Resident Evil 6 - Review Thread | Activist Reviews and the Hate Patrol Destroy Truth™

Besides FFXIII and L.A.Noire (which I still enjoyed) I don't see a problem with a 39/40 for those games.

Would add GTA IV to the ones that don't belong there. Then I would agree. But that's the problem. Those 2 or 3 (or now 4?) games just don't belong there. I mean at all. They are not even near the class of those other games.

And then you got Demon's Souls at 29/40. And Nintendogs + Final Fantasy XIII-2 at 40/40. It's insane. It's like a curveball.

You know, I was getting kind of excited for RE6 after I played the demo a few times and finally tweaked it enough to get it to control more like RE4, but then I realized that I was getting excited because I made a game not broken so I stopped being excited. Most of the reviews point to deep issues beyond the controls just being whacky and strange, which is what I thought would be the main sticking point, so I'm glad I decided to wait for the classic Capcom price drop.

On a side note, I hope reviewers keep their collective spine for the next overhyped mediocre AAA game, and that this isn't just "it's cool to say what we really think but only if the game isn't a giant western developed game."

Honest and humble question fellow GAFfers:

Do you believe reviewers would not be so harsh if this was not a Resident Evil game? I mean, at this point some Games just use their names to grab the attention right? Many of them walked away from the starting formula.

I don't know if I made myself clear (sorry, today my english is a bit lazy GAF).

people in general seem to be very negative about resident evil. it doesn't help when the developer has a bad history of treating the series creator like complete shit, causing him (mikami) to speak out negatively about the direction the series has taken

what would happen if miyamoto started speaking negatively about new entries in the mario/zelda series?

that being said i refuse to believe this is a bad game

Well now I know what I'm getting my girlfriend for Christmas.

It really is perfect, isn't it? It's like the fanboy equivalent of 'entitled'. Only bummer is that it might be vaguely applicable in criticisms against reviewers that actually advocate some course of action beyond the review itself. Vaguely.

I demand every OT review list be titled Entitled Activist Reviews and have Tin Foil Hat Leon as its header from now on.

Western reviewers shat all over Dragon's Dogma, too.

Regardless of actual quality, I think there is a general anti-Capcom sentimentality in the western media. Either that or my tastes simply do not align with most of them since Dragon's Dogma is one of my favorite games of this generation.

Jeff trolling Brad is fantastic lol. (Mount and Blade hate though, that's a no no).

Seems like he is being frustrated, which is reassuring to me.

EDIT: .............they just found out how to roll and don't know how to get up immediately how to get up (don't hold aim). After 12 hours? Okay, that was just bad lol.

I will probably give it a shot. I actually prefere the action oriented resident evils compared to the first three. Though I still like them.

There simply isn't enough popcorn for these kind of posts.

They aren't as blatant and transparent about how favorable are for some games.

I just don't see much of a difference. Some bring up the increase in perfect scores that Famitsu has handed out this gen compared to previous years. But that pretty much goes for all review sites/mags. Edge has given out 9 perfect scores since 2007. They handed out 5 from 93-06.

Haven't really been following RE6.
Played the demo and enjoyed it somewhat despite the wonky controls.
Do you really have to equip the knife to use it?
Was hoping the game would get better scores.

I think it would be more harsh. At best the controls are different and therefore most reviewers would write the game off it weren't for the fact that RE5 already used an outdated control scheme. ie. Players have come to accept that RE has esoteric control schemes, no other franchise would get that benefit.

What I hate about reviewers:

Giving the game incredibly low scores just to be 'cool'. I am quite sure that the game isn't great or what anyone expected from a numbered Resident evil game.

But giving the game 3 or 4's, that means this game is one of the worst of this generation. Probably giving the game a score around 7 is gonna be the right score.

But off course some reviewers know that if they give it a low score they better give it a very low score, so that everyone on GAF and every other forum can discuss their review.

I don't mean to make it sound like I think there is some kind of conspiracy. I do think that a lot of people have become disenchanted with Capcom (perhaps for good reason). I mean just look at Giant Bomb and Asura's Wrath. You had comments along the lines of "This game had no business being any good!", "I can't believe I enjoyed it as much as I did!", etc. As if those who played it went into the game expecting it to be shit.

Goddamn. Jeff outright said people who like RE have bad taste, 4 included.

But Jeff doesn't like it and he just about the worst taste around! He's a hilarious guy, though.

Haven't played the game myself, so I can't comment on what I think of it, but you could totally see how they were just loving to hate on the game. They were making fun of every tiny thing, while none of it looked particularly bad to me.

I doubt it, somehow.

He's been peddling that crap for years, everyone just laughs it off now

Yes. But the knife isn't really necessary. You can break boxes and stuff with kicks. Only reason I ever really used them in RE5.

Tried the demo. Will play when I can get the PC version cheap. No interesting in diving in early.

Sounds like something I'll pick up eventually, but its a shame that the last two haven't been comparable to 4, plus the fact that the old style RE is probably gone for good.

Yes, I think something has changed between then and now. It's either Capcom and the quality of their games, or the mentality of the reviewers.

It's the former. Or at least in GB's case it is. Can't speak for anyone else, but I hear these guys talking games almost every day and they're honest to a tee.

It's why Jeff can shit on RE4 constantly and still be beloved

We have a term for this now, it's activist reviewing.

Jeez, you are just begging for lazy answers lol.

EDIT: I think Brad might be playing on a higher difficulty than normal here. Otherwise he is doing very, very poorly (I'm comparing that scenario to the ones in the demo). Either way I didn't see any smart tactics at play, like shoot to melee. His comment on killed right after being raised sounds like trouble, mainly with AI. Ideally if you are playing with another person they will deal with nearby enemies before picking you up (though heal spray deals with this).

It's the former.

Possibly? Personally I wasn't much of a fan of RE5 because of its co-op focus.

I didn't touch Lost Planet 2 for the same reason, but I think it was around this time that the general sentiment towards Capcom this generation went from "Capgod" to "Crapcom".

Then there was Dragon's Dogma, which I absolutely love, but the media jumped on like rabid dogs trying to one up each other with scathing reviews.

There's no way RE5 is a better game than RE6. And I like RE5, but at least is as flawed as RE6.

I think the Quick Look will be a treasure trove of those moments, hopefully with another "Let the record show" style classic.

Just out of curiosity, has Game Informer ever given a potential sales blockbuster anything lower than an 8 or 7?
