Other M deserves better

The story is undoubtedly dumb, but I really enjoyed the quasi-2D gameplay.

I think the reason most people dislike it is because it followed Retro's excellent Prime series.

It wouldn't lessen her fear of Ridley, technically someone coming back from the dead over and over should incite some caution from someone. And since there was not one lick of characterization in the pre-Fusion Metroid games who's to say she wasn't scared then.

Well, besides that whole remake of the first game which does not feature Samus spazzing out when she fights Ridley.

You'd still assume she was over it since the manga everybody points to when you insult this game's god awful plot even ends with Samus freaking out but then getting over Ridley's return from the dead, contradicting her behavior in Other M
for the umpteenth time, Retro or not

She has PTSD. It's not something you just get over. It's a disorder where you're just fine, something triggers an invasive memory, and you just shut down or go crazy. Other M would be a relapse.

The best thing Other M did for me was help me appreciate Retro's work a little more. Despite a few nagging issues I had with the Prime games, Other M made me realize I didn't actually want what I thought I wanted.

Tether that shit up with Oculus Rift support and send me to Zebes, please.

It is one of those games where I just wonder how the fuck it even happened. As a whole with it's characters, story, and controls I just wonder, how?

Didn't like the graphics, didn't like the gameplay, didn't like the story. Also didn't care much for Prime 2, but every other Metroid game is aces.

I'm pretty sure I like this game more than Metroid Fusion though, which is honestly a bigger failure yet fails to be acknowledged as such

Well now you've brought up another discussion. I loved Fusion. Even though it was linear, I still had fun with it. What parts of it didn't you like?

I've played Metroid, Metroid II, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2, and Metroid Prime: Hunters. Metroid: Other M actually got me into the Metroid franchise. It was my first Metroid game, and I went back and started playing the others because I loved Other M so much. I haven't liked any of the others as much as Other M, but I like them all.

Go play Super Metroid.

I'm done with you. Other people can handle this.

Now back to normal, non-antagonistic Toa TAK! :D

The music's good, though, isn't it?
I thought the Ridley music was great. But I don't remember anything else.

The jump from being "scared" and paralyzing fear is pretty big.

I don't think it can be considered a relapse if it's the first time :p

Pretty amazing that it only happened one time in her entire career of fighting the space pirates.

None of those games shared her inner thoughts, but we've already established that she knew he was still alive in those games. What else was she going to find in a place called Ridley? Hell, in the beginning of Super Metroid, Ridley beats her within an inch of her life.

That much focus on story had NO business in a Metroid game, and that's not even taking into account the overall quality of said story.

Super Metroid did it perfectly, there's absolutely no reason to deviate from that.

I think had the story not been such a ridiculous mess Other M would have been much more well received, instead the whole game is treated as a punchline. Personally I greatly enjoyed the classic style/FPS hybrid they went with, aside from the stupid pixel hunting sections it was a very well designed game with plenty of great action sequences. I wouldn't mind seeing another game in the same style.

I was never attached to Samus as a character, so the story stuff didn't bother me at all. The gameplay was fine and I actually had fun playing it. Only stupid parts were the pointer and the omg i have power bombs now.

Everything that needs to be said about the story has been said already so I ain't gonna repeat it.

But I had great amounts of fun running around with the Speed Booster and fighting stuff was fun too. The pointer view you had to take I didn't mind either.

I think you can count how many people on GAF like this game on one hand and I'd be one of those fingers. The game really does deserve the criticisms it gets, I'm a bit more forgiving in that regard.

I have yet to met in person someone who actually disliked this game. All Metroid fans I know (all 4 of us) and people that played the game (some more) either loved it really like it.

No one is going to say that it's better that Super Metroid, but no one considers Other M a bad game. As for Metroid Prime, well, that's another "genre", according to most of them (or Other M is right there, among that wonderful trilogy).

Things I liked:

  • The third person controls, very fluid movement for just the d-pad.
  • Hand to hand combat.

Things I hated:

  • First person controls.
  • Not being able to move in first person.
  • Third person shooting is auto lock-on.
  • Super repetitive combat.
  • Level design is very sloppy at times.
  • Completely linear structure.
  • Missile/health recharge.

I didn't include anything about the story in my list because it is the least of my concerns. Sure, it could have been so much better, but the game mechanics come first.

Pretty much this. I'm glad the awful, broken dodge mechanic is mentioned. Playing Kid Icarus Uprising, the Dodge mechanic in that made me think just how good Other M could have been.

Too linear, story sucks. But I really loved the control scheme, and I would like another Metroid game with those controls. I also thought the visual style was great and a really nice contrast to Prime's interpretation of the Metroid universe in 3D

Thanks for the music comments, guys. I've only heard the "Ridley fight" music, and I quite liked that. Plus I prefer 2D over 3D. It's too bat the plot of this game is so awful.

It wasn't the first time. In the manga, when she found out Ridley was still alive and had regenerated his body by eating her parents she freaked out and wanted to commit suicide. She overcame her trauma and kicked Ridley's ass. In Other M she has a relapse, which wasn't nearly as bad as her manga freakout.

The same manga that contradicts Other M and the same Prime that according to Sakamoto himself is canon.

See, this is why it really sucks to me. I would love a Metroid with a real story and Samus being a real speaking character (and I really wish there would be a Zelda game where Link was a real character and spoke). But, now Nintendo has "proof" that it just doesn't work. Though, there are obviously people like you who agree, so I guess it's good news for you that it'll be a long time before they try something like Other M again.

While I somewhat agree with you OP I still think they could do a better job about the story and the controls but that's in the past now, what I want is a new game that follows Metroid Fusion.

I've played a bit of Super Metroid, but I don't own it so I haven't played a whole lot. I'm waiting for Nintendo to announce their Wii U Virtual Console plans before buying it on Wii. I'm well aware of Super Metroid's reputation, and I'm sure I'll love the game, but the fact is that I prefer the type of gameplay and story in Other M over the other Metroid games. They're all amazing games, that's for sure, but I just don't find them as enjoyable as Other M, personally.

They're both canon, just not at the same time.

The manga is referenced in Fusion, Zero Mission, and Other M.

In Other M, when she has her relapse, it shows she's flashing back to when she was a little girl.

No, everything about this game is bad, from the controls (dodge mechanic, movement being on the dpad, having to stay in one place to aim and fire missiles and watch as your wiimote goes nuts going from horiZontal position to vertical) to the visuals (jaggey mess, ugly human characters, Samus in heels) to god awful story and writing. I paid 10 bucks for it and I still felt ripped off buying it and wasting my time with it.

You know what pissed me off the most about this game?

How they handled power bombs. You need to use a power bomb to defeat the Metroid queen, but the game never tells you that you can use them, or even reminds you how to use them The only time you used it was waaay back at the beginning during the tutorial.

Then after the credits, when you go back for the dumb helmet, the first thing the game tells you is how to use power bombs. So freaking dumb.

But I really hate how people believe that the only reason people hate the game is the story. It's like the precursor to "Dante doesn't have white hair." The gameplay suffered due to the myriad of poor design choices. Everything related to first-person, the pixel hunts, the recharge mechanic, constantly interrupting gameplay with cutscenes or more pixel hunts.

About how I felt.

The blurry graphics and terrible gameplay combined in an unholy unity formed the pixel hunts and some genius had the idea to make this the (bosses spoiler)
"final boss battle"
. Yeah this is the only time I ever had the urge to break a controller.
