Edge: PS4 to launch in Europe in early 2014, US/JP 2013, more powerful than next Xbox

Letting MS potentially have the UK market all to themselves this Xmas, a market MS are about to take the lead in, doesn't look good.

I am curious on media playback capabilities also. Currently there are certain files and file sizes I cant play natively unless I use the media server.

Don't burn me at the stake GAF, but I was hoping we'd get a same size DS controller, that was more ergonomic with a nice little touchscreen. Not a touch pad.

But I guess they have to draw the line somewhere. Gotta make this bitch affordable.

I think I'm still day 1. Will see if they shock the world come 02/20.

A next gen fifa, next gen cod on top with a known delay for ps4 ms would kill this xmas, they wouldnt be able to keep up with demand imho.

Which is why I think this rumour is BS. Sony should realise that it is better to launch WW and have a few shortages than give MS a clear run with next gen entries of the big franchises. Unless Sony are absolutely certain that either there aren't going to be next gen COD/FIFA releases until 2014 and it will be MS first party only then they have to release WW in Nov/Dec. Even if they launch on the 18th December in Europe with 1m units it would be fine as people will wait a few weeks as long as they can get it before Xmas.

If they want to press their advantage of free online they need to make sure there is no opportunity for MS to build a base of players who "want to play with their friends" on XBL. Free PSN will work if they get first.

when the 360 launched, it was a different playing field. japanese studios and titles were still very dominant in the market and sony led the charge.

360 was also seen as an unknown. people couldn't be sure if it would still be around in a couple of years, especially after the xbox.

it's alll different now, western studios and titles are firmly running the show and there's no worry about them suddenly dropping out of the market. if microsoft launch with next gen fifa, cod, etc it could see the tide turn in their favour.

Not only that, 360 had the worst hardware quality of all consoles ever released and the EU is more quality minded than the US which is why it never caught on during the 17 month headstart. RROD really destroyed the Xbox reputation in Europe. MS won't make the same mistake again, that's for sure.

No one else answered, so here I go.

Stacked RAM comes as how it sounds. Instead of laying the chips side by side on the PCB (the board) the chips are stacked on top of one another. Because of this, the connections are basically going through each other creating "instant" connections, thus increasing the bandwidth (the amount of data that can be sent within a period of time).

See pic.

GDDR5... the G simply means graphics. (Graphics Double Data Rate, version 5).

GDDR5 has existed for years. It's super fast, but super hot. The only companies that really use it are GPU manufacturers, and frankly not enough of those sell to justify the manufacturing costs for some companies. That's why it's "dying out."

DDR4 is the next iteration of DDR3, which has also been out for years. DDR4 is supposed to be more efficient. Requiring less power, resulting in less heat. It's also relatively "slow." First iterations will be slower than current DDR3 speeds, but will be able to achieve higher speeds (and lower costs) as time goes by.

Thank you, it clearer now. I was just confused because 5 > 4 . :P

G is for graphics because it's mainly used in video cards.

Not sure what people mean by saying that GDDR5 is "dying out."

GDDR5 is a fast, high-bandwidth type of memory that's based on DDR3, which is used in desktops.

DDR4 is a new type of memory with more dramatic design changes.

Great, thanks for the explanation. :)

If that is true when why has the 360 in it's year headstart fail to gain a stronger foothold? Europe has proven it could wait in the past, why would it suddenly change? I just don't see the rationale.

Tens of millions of console sales separated the PS2 and Xbox in Europe. While the PS3 has been more successful than the 360 overall in Europe, there has still been a big shift in marketshare. Giving Microsoft opportunities to grow their marketshare further in Europe next gen could be bad for Sony.

I have a question,

wasn't the PS3 more powerful than the 360?

That didn't help much, it should not be the focus. Better to understand how that power will be used.

MS already has me in a stage where I trust them no matter what they do next gen. They earned my business.

I'm hoping PS4 really does push the envelope, and comes back strong. I want competition. I don't want their top be just one console to choose from.

The situation seems quite different, the PS3 had a significantly more powerful CPU with Cell (which required a lot of learning to master) but at the same time the GPU is weaker, the memory pool is split and the OS footprint has been bigger for a long time.
This time PS4 is supposed to have a more straightforward architecture while also counting on more compute units and a much higher bandwidth. Developers on the next Xbox will have to take advantage of the embedded ram in fancy ways just to step aside the DDR3 limitations and they'll have to take advantage of different modules to mask the disadvantages in pure raw power. That is of course if the leakes specs are true.

