I don't know if the trade in prices are going to change, but Amazon and Best Buy have pretty good trade in prices (about $200-$250 for a 16GB).

Definitely. I own an iPhone 4 and it's the best phone I've ever used. But Facetime is a gimmick.

Considering neither are gimmicks, 2012 is rightly setup to continue forward progress with super sized but still manageable screens. Also known as Trueview.

Siri still needs a lot of work, true. That said, the feature is not even a year old yet. There's still time for it to become a lot more useful.
Facetime a gimmick, though? LOL.
Repackaging a feature that had existed for years before and calling it revolutionary is a gimmick.
Not a gimmick. It's got by far the best video quality/smoothness of any video conferencing program I've seen, MILES better than Skype. It's also so easy to use that I taught my parents and we keep up that way. Definitely NOT a gimmick.
Siri, I'd tend to agree until they integrate it into cars and get it working reliably (I'm not holding my breath), but Facetime is not a gimmick.
Smartphones with touchscreens existed before the iPhone. By your definition, iPhone is a gimmick.

Pleeeease. Facetime is no gimmick. You can maybe make the argument for Siri (unless you use it to improve productivity) but Facetime? No sir.
Video quality and ease of use (and setup!) destroys all over chat services.

I'm not even sure it will get a major camera update.
Samsung had an 8mp in the Galaxy S2 and still stuck with an 8mp camera with the S3.
Admittedly they did switch to a superior camera lens, the same camera lens found in the iPhone 4S.

Facetime looks brilliant and is very very easy to use. No need to be logged in or anything.

The general consensus was that video chat on phones was a gimmick prior to it appearing on iPhones, considering how little interest american carriers had in implementing the standard europe/asia had for years and various comments/trolling brought up in response to those who criticized the iPhone for not having a front facing camera.

Sarcasm aside. Retina display is awesome. It's one of the things that Apples does so well: Moving the industry forward towards a desirable improvement.

C'mon guys, facetime is an huge gimmick i've done videochat 5 years before the iphone4... it was at lower resolution? Sure but it was 5 freaking years before the "revolutionary" facetime... and it was already possible in 3g unlike iphone4.

My AT&T contract ended yesterday. I am jumping to a T-Mobile monthly pre-paid plan.
$30 - 100 minutes talk time, unlimited text + unlimited web (For extra minutes, I will just use the vonage app that allows for free calls withing the US over wi-fi/celluar data).
If you use more minutes, they have a plan that is
$50 - unlimited talk, text and web. An extra $15 and you can enable mobile hot spot as well and run your iPad off that.
Hopefully something much better. Kind of a big influence on my potential purchase.
Probably passbook/NFC related.

my girlfriend and I have used it quite a bit, and my uncle and aunt use FaceTime with their grand kids also
I want to be clear. I still think iPhone 4 and 4s were the best respective phones their year, but for things like build quality, software and overall integration of UI to hardware. Not for over-rated features like FaceTime and Siri.
But the gap is closing. I'm glad other companies are keeping Apple on their toes. It's going to be harder and harder for Apple to pull away strongly in the years to come.

So do carries ever offer upgrades before the 2 years is up? I mean, I got an iPhone 4s in June and I love it, but if I want the new one it will be like $600 or $700? Some type of trade in through Verizon or anything, or am I all on my own?
It's a shame WP8 and android weren't enough to get apple to implement NFC, unless it makes a surprise appearance this week.

My wife and I use FaceTime at least a few times a week. We have a 10-month old and the grandparents have IPads or iPod touches and they LOVE it. Ease of use helps - my parents could not get their heads around Skype. Gimmick or not, it's a feature that has made video chatting more accessible to the tech-phobic.

Essentially nowhere and never in the US. I don't think Apple will use it.
My relatives call video chat "Facetime" and I don't think they even know the difference.
Nah, Apple isn't that kind of company. Too calculated. They'll think of a gimmick and just focus and indulge heavily in it whether it's worth the fan fare or not.
It works out because they're marketing approach is much better than their competition's.
