Resident Evil 6 - Review Thread | Activist Reviews and the Hate Patrol Destroy Truth™

You mean like in the demo with Leon?...seems like those are avaliable as sooner as you fight an enemy. The quote is implying those movements are contextual every moment in the gameplay, which is just a lie...

Edit: I'm assuming of pressing L1 + X which is crouching/quick ducking...I can't imagine what else he's meaning

See my edit above for clarification. I think they're talking about the contextual button prompt stuff related to the environment, like jumping over a gap or crouching behind cover. You can't jump or crouch on a whim. You can however dodge roll and quick-duck whenever you want.

Still in the midst of playing through the game (it is so. fucking. long.) but the review will be up as soon as possible.

If you had to weigh which area of the game is failing the most, would you say it is how you control the character or the stuff the game throws at you?

I have the game and I've honestly been loving it so far.

So what if it got bad reviews? You shouldn't put that much stake on reviews. If you want to play it just play it, whether you're paying 60 bucks, getting it used, trying it out at a buddies place, etc.

Yeah, 3/10 sounds like: don't buy this unless you're sad if the company goes bankrupt, because barely anyone will buy it or play it. Then again, I've seen many unfair scores (normally not on established franchises). Outbreak file 2 sits there with a 58 metacritic. Did that deter my enjoyment at all? No.

I agree that the scoring is a mess, but that a different issue than if someone enjoyed or hated the game. The scoring does seem inconsistent as we have become accustomed to anything sub 5 practically being broken and from what I have played and read, this game is not. Also some places scored the same as ORC which it is possible that the reviewer believes that ORC and RE6 are equal but still hard to believe as the score indicates. But again thats just the weirdness of video game scoring, what really matters are the words being said in the reviews.

The reviews seems slightly lower than what RE5 was getting, yet people are reacting like a nuke just went off.

It's quite crazy the direction this thread is going:
People saying they are happy about low scores.
People defending a game they haven't played.
Reviewers being praised or crucified based on scores they gave other games in the past...no matter what genre.

I never knew there was this much passion for Resident Evil on gaf, it never seems be talked about at all. Who knew?

All I want to know is which version is better, 360 or PS3? I tried reading a review to find out, but game journalists are so bad nowadays they don't know how to talk about the technical details of a game....and instead review the story to great extent instead and then gloss over the actual mechanics working the game.
It's not jut slightly lower, it's significantly lower.

many of the people defending the game here actually played the full game. including me.

Yeah, but isn't that like in....a lot of games?...I was assuming he was talking form the gameplay actual moves...so the review is even more worthless than I thought.

They just re-added it again. It was down.

This one is from Shane Satterfield IIRC. I think he said he reviewed it on Invisible Walls.

Gonna enjoy this weeks podcasts, Shane defending the game on IW, Cannata on Weekend Confirmed and Giant Bomb bashing.

Didn't you hate Shattered Memories?

I said that in the post you were replying to!

Oh okay, people need to "allow themselves to look past flaws."

That's a funny new phrase for self-delusion, but all right.

Every game has flaws—if you don't do some level of looking past them, then every game can end up a bitch fest. And my point was that typically, the games we have the most fun with are the ones where we know there are flaws, we accept them, but then we don't let those flaws taint the fun that we'd otherwise have.

Edit: Better than Resident Evil 4 Shidoshi? That's lofty praise.

I think it's a better Resident Evil. In terms of actual games, that's a really tough question.

I still don't see why people call REv a great game. It has all the problems 6 seems to have with it's bloated, inconsistant campaign, abhorrent writting and dialog, 'streamlined' gameplay, bad bosses, and some absolutely terrible pacing.

Because that's exactly what Resident Evil was before RE4.

on the last page. Can't blame him if the game is just 20 more hours of the demo.

Posts in the OT make it sound like there's a crazy amount of variety, but the controls remain the same. I didn't have any trouble with the controls in the demo, but I did switch to the laser sight and adjust the camera settings.

I'm revisiting RE5 right now, playing LAN co-op Veteran mode on PC instead of split screen Normal mode 360.

It's... a very good game. What the hell? Sure, there's a lame segment or two, but this is not the game many on the internet say it is.

the rest of the negative reviews are kind of the same. keywords like: identity, series roots.

Gross.

I'd like to see more of the issues brought up by the negative reviews, but I really can't risk anything spoiler-wise.

what has happened here:

- anti-japanese sentiment has reached a tipping point in western press
- capcom are an acceptable developer to criticise due to their mixed business practices
- the game is bloated and excessive, but it's also difficult and has a steep learning curve

consequently, re6 becomes the perfect target to;

a. prove journalistic integrity by tearing down an AAA title
b. slaughter a hugely popular japanese brand with a sound 'motive'

reality: re6 still contains more imagination and innovation than most (if not all) AAA western games.

