Leon's consisted of "scary" parts that weren't scary and ho hum action sequences. When the horror doesn't exist, you're just left with a middling campaign with no spectacle. At least Chris's pulls off set pieces and scripted events better, for what that's worth.

This is totally true as well. On the surface the game is a train wreck, but it actually has a lot of great stuff in it. Not many have the patience for it though, and when the game is targeted as a mainstream co-op shooter it won't be suprising if the vast majority of people hate this game. I ended up being really glad of my purchase, others will be snapping their disks and posting the photos online, others again will just think it's meh.

My point is, conspiracy theories in -either- direction are bullshit. Print is not being paid off, and websites are not spouting negativity for hits. My point was you could invert your suggestion in the opposite direction and it comes off just as "sound."

Which speaks to the larger problem in this thread: This huge suspicion of ulterior motives, on either side of the debate. I think it might be more fruitful to accept the negative reviewers were sincere, and the positive reviews likewise, but then also to consider that many of our very own Gaffers grew to like the demo after learning the mechanics and adjusting to what the game was rather than what it wasn't.

And it wasn't a matter of forcing ourselves to like it out of some misplaced hype for the game. In fact, in my case, my first demo run had me thinking, "Meh, I'll skip this for Dishonored or XCOM" (which I still plan to buy), but on a whim I tried the demo again and, expectations greatly lowered, and settings adjusted, it clicked. It won't work that way for everyone, but the potential is there, absolutely.

Mechanically, RE6 has a functional foundation -- a fun one, even. The pacing might not be "right" the first time, but once learned, it works well, as a second run through the demo showed. It really seems like the main drawback are the QTEs, which also alienate in how they represent something we generally loathe in game design.

I agree with you for the most part, but there are some dodgy cases. I mean, OPM US comes out with a Resi 6 review over a week ago giving it a 9/10. Really? Whether that's what they thought or not it's just not a good look. "Oh, only this place can review our game 7-10 days before the embargo." As if they're going to give them a 5/10.
 
ok , this in only tangentially related tbh but at the 10 min mark these guys openly just state that famitsu reviews are dodgy as f*ck.

Many people in the OT say Chris has the best campaign, especially after the first two chapters(which are what both of his demos are from).

Because it's a game made out of quicktime events, not because it's Japanese or made by Capcom.

Either way, I am still seeing a lot of 8+ reviews rolling in for both versions. My point is that it is still getting some good-great reviews. Should every single one of those just be automatically thrown out and disregarded, while only the negative ones are given any credence?

360 version had 32 reviews on it vs 14 on PS3, that's gives a better picture of how things will end up on metacritic once they add all the reviews. don't get excited over that...

Do any of the reviews comment on PS3 performance? I remember we had an early review claim superior visuals and performance on the triple; many were speculating they meant it the other way around.

maybe because i was a former developer i find things like gaming press making blood and fun of the work of others something of bad taste

its fine to review a game and show its flaws,but sometimes they do that with a total lack of respect for the people who worked hard to bring the game to the people.

And his funny how the same journos get hiperdefensive when someone on the gaming press got mocked or get some flak.
 
The problem I'm having with this game so far (I've finished two of the campaigns) is mostly how the game feels like several different design directions all fighting for attention - I imagine that's partly why the game has so many campaigns in the first place. For example, I feel like the action-packed setpieces and QTEs don't fit with Leon's stuff - meanwhile, the tiny corridors and segmentation of the "co-op doors" really hampers the pace in Chris's stuff, and the stop-and-pop TPS gameplay just isn't well tuned enough to compete with a Vanquish or a Gears or even a Binary Domain.

It just feels stiff and clunky, and not in a methodical way - things like the way characters sort of speed up and slow down within their movement cycle to emulate real footsteps just feels off in Chris's segments, which otherwise seems geared to rewarding players for moving and shooting, another thing the cover system is sort of counter-productive towards - the game really rewards you for getting in close for melee, so why bother with cover?

I'm finishing the game and hopefully my review today. I definitely don't hate the game, and I'm certainly not going to knock it for having a dumb story - Resident Evil thrives on dumb schlock and I love that - but I don't think it's very good, either. There's no deep-seated hatred for Japan within me, I assure y'all.

Yep, 15 positive reviews, 14 mixed and only 3 negative. Does not sound so bad when looked at that way. The game certainly has it's flaws, but it is not 3/10 bad, lol. That is all I am getting at here.

because Dark Souls actually shows forethought when using design to convey how to use these mechanics. RE6 has me entering a stumble animation when I walk over zombies I can't see because its too dark and the camera is stuck to my ass.

Yup, his camera is better, gameplay seems tuned better, etc. Brad seems to find it boring because he's "playing it wrong". It favours stylish/skilled play like Vanquish. He's playing it like Gears, so will most people. I can't blame most people for that, it really is Capcom's failing (like the rest of the game), but Brad reviews games for a living.

In this very thread we have posts about Famitsu being paid off. I imply they might not be the only ones, and that's now a conspiracy theory? Come on, we all know how the European print press works. I don't see why they never get the same shit Famitsu does.

As the guy in the green shirt states, it's a pretty well-known fact within the industry.

I'm not sure if you just thought people were joking or exaggerating or something when people talk about the lack of credibility with Famitsu, but they're not.
 
Well I didn't find the shooting at all "shitty" in the demo; I had no trouble hitting what I was aiming it. But comparing RE 6 to those games was just a joke since those are the two games that sprang to mind when I read "game made out of quick time events" and as it happened he reviewed both of them.

[EDIT] Oh, he was talking about Asura's Wrath all along. Silly me.

Reviews can be fun to watch, but I don't always agree with them. Some say Call of Duty is awesome. Do I think it is? Not really. Everybody can play that game.

I'm not saying he's right or wrong in his assertion at all. I played the demo with a friend and while I thought there were some annoying nitpicks with Leon's chapter, I was somewhat enjoying the attempt at a tense and moody atmosphere. I felt the Chris segment was too all over the place and frantic for me to enjoy it. In my relation to Shoemaker's experience in that video, if Chris' episode fares better than Leon's, then from my experience that sure says a lot about Leon's campaign.

Whatever part Brad was playing in the video certainly looked more approachable than what I had experienced.
 
You know, I really thought 5 was the stiff-legged practice run for the masterpiece (far enough removed from the albatross that was Mikami) that 6 was destined to be.

Agreed: Shinji Mikami is a symbol of good luck, and his "death" was a curse upon Capcom.
