Just saw this bump didn't know there was a thread on this. Can someone help me think of a list of jobs that are basically at least 9-10$ an hour and offer part time (20 hours per week)? I'm unemployed now and will start listing a bunch of stuff and start applying, I'll be able to survive on that much. I'm not sure where I should start because I don't know what jobs pay more, which ones require degrees, the likelihood of getting them etc.

I'm 23 and have no degree (really sucks but I'm going to school next semester which is why I want part time not full), for the last 5 years I worked in an office full time doing IT stuff fixing computers both software/hardware, answering calls taking messages, doing spreadsheets that sort of thing but it's all from stuff I've learned since I was a kid on my own I never went to college for anything. And I got the job because I knew someone. I have no other connections.

I still have never done a job interview or have had to make a resume and am pretty nervous about that but not too much since everyone has to do it. Do you think I'll have a hard time finding jobs like that? Basically stuff like waiter, movie theater, office stuff on craigslist or something? My other potential problem besides only having HS degree is I have long hair =/ It's like Jon Snow from Game of Thrones and I don't know how that's going to fly with people. I really don't want to cut it off but am not sure if I'll have a choice. I live in NYC btw. Would be very much appreciated if someone could help me out, thanks.

Haven't posted in a while so I'll update.

I've had three promising interviews in the last month, two for the same position. In fact, my second was just yesterday. It didn't begin well. I failed to shake his hand firmly, to which he promptly said "Shake it firmly". I felt embarrassed.

What the hell?

A comment like that is already a bad start. Would throw me off my comfort zone entirely.

Maybe ask if you can do part time at your previous job?

I mean why go from doing the office IT stuff to be a waiter or movie theater? However waiters does have a chance of making decent money.

I was laid off, but there isn't any part time available there anyway. The travel was also killing me as it was deep into Brooklyn and I lived in the Bronx, it took an hour and 45 minutes to get there by train. I don't think I can afford to waste 3-4 hours per day just on travel while going to school, I would much prefer it to be in the Bronx or Manhattan. I don't know how I lasted 5 years doing that without looking for another job but I didn't want to leave my comfort zone so it is what it is.

Have you been at that school before, or will it be your first semester?

Most schools have sites for local employers to post part-time jobs. I got my first office assistant job that way working only 12 hours a week, and I held onto that job (more or less) for four years.

This is wrong. You HAVE to follow up, It shows determination and more than a passing interest. Sitting around waiting for a call is why a lot of people are unemployed.

I disagree. As an interviewer/hiring manager, I don't want to be bothered by people. If we have a position to fill, we will contact the best people to arrange second interviews and then make an offer.

i agree with this.

People always say call them back to show that you really want the job, and to let them know you are still interested, but i find that itll be bothersome.

If you were their first choice, you'd know it.

While this is usually the case, its doesn't hurt the seeker to try.

Nobody is going to lose a job because they followed up.

Hiring sucks, its really hard to find the perfect candidate. Hiring tasks are easily my least favorite things to do at work. So when you can get you hands on a good one, the fellow would have to do something pretty bad to eff it up. (This is also why you should always ask for at least 5 percent more than they're offering. 5 percent is not going to make them not hire who they want.)

Been unemployed for 4 months now. Not as long as some people, but it sure feels like too long already. It just seems to be a never-ending depressing experience, especially taking everything into account regarding how I've yet to even come close to getting anywhere in the job process (keep getting screwed by phone screens or art tests), and then the sobering thought that for every job I'm applying to, there's likely 100 other people applying for the same job.

It's looking more and more likely that I clearly screwed myself over by going into the wrong field, even though it was something I liked, but what good is that if you can't make any money at all?

This is the cover letter that worked for me. It merely caught their attention and curiousity, but that is worth a lot when they are going through countless of identical CV's

Well, I was fired because the owner didn't like Asians. He didn't know my supervisor hired one, which was me.

Literally 4 days there and because of who I am I'm fired. I'm tired of being unemployed.

....That sounds like a very easy lawsuit to win.

While I admire your candor, I can't help but read such forthcoming things in a thread about a job search and juxtapose it against the rampant bullshit hiring managers and the system in general expect interviewees to spout in response to all the banal, pointless questions you ask us. If "PEEPLE SKILLZ" are are valued in an employee, "I don't want to be bothered by people" is a phrase that you should probably never utter.

I am now unemployed! Left working for a major health insurance company (liked the people, job was anywhere from eh to dislike) to work at a transmission plant. One month into it, I get my first kidney stones. Considering it was impossible to either A)work 12 hour shifts while in crazy pain or B) work 12 hour shifts while operating large, dangerous machinery while in moderate paid on Vicodin, I didn't really have much say. It was something I even had to go to the hospital for.

Then, a week after I passed it, I either got some super bug or food poisoning, but I was running a fever, sweating, nauseous, explosive diarrhea, and on my way to work (yes, I tried) vomited in my car, all over myself. This was followed, shamelessly, by a shart. Needless to say, I turned around, and called in. I called the doctor and they prescribed something for the nausea, suggested something over the counter for the diarrhea, and the usual drink plenty of fluids.