Dude, no, just no.

From where are people getting this crazy anti-Japanese sentiment? These are the same people that reviewed Revelations a few months ago very well. They just decided to hate a game for being Japanese?

Too bad it plays like complete shit.

Huh? I think you're letting all the crazies get to you. The inventory system is sloppy, and the cover system is fucked. But, the rest of the controls--dodging, shooting, melee, sliding, etc.--are fine.

Still in the midst of playing through the game (it is so. fucking. long.) but the review will be up as soon as possible.
how is this man still not tagged? no mod has seen his awesome CoD 4 session on giant bombs live show? :/

No, your argument shows you can't make a valid argument.

Edit: Beaten.

All this cheek and you still haven't responded to my argument. But why would you when it's much easier to drop ad hominem attacks.

Like I already said, I don't care how this game reviews; I'm going to buy it and I'm going to play it. Whether it reviews in the 90s or the 50s doesn't affect me. However, people holding up these reviews as shining examples of journalistic integrity need to get their logic circuits checked because game journalists have been undermining their so-called integrity for years. One seething review isn't going to redeem them.

If anything, it was the biggest precursor to RE6.

Revelations was a decent game..not great, I agree. But bosses is something the game did very good, better than RE5 bosses.

Nails it. This thread would have been the complete opposite if the reviews were mostly positive. All the people saying haha at the conspiracy posts would have made their own conspiracy posts just saying the opposite.

Everyone is out to prove something rather than just letting opinions be.

look, i hope you haven't forgetten me in every other RE thread. I hope you haven't forgotten my defences of 5, or revelations, or well, you know. I find this conspiracy bullshit highly insulting.

I love this series, because traditionally, the games in it are good. A 'bad' RE was previously something really very good like RE5. And yet, the demos... man... I can't tell you how much they hurt. I tried pretty hard to like them, to remain optimistic after them, but I couldn't. I'm not going to DX: invisible war myself again and trick myself into thinking a shit demo was anything but, and end up buying a shit game I still regret buying more than any other game.

You know I love this series. You know I truly love this series. I'm replaying zero on and off with a friend of mine at the moment and we're going to move right on to REmake and 2 and 3 and you get the idea. This mess of a game... it's not worthy of the name. There's probably $60 worth of good content amongst the huge heap of content... but... it doesn't live up to the name.

Call this game something else. Say its from a western developer, and it doesn't magically start getting better reviews than it's getting now. It just doesn't.

When I eventually pick it up (because I will) I really hope I love it, but the issues are there whether they bother you or not. Is it that hard to understand that for some the issues get in the way of their enjoyment of the good stuff so much so that they can't enjoy the good stuff at all?

Gonna enjoy this weeks podcasts, Shane defending the game on IW, Cannata on Weekend Confirmed and Giant Bomb bashing.

Sounds like fun in the endurance sense. What's going to be the real challenge is enduring the larger conclusions they draw from it. Lots of "Japanese not getting it" I assume. In any case, I firmly believe this game has differentiate itself enough to deserved to be called a "japanese thing", not a "western" knock-off.

Cool that you liked it. I've always thought of it as at least good and my opinion of it grew with replays.

Two worlds collide, rival nations
It's a primitive clash, venting years of frustrations
Bravely we hope against all hope, there is so much at stake
Seems our freedom's up against the ropes
Does the crowd understand?
Is it a East vs. West, or man against man
Can any nation stand alone?

First or late, I'll play it. But I hardly doubt my opinions will change. Demo is enough representative.
Really? 3 10 minute chapters are representative of a 30 hour campaign?

I'm thinking probably a mercenaries demo would have been much better. The demo of Re5 felt like a mercenaries moment (hell it was one of the mercenaries map), and it worked much better to represent the game than the pieces shown for resident evil 6.

When we said yesterday that one should keep an open mind, it means exactly that: wait until you have the full thing before jumping to conclusions. Maybe your opinion will still be the same, but that time your words will have a lot more of weight. But I have this feeling that you'll change your opinion, maybe only slightly, but enough to think "maybe I shouldn't have said all that back then" sometimes.

I heard the reviewes were pretty low but....not this low. :( They don't effect what I want to play but wow. I love me some RE. I might rent it atleast to give it a try.

That Gametrailers review did not vibe with the score at all.

The entire video review was 'mixed messages, mixed messages, mixed messages': 8.8!
