Borderlands 2 - PC Performance Thread

Everything was already done engine-wise with BL1 3 years ago. They wanted to concentrate more on content than trying to create a DX10/11 graphical masterpiece.

I would have settled for some real anti-aliasing and compute shader optimizations, but I guess a console port will always be a port no matter how much you gussy it up.

Come on now. We have seen low consoles ports can go fairly recently. This is a fantastic port.

PHYSX ON HIGH HAS NO BEARING ON PERFORMANCE (AMD 6970 here)

Cross posting this for AMD users. I see the swaying flags and extra effects and fps stays solid 60.

CPU is a 2500k@4.8ghz

Competent? Yes. Better than the majority of other console ports this generation? Most likely so. Fantastic? Not by any stretch of the imagination.

I just tried it. Hang on I will show you. 5 minutes.

Maxed out on my 670 @ 2560X1440 minor dip into the 50's when the fluid PhysX shows up.

The fluids I have seen so far just DO NOT look good at all.

Still leagues better than BL1.

Indeed it is. I'm not saying that this BL2 is unacceptable or unplayable on the PC, I'm just tired of people praising ports that lack basic IQ options and performance optimizations as a result of being built on a nearly 10-year-old API. I thought we'd get something a bit more robust out of an Nvidia sponsorship.

2560 x 1600 downsampled to 1920 x 1200 and forced 8x MSAA and so far my machine has been able to maintain 60 fps locked. I haven't taken the time to see if the MSAA is actually making a difference. There are still some minor jaggies on the black outlines in the distance. I'll mess around with it tomorrow, time to go to bed tonight.

SLI GTX 680 all maxed out ~120fps, weird thing using steam ovelay it goes up to 190fps and no mouse cursor. Both GPU's only at 50%

560Ti @900 / 2500K @4.5 / 1920x1080 / Maxed:

Definitely gets choppy when a ton of particles are present (after a bullymog fight with broken ice everywhere), the cloth physics are excellent though. Otherwise a stable 60fps.

I'll do a FRAPS run tomorrow.

The game, when launched, reboots my brother's computer right away. Windows error report says Bus/Interconnect error.

I'm stuck in a .NET repair loop too. If I tell it to not restart I can play Borderlands 2 just fine. but it will keep repairing the install when I run Borderlands 2, even after rebooting. Gonna try fully uninstalling .NET 4

Go into your bl2 folder and rename the redist folder.

Got a little further in the game where some of the Physx effects started showing up. I capped my FPS at 72, everything max @ 2560x1600, Physx High and when chaos started erupting on screen performance was very smooth, no dip below 60fps at anytime.

Just a tip for those with AMD cards wanting this: Make sure you google 'PhysX installer' and grab it from Nvidias site. Changing the game settings doesn't seem to work for everyone alone.
Wait, AMD cards can run PhysX on Borderlands 2? Does it murder the framerate?

I got to part with a bunch of PhysX stuff on screen and it indeed made me bit below 60 FPS on my 690GTX. Kind of of a bummer, but I don't think any physX enabled game runs at a solid 60 once the heavy stuff starts coming in. :/

What resolution are you playing at? I had Fraps running and it never dropped below 60 for me and I'm on a 690 as well. I do have it slightly overclocked though.

I am having a bad time aiming at enemies in this game. I've been playing lots of Black Mesa recently, and the reticule in this game is obviously suited for consoles. Maybe it should just play it with a controller and BPM.

Edit: Not really PC performance question, so I asked this on the OT.

It shouldn't dip below 60 I wouldn't think. Before I capped my fps I was around 130fps and I'm at 2560x1600..i wouldn't think it would be an issue at 1920x1080.

It's this god awful GPU boost thing. GPUs are sitting at 950mhz when the frames drop. Don't think my CPU is a bottleneck... i5-2500k @ 4.7GHZ.

How on earth did Nvidia think it was a good idea to drop clocks while playing games? It's good for desktop browsing... but the thing should never downclock mid-game.

Anyone unlocked from the UK and had any trouble? Never VPN unlocked a game, scared.

I haven't had any trouble.

You will have to keep the VPN on and restart Steam to get it to work until Friday, though. Achievements still show up in Steam even when you don't have VPN on, but you won't be able to play it.

i've been playing for the past 2 hours

run steam then close it
start a vpn app up (i used spotflux)
launch steam and it should go to the US store, a download should start and it will slowly unpack borderlands 2

once its done click play and close the vpn app so you can play online lag free - if you close steam or the game and come back it will just say pre-load again, so gonna have to leave it running or do the whole thing over again

Controller is great with BL2 so far.
Tried both and chose controller because I never cared for BL with mouse.
The aiming is pretty spot on and, yeah, Black Mesa's movement and control kind of spoil you. Amazing but not all games have that great sense of control.

Back on topic, I play 1080p with in-game FXAA (pretty good, even though I usually dislike FXAA in favor of SMAA) and physx on high. Everything else maxed as well and so far non-stop 60 fps with my GTX 580. only about 40 minutes in, though, so considering what others have said it should get lower.

Hopefully, if Gearbox doesn't, someone will mod or workaround som Local multiplayer. I like playing with pals online, but playing with pals next to you is better. Can't LAN cross-state.

Thank you :). Will do it!

Yeah it's pretty annoying. I have the power target on my 690 set at 135% and it seems to hold the boosts longer, although the card gets hotter. I also ran FRAPS for 20-25 minutes during playtime and it shows that I was averaging 90fps. Although my the GPU usage was weird...GPU1 was at like 70% and GPU2 was around 90% or so..

That 90% is probably because of physx. Unless your using gpu1 as your physx, then that is weird.

Sounds good, I have a 6970 and a 2600k @ 4.4 so I'm happy with this. Are you running at 1080p and which drivers are you using?
