonna avoid this kinda stuff as best I can.

Or maybe it's cause I'm brown.

It's probably not because I'm brown.

^^ I must say my butt (and tongue, my buttongue) is still sore about that too.

Seems like this new "GAF isn't a frathouse" ruling didn't stick or will be rarely loosely enforced.

My post was a direct mock recommendation to the thread poster (above :P) on how to not leave any doubt of his intents, it wasn't a "derogatory" remark on the susceptibility of women to crass displays!
One week ban. I was left to assume that I was already marked by post history for a (short) ban, since posts like "have a threesome" or "just because the girl left means the party has to end!" were unscathed in the very same topic.

I did appreciate the recommendations, as mocking as they may have been.

You guys need to realise that GAF isn't fair in any way. Don't try and find logic in anything. Just assume that one day, you will be banned, it will be unfair, and moderators will claim it was fair and in line with the rules. Eventually we'll all be perma banned. We will all die.

Yeah not really happy with the ban I got from that thread either.

Here's my post from that thread

WHEN IN DOUBT JUST WHIP IT OUT

Stupid yes. But certainly not something I'd expect to be banned for. Especially since I've seen this post get made before by other users and that user not be banned. Hell I've posted this before and not gotten banned for it.

When in doubt, whip it out?

"When in doubt, whip it out."

Serious answer: "Time is the fire in which we burn."

When in doubt just whip it out.

Also, when in doubt, whip it out.

When in doubt, whip it out.

With the first two posters I quoted here I looked through their post history and saw no significant amount of time between posts. The other 2 posters, their post history doesn't go back far enough. And I well, didn't get banned the first time I said it. Which is why I thought it'd be fine to use again and didn't break any rules.

I know the mods don't read every thread but fuck, you can see why it's frustrating on our end. How was I supposed to know I would get banned for that if I saw myself and others post it and not get banned for it before?

It's very confusing.

Also frustrating to see a thread like this

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=488273

and nothing happen.

Don't really like ratting people out and I hope the people in that thread don't get banned because I'm posting this here now but seeing a thread while I got banned for my post is, again, confusing.

Trying to describe an all encompasing ban theory is not really possible with the variety of mods. The legal term "arbitrary and capricious" comes to mind, despite certain set rules that are by and large great for the community.

So who's alt are you again and what were you permabanned for? Was it for being really annoying?

GAF seems to strict once you start posting, but after a while you start to realize that GAF's rules have a positive impact on the forum.

Has it already been suggested that many people on this website are overly sensitive and that everything here sorta feels like it's about being politically correct?

Just curious, there are a lot of pages in this thread and I don't want to read them all. I'm not sure how I feel about GAF being too strict, but I'm curious about that sentiment and I'd like to see how the discussion went.

What's the max ban limit on this forum? I have already been banned one for "thread shitting." I said it was a stupid thread and bam! a two week ban haha

You want someone to recap the whole thread for you because you want to know, but don't want to read it? Good luck with that.... lawl

I was hoping someone could direct me to where in the thread it may have been discussed (on the off chance that they know) so I could check it out

I don't think that's too ridiculous of a question.

Hm, would definitely like to see a response about what bill posted above. There isn't a thread about a woman on this site (the olympics athletes, Kim Kard, whoever) that doesn't have a fair amount of "would" posts which would be my definition of the frat house mentality. Yet those threads are not giant graveyards of bannings.

You're the fifth most frequent poster in this thread. Would have thought you'd know better than the rest of us.

I like NeoGAF's community just fine.

I am not above criticism nor are any of the other mods

But most of the community that you like just fine have had little trouble not getting banned so your little we will be banned by the big bad illogical mods act is tired

Legitimate issues I want to learn about and address

Your endless shtick isn't helping

I get that they might seem overly sensitive, but is it not understandable that making fun of something some people make a huge part of their life might upset some folks?

There was a mass banning of people who posted "would" in a thread a while back, but I guess banning "would" didn't stick, because people still post it all the time.

Wait, seriously?

*edit*

Holy shit, I don't even remember making these posts.

Absolutely, I understand what you're saying. I guess my problem is moreso with people who go through posts just looking for something to get bent out of shape over and start arguments related to being politically correct.

Well, that's good to hear, or not.. since I'm against banning for anything but hate speech and Nintendo fanboyism.

I was banned once for a week for a stupid joke I made. Thought a week was a lot of a first offense in addition to me not thinking the offense was that bad, but meh, is one week the minimum?

I've also thought GAF was too strict occasionally when I see people get banned for stuff and just ask myself "really....for that?". Either the mod was in a bad mood or just wanted to set an example. Doesn't happen a lot, but every so often.

What was the joke? And people can be banned for like a day.

I don't see how people can be made into examples when the reason they're banned isn't stated. Obviously if someone posts an account suicide thread or something blatantly offensive you know why they were banned, but that's hardly being made an example of. Just as a recent example, I saw the user Bombadil get banned and I thought I'd check his history to see what might have done it. I honestly couldn't find something banworthy anywhere. However, his recent posts were mostly in the Bill Nye creationism thread which I think most of us experienced readers would classify as a minefield thread. But I mean here.. maybe someone else can see something I didn't:

edit: now that I think about it.. wasn't there an outside website that tried to catalogue gaf bannings and the reasons?

Sorry, was messing with you a little there. c/ped a post of yours from earlier in the thread. ;)

Your link doesn't work, and yes there was @ one point, and yes we've had a thread on it. All I remember is that it didn't work out really well.

Oh god. I don't know what to believe anymore.

I need to stop posting for a week. I post too much.

Can a mod ban me for a week please?

The mods should just give us one thread where we can do/say/post whatever we want in it without any moderation - I'm sure it would become a flame thread but it would satisfy some of our urges to be jerks once in awhile :)

Aw, don't take it like that. It happens to us all.

Two-minute hate thread?

(incidentally, the last one of those is also the only time I've been legit banned :/)