The whole two week period this is going on.... my wife was in the hospital the entire time.

Since I was in the 90 days, they let me go. Since it was absence related and in 90 days, I believe my chances of help through unemployment are somewhere between 0-.01% Couldn't help it though, wasn't like I was calling off to sip margaritas.

So yeah, everything is turning up TheApatheticOne. Worst two weeks of my life, a goofy amount of bills are on their way, Im without job, and nothing and no help on the horizon. At least my wife is out and okay.

Also, just for shits and giggles, my brother texts my sister and says I passed up on a golden opportunity and just want to stay at home and play XBox. Which is amazing due to:
A) In the last 5 years at my old job, I worked an average of just over 50 hours a week.
B) The job I lost was a good job, better than the one I had, but was no "golden opporunity".
C) Im the video game nut in my family and extended family. And by nut, put 3-4 hours total in a week. I obviously need an intervention. And the kicker.... my brother plays 2 hours a night.... EVERY DAY.

But yeah, all in all.... : (

Unemployment rate is so low! How are all of you unemployed?!

I've gotten calls from two headhunters in the last month as well as a call from a recruiter at a prospective employer. Plus, a recruiter at my company IM'ed me today to see if I would be interested in a role someone recommended me for. All of this without applying to any position. Seems like there are A LOT of jobs out there. Maybe you all are just unqualified?

There are, and you're right; the qualifications around just don't seem to match the qualifications needed. Or, the qualifications required for some jobs are just plain ludicrous and out of whack (see above, re: entry-level jobs somehow requiring 3-5 years experience, and being awarded to people who lost jobs elsewhere and have that experience, instead of hard-working, energetic new graduates who really need the experience).

Just got an interview with a local supermarket. I am really looking forward to this, but I am also nervous as this is my first job that required an interview. Any tips for me? I know I can just google some but I would like some sound advice instead of yahoo answers.

Be positive. Don't look down when you talk: look at them in the face or around their face if you don't like eye contact. Be clear and don't mumble. Don't be afraid to take a few seconds to respond to a question.

I'm currently still in school so I'm not hurting for a job, but I'm probably going to go back to my old Subway gig since that's about all that's open to me right now. At the rate I'm going, I might be better of just dropping out of college and taking any job I can get because I have no idea what I'm going to do career-wise in this market. I'm taking way too long to get through school and it's getting to the point where it's not worth it, but I'm not really qualified to do anything, so fast food/other minimum wage shit is all that's open to me.

So I'm not in too bad of situation right now, but if I ever stop going to school I'm going to be fucked.

Had a couple of interviews for this job. It was down to just two candidates, one of who was me. I was told I'd get a response by the end of last week or this Monday the latest. It was only Today where I did get a call but not what I was expecting. More frustrating than a rejection, the company have suspended their hiring campaign for now. No estimation for when a decision would be made was given other than that they would revisit the candidates to see if they were still interesting, which suggests this could be several weeks or even months.

Baffling that such an abrupt decision would be made so late. Quite annoying as well. I suppose they want to reassess what vacancies they can offer. Something must have happened recently

So I may be voluntarily joining your ranks, at the rate I'm going. I've been trying to find a way to be content with this place for about a year now, and not only has nothing worked but everything's getting worse. The physical environment is terrible, I routinely spend all day without saying a single word to anyone, and my work is now demonstrably meaningless (they're moving our codebase to Java in a year or so). And now that my manager's on maternity I have to deal with the department head, who is as Lumbergh as Lumberghs get.

And the annoying part is that everyone's apparently content. They chose programming away in near-total darkness, they prefer the deathly silence (many don't even have headphones on). And every day of this is just driving me mad.

I don't care that I don't have interviews lined up (despite applying to places and actually having a couple of leads). I don't even really want interviews, I don't want to program anymore. I just wanna get through a day without hating everything.

I have What Color is Your Parachute arriving tonight, I don't know how much insight that could provide but I'm desperate for an actual improvement. I've been looking at damn near anything that seems feasible (shit, I've looked at car sales), but I still don't have any real direction.

</rant>

(And I acknowledge that ranting about a job I actually have is kinda mean to the unemployed, but I maintain the only reason I'm not unemployed already is that it's impossible to get fired here in the first place.)

Got another temp job coming up.

They called me pretty late, but it's starting on Thursday. Data entry/Excel job with some internet research thrown in. Not sure how well I do, especially since I'm not the best with Excel, but hey, it lasts until around October 12.

night shifts are brutal...can't study at all during the day. I hope I get good marks in calculus and advance functions, exams are coming up soon!

Because my online applications with cover letter + resume aren't garnering any responses, I'm going to start mailing out my applications to make them stand out a bit more. The only problem is, information on where to send it is seemingly secretive since corporate offices don't want mailed applications any more.

My question:
Once I find the corporate office address I want to mail a job application to, to whom do I address the letter to? I'm guessing HR since they are the ones that mostly deal with new hires, but I just don't know...

