Wii U Next Big Steps.

Most game systems are branded by important milestones trough out their life cycles. Be it by games, hardware or busyness decisions that forge the device evolution path. For example, the Wii after the outstanding success that was Wii Sports took another breath of fresh air with had WiiFit. Then it came Wii Motion + to refine even more what was already a very inventive controller. MS had the Kinect which helped them solidify the 360 as America's best selling console for more than 22 consecutive months.

I was thinking we could let our imaginations run free and share what we think some of this significant forces might end up being.

Software:
-Thinking what Nintendo could come up in terms of a new IP, it occured to me that an all stars card fighting game might be in the company's plans. Nintendo has been very quite about the Wiiu Pad NFC. I could totally see Nintendo wanting to employ figurines but that idea has been already being used by activition. Giving the companies story cards using NFC are a good match. Maybe they'll do both a game and a phycial version of the card game.

HardWare:
-More than likely a WiiU Gamepad +. Better screens, longer battery life and maybe multi touch.

-Range boosters for the signal, so the full potential of gaming everywhere around the house could be realized.

-An stylus with a presure sensitive button and motion sensors. Think of it as Wiiremote stylus, so you can both use the touch screen and have extra input options. Great fit for a new Zelda game.

Went a lil crazy with speculations, what sort of things any of you could see making significant impact on the console?

All I want to see at this point are some more games announced for the thing.

Yes. I'm very impressed with the controller and a lot of the aspects of the system. But frankly what we need to hear right now are more 2013 titles.

As I understood from early adopter's impressions etc. the firmware/OS needs a lot of work and updates.

But I guess that's a given? And games. GAMES!

I have no idea how the fuck they can do it, but they need to try and convince people the Wii U shouldn't be compared to the Nextbox and PS4 when they launch next year. Other than that, Nintendo will continue to sell boatloads of 1st party software.

Nintendo 3rd party ports are going to be fucked. If the Wii U is having trouble porting current gen games, then when the Nextbox and PS4 come, they're boned for the most part. The future ports are going to look so fucking wretched in comparison...they basically will be entirely different games. With that said, Nintendo and 3rd party devs need to be smart, so you may actually see a lot of 3rd party exclusives that get ported to the other consoles much later on.

In terms of what I want...I'll buy the thing when the first real Mario, Zelda, Smash, or Metroid game comes out for it. Nintendo consoles almost will always catch me because of their exclusive software.

-More than likely a WiiU Gamepad +. Better screens, longer battery life and maybe multi touch.

Yeah....this wont happen.

Is multi-touch really that wanted? (3)DS isn't multi-touch, is it? They seem to be making cool stuff for those handhelds without it.

Its been out 2 days...
That's the point of the thread. With the console just released, anticipate what could be important turn arounds in the future.

Nintendo keeping silence about the next big games seems like one of the smarter moves they've recently made. Why? Because they'll sell all the stuck through out the hollydays anyways, so they keep the games as extra ammo for attention grabing publicity when they need it the most. The console's launch is enough "news" right now.

There's no way they're going to segment the market with a GamePad and a GamePad plus. You could get away with it with the Wii Remote because it was an inexpensive add-on, but you're not going to get many people wanting up buy another $100+ Game Pad just to enjoy a few games.

I guess just waiting for game announcements now.

Pretty much. It's insanely worrying to look at the 2013 release schedule for Wii U right now. I really hope Pikmin 3 wasn't pushed back because they have nothing else for early next year. 3rd party games outside the launch window need a big boost as well.

I can see there being a GamePad revision somewhere down the line.

But for now, lets have some weighty first party games please. A few new IPs wouldn't go amiss.

You're not getting Shonen Jump All Stars 2. Just get that out of your head.

In 6 months, we'll get Pikman 3, which will be the real standout display of what the WiiU can do. In 12 months, we'll get something from Sega's partners that they assisted on very closely that are outstanding. There is no doubt that Nintendo will create software that makes the WiiU look very good.

The question is, will anyone else?

Magic the Gathering would be fun on this thing, or at least easier to use.

What I really want is POKEMAN though.

Third party games are the next step--Nintendo needs to use whatever lead time they have on PS4/720 to build the Wii U base. Depending on how reticent third parties are, it might be wise for them to actually foot the bill or perform some ports themselves to build it up.

Also fix their fucking account strategy ASAP; creating a developer-friendly eShop is great, bt it should be consumer friendly too.

There are tons of things they should do within the first year, before the competition is out for blood. But the most important step is probably convincing japanese companies to release their (exclusive) games on it.

Short term stuff:

- Updates to the OS to make it faster.
- 3rd party games that are not half assed
- Exclusive titles that show what the system can do graphically

Nintendo has less than a year before we see what the competition is bringing. So far the Wii U isn't doing Nintendo any favors. It's the first Nintendo system in a long while that I did not jump on. Of course the 3DS soured me there.

That isn't going to happen, in the same way that a 3DS isn't going to come out with a higher resolution screen and a second analog stick; it would make it a whole new system.

Well, there are multi touch resistive screens. If the tech becomes cheaper in the next 2 years who knows? Plus, it would retaing 100% compability with all released games. But yea, chances are slim but it could be done.

There won't be any market segmentation. A better quality screen and better battery life as controller revision won't force anybody hand into buying the new gamepad. Not sugesting a Gamepad+ would have a higher res screen.

Yes, for any of those (MGS can't be a port) I'd buy a Wii U most likely. Also, I love U being the modern Super. It's so fucking dumb, I absolutely love it.

Software-wise Wii Fit U is still slated to come out before April. I think that's potentially pretty big. I also think Mario Kart is probably gonna be the Wii U's major fall 2013 game.

Hardware-wise, no idea. Maybe a smaller, cheaper version of the GamePad that can be sold separately for not-insane prices? I imagine it looking sort of like a Vita just without its own processor. Just my two cents.

There isn't a doubt in my mind that Nintendo will release an updated gamepad in the future with at the very least a capacitive touch screen (what you would find in modern tablets like the iPad) and better battery life.

People are already complaining about how crappy the touch screen is.

This. Miyamoto talked at least twice about cards when interviewed about the gamepad/NFC. This thread for the last interview, in French.

ego-quote with my translation of the interesting part:
To move on another subject, I think we have an interesting hint not yet highlighted about what could be one of the next project Miyamoto is working on. When talking about the NFC and how this technology enable new ways to interact with real stuff, he said >

My rough translation : "And you know, what's extremely successful on smartphone at the moment, at least in Japan, are cards collection games. But they're virtual cards. What interests me are the real cards. It's why I think the Wii U has more potential."

Sounds for me he's already on something and well, it's not like Nintendo doesn't know anything about card games...

I love the Wii U so far. And... I think Nintendoland is garbage.

What's next for Nintendo? Hopefully motherfucking WaveRace.
