Resident Evil 6 - Review Thread | Activist Reviews and the Hate Patrol Destroy Truth™

what has happened here:

- anti-japanese sentiment has reached a tipping point in western press
- capcom are an acceptable developer to criticise due to their mixed business practices
- the game is bloated and excessive, but it's also difficult and has a steep learning curve

consequently, re6 becomes the perfect target to;

a. prove journalistic integrity by tearing down an AAA title
b. slaughter a hugely popular japanese brand with a sound 'motive'

reality: re6 still contains more imagination and innovation than most (if not all) AAA western games.
I hope this is real

While I am not on board with there being some anti-Japanese games agenda, I do agree with this much. A popular game gets great reviews, then the mainstream gaming media is a joke, but if a popular game gets crucified, then they are all of the sudden saviors and are being fair and accurate, lol. But to their credit, this game does have obvious flaws, yet I still don't think it is 3/10 bad. That is broken game territory and this game is not broken, despite it's quirks and bad camera.

And yet if games media hands out high scores to "AAA" games they're "paid off" or "have bad taste", but if they give Resident Evil 6 a bad score they're... also paid off or have bad taste. My head hurts.

i'm not suggesting conspiracy theory, that's sensationalism. but it's naive to believe that reviews can't be laced with ulterior motives or sentiments that the writer wants to get across. as a critic you have the ability to influence people, sometimes people do this dishonestly. that's what i'm saying.

racism exists in film criticism, by the way. it's not exactly an alarming concept.

Are you suggesting that anyone who doesn't like RE6 has "ulterior motives" or racist sentiments they want to get across? Because that's frankly bullshit, and kind of offensive.

Ho ho ho. Just because I have a Resi avatar means I can't make valid arguments, right?

No, but it certainly makes any commentary about bias a bit questionable.

I predict they will like it even less. If memory serves it was Brad and Vinny who appreciated RE5 the most.

Yeah, I'll take Brad's opinion a bit more seriously. Dude constantly went on and on about how much he loved RE5 ...mostly for the same reasons I did as well. (great gameplay, replayability, etc.)

Final Fantasy and Resident Evil were victim of design-by-committee philosophies, as long as Kojima is directing I don't think Metal Gear will fall into that trap.

besides Metal Gear's already had *two* episodes of immense fan backlash anyway

Well as soon as Kojima somehow escapes, it's all fucked. Just like when Matsuno/The Gooch and Mikami left.

I don't get the gamespot review, there's barely a mention in the gameplay department. It's all:"ugh, scripted shit", that I might agree but doesn't tell me if it's a good game or not.

Going by that review it seems that COD is the worst saga ever then.

And I'm well aware of all the problems the demo had, but it isn't even mentioned, like the camera or the loose controls...

Fine, I'll download it now.

The thing that blew my mind about the demo was that when I pointed straight at a wall my laser sight wiggled around like a professor trying to circle something on a projector screen across the room with a laser pen.

Worth a play through though. I disliked it.

Don't worry guys there's always Tangos/Mikamis' upcoming survival horror title to repair some of that lost soul from the series!

A score under 5 says to me a game is fundamentally broken and with few redeeming qualities. RE6 might be uneven, silly and at times frustrating but it's still a hugely enjoyable game.

I don't like how anyone with an even remotely positive opinion is being dismissed by people who haven't played it.

One of my favourite bosses in the entire series. Really well done.

No they didn't.

In most instances they do, though. Many games that are multiplatform tend to be, so I think the practice is to assume they're similar. Of course, this is Bethesda, so everything they put out should be analyzed and tallied individually for the amount of bugs and issues. I think they know that, now. :P

A website or publication that reviews any product without actually testing it is falling at the most basic hurdle of professionalism.

You know what means member war? Stay quiet, please.

Whatever. People that read your posts on the other thread know perfectly why you're enjoying this. based on playing the demo. Just searching in that thread with your name as the author totally explains what i'm talking about.

Everything you said could very well be true. But you can't prove it, so it's not helpful to the discussion, especially in light of the fact that the game clearly has flaws. Some people are going to be particularly annoyed by those flaws and judge it to be a bad game on its actual merits. No need to posit a complex confluence of factors as the primary explanation, though they may very well have something to do with it.

okay, fair enough.

I'm being pretty snarky, but honestly this makes me super sad. Capcom is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite publisher ever and I want to see them succeed. I've loved the Resi series for years and to see the direction it's been headed in makes me almost as sad as when I think about the mainline Final Fantasy series right now.

I'm not one of these people who says that we're living in the end-times of Japanese game development, but this certainly doesn't bode well for Capcom themselves. They need to stop trying to figure out what they think Americans want and just make games like they used to.

That said, Capcom certainly has created some fine games in the last few years. It's just that these giant beasts they've been creating that always seem to get panned.

Game is getting owned in reviews, holy shit. Not that surprised because I think it looked very disappointing but I guess still... weird to see such a big game get those scores.

I remember yesterday in the OT, when I claimed this game has terrible broken mechanic, generic/bland design from demo, I was literally covered of insults first because the demo wasn't enough explicit, than about my bad english & so on.

That happened only a few times, and they managed to make each one seem interesting with a twist in how the area was laid out and what enemy types were there. It was almost like a puzzle. Each area, enemy encounter, or boss fight was hand-crafted to perfection.

In RE5 enemies just sort of came at you and it all sort of blended together based on what chapter you were in. It wasn't a bad game, but it was a somewhat bland one, especially in single player.

I'm not seeing what you're seeing, but to each his own. To me RE4 and RE5's enemy encounters and areas were very similar in design. The only difference is that it was fresh in RE4, and not fresh in RE5. As I said before, I prefer RE5 because it decided to ditch the puzzles for the most part, and I felt the prevalence of "kill everyone to leave" rooms was reduced a bit, or, RE5 was shorter, so I didn't get tired of the "kill everyone to leave" rooms like I did in RE4.

Too bad it plays like complete shit.