I have hair up to my neck, for student job interviews (hourly wage stuff) should I put it in a neat ponytail? I would like to do ponytail but I don't know if that's less professional or not. It would look odd with a dress shirt/pants but is it better than letting it out?

I don't think that is going to increase your odds. HR is still going to scan it and put it into the system electronically. As an interviewer, I never see the cover letter. Only the resume.

If you want to increase your odds of getting the job, I would suggest getting a good haircut and having it cut short.

I don't want to cut it and wouldn't know what style I would want even if I did, I know nothing about how to make long hair look good since it's the first time I've kept it like this. I'd rather keep looking for jobs than cut it, so if there were only 2 options leaving it out or ponytail would ponytail be okay? I mean would it be considered worse or better?

A ponytail would look more professional. Keep it out of your face and make sure it doesn't look greasy cause that's just gross.

You're a bad persion, and you should feel bad. I know it's election season, but keep this nonsense trolling out of this thread. Definitely not needed.

Sucks, but that's just part of job hunting. Just have to keep at it.

When I was job hunting, I had a couple interviews with a great company (1 with the recruiter, 1 with the dept manager)....great interviews...best I had. Then nothing. I called and emailed, no response. They called me back a couple months later to tell me that all hiring was suspended until their merger was completed. It happens.

I don't care that I don't have interviews lined up (despite applying to places and actually having a couple of leads). I don't even really want interviews, I don't want to program anymore. I just wanna get through a day without hating everything.

Don't do it. Some income is better than no income. More experience you have on your resume, the better. Your working conditions could be A LOT worse. Make plans with your friends and/or BF so that you get the social interaction you need. Be proactive about that.

But yes, keep job hunting, and something will come up. And maybe learn Java if that's what your company is moving to (maybe they'll pay for you to learn Java. Ask!). Again, more experience, the better.

Wasted effort, IMO. I know, it sucks. Sucks real bad. But you have to keep trying. Tailor your resume and CV to each application to increase your odds of standing out.

That's what I hated the most when I was job hunting. Dealing with company recruiters, sending out applications for jobs I was sorta-qualified for (but still within my field, and stuff I could learn), and then nothing.

Gaf, did I just get scammed out of my data by an agency?

I responded to a job ad last night, which was handled by "Travail Employment". Today they called me offering two immediately starting vacancies at separate places, pending a talk and registration like at any other place. So three hours later I registered and signed the contract...but these vacancies are now on hold! I'm desperate enough for them to use my CV for god knows what as long as I have work, but have they fooled me? :(

If I didn't have my bf I don't know what I'd be doing to myself...

Wait, wait. Can someone clarify this as well? I've also heard things like that from friends but I didn't know that they were serious about it.
I believe it, I really do.

What friends? What boyfriend?

And knowing that it could be worse is making it worse. It's diluting that desire to act. I've grown up so risk-adverse that I can't actually do something about a shitty situation until it's abhorrently shitty and knowing that just makes me angrier and more frustrated.

And the whole Java thing is a non-issue. I started college with Java, and the stuff I do now is C# so it's largely the same. But it doesn't matter. Nothing about this fucking job matters.

Started at my new job (temporary till the end of the year), and honestly, while the job could go permanent, I was hoping for some real growth in the company, because I don't want to be doing call center stuff for an extended period of time, but the staffing agency seemed confident that it would lead to growth. And maybe that's true, but looking at the charts, it seemed like it would take 2-3 promotions to get to somewhere to get somewhere moderately ideal, so it would be quite a while. Kinda bummed me out to be honest, but I suppose I have to be happy that I actually have something to do. The problem is that I feel like I wasted my degree if this is what I'm doing and I want to eventually get back to utilizing some of it in the relative future (next year or two).

Well I think I am going to be entering the ranks here pretty soon. I started a job right out college. The pay is good, but I really dislike the actual job. We had a decent supervisor until he recently got promoted. Now there is a new boss who is very different and hostile right from the start. Also my buddy there is leaving the department so it's kind of a double whammy.

I have been going through some health issues that are known at work and I feel like this is as a good a time as any to leave on amicable terms before things escalate.

Getting stressed about this screening assessment tomorrow morning.

It''s 8 hours, they look at fitness (I'm not fit), I'm not really sure if you get paid, pretty sure you don't find out that day if you're hired.

I got to choose between two jobs, one quite near at a town, one really far away so that I would have to get an own apartment in no man's land basically. There are positive and negative things on both sides and even though I already told the one at the near place that I wanted to work there I still wonder if this choice was the right choice, especially since there are positive and negative things on both jobs and I currently like to see just the positive things on the other job.
It doesn't help that an offer for a car turned out to be completely different (1200€ more than actually thought, ~600€ too much) and it would be definitely good if I get a car for next monday.
It actually makes me sick, physically and psychically.Life sucks.

What was your old job and what is your level of education?

I recently completed a masters degree in Post Production Editing and before that worked in... a supermarket (for a couple of years)! There are plenty of editing jobs but they're all in London (I'm in the UK) and I simply have nothing left in my bank account. Combine that with debt I have to repay and I'm not getting out of this situation for some time.