Have you seen the last couple of Microsoft E3's?!

Also look at Sony 1st party vs MS 1st party. There's your answer to the
"more powerful" question.

Dat PS3 exclusive Draw Distance.

It's the developer talent more than the hardware.

The article is surely implying that 4GB of GDDR5 will match the PERFORMANCE (not capacity) of 8GB DDR3.

THERE IS NO WAY THE SYSTEM WILL HAVE 8GB OF GDDR5

People said the same thing for months about 8GB of DDR3 for both the HD twins and Durango has it.

Let's wait and see.

The only thing I believe for sure is that if they really add more RAM it won't be DDR3.

Adding a different type of RAM is not the same as adding more of the same type of RAM. It would require more work and Sony doesn't want to be late to the party.

More good stuff coming from the PS4 rumour mill. I'm skeptical about seeing that top up of RAM, but the share function sounds amazing and could well prove to be a massive selling point.

Nice to hear the controller isn't having a display forced on it; I still think the Vita will be used to offer some sort of enhanced remote play functionality. I'm OK with the touch pad, providing it is there for OS and menu navigation purposes and not to be shoehorned into actual game play.

The suggested release dates, while disappointing (speaking as a UK resident), do make sense to me. The US is the largest market and also the one where Sony seriously lost ground. Those two facts alone make it essential that they make NA a priority. As for Japan, while it may be a smaller market than the EU, it is home turf - no company should launch significantly later in their native market. It ends up meaning an agonising extra few months of waiting, but I remember when consoles used to take over a year after their initial release to filter through to Europe, with the games being no quicker. Despite catering for multiple languages and dealing with the problems posed by simultaneously launching in multiple distinct countries, a lot of the time, we see close to release date parity over here now, and I for one am grateful for that.

As for the new Xbox having a suggested head start, I seriously doubt a few months is enough to erode the PS brand over here so much that it would be a critical mistake to let MS get off the blocks first.

You do realise that the 360 sold better than the PS3 in the UK?

They gave me everything I wanted this gen, their online was top notch. Their system updates phenomenal (and it doesn't take 2 hours)

The exclusives have been great, and then games like Forza 4 pushing past my tried and tested GT series. Gears, Halo, COD always being better on the 360............its been an amazing run for me with the 360.

I will say this I have owned 7-8 360 this entire gen.
My launch PS3 still works.

No BC, maybe psn titles if were are lucky.

There is no such thing as PSN titles. There are PS3 games, and they can release at retail, on PSN or on both. They BOTH need the same hardware. If the PS4 is able to play any of the digital content you own, then it should also be able to play the retail content.

I really hope they have some dedicated video encoder logic that does nothing but encodes the gameplay video - because otherwise there can't be no performance penalty involved with something like that. Realtime video encoding, especially at HD resolutions is very CPU intensive.

Which would also serve for remote playing all ps4 games to vita, and possibly tablets too

The "Share Button" has me really excited. This is the kind of feature I want my next-gen consoles to have. It's the fucking future ! :)

Infamous 2 has better effects, character animation, and probably textures than RDR though. It is a very good looking game considering it is open world.

Wow, there's a lot of great news in this article. Share button and developers liking PS4 are both awesome news. Glad it's hitting 2013 over here. Sorry Euros.

I guess it depends on our wants. I don't really game online so that part doesn't concern me that much. I'm judging based entirely on single player 1st party games. That's where I feel Sony came through more so than MS. I absolutely love the Forza series though. Alan Wake was interesting as well. Everything else, not so much.

As for the future...

I hope you really like Kinect : )

To those complaining about EU getting it later - I'm in the UK - I would say to you this:

Every Sony console, ever, has released in Japan significantly earlier than the EU.
Every Sony console, ever, has released in NA ealier than the EU.

Why the fuck would people expect this to be any different?
Because this isn't the stone age, at that price they could get their act together and not treat us as second class citizens.

It's OK. I'm sure they did it out of consideration for the state of economies around Europe - we need the extra time to save.

As someone who played both... It actually didn't. Plus it had worse IQ.

The weather effects and day night cycle in RDR is currently unrivaled.

Outside UK 360 is still behind PS3 in popularity and even in UK it's nowhere near the domination normally touted. The 360 dominates one territory only and that's the US - UK it for sure sells more but the ratio split is much closer and of course that's with PS3 launching much later.

I reckon no sensible publisher at this point would risk upsetting the apple-cart backing MS in Europe - the risk they'd be handing off millions of sales would be too high. Now for sure MS is in a better position in Europe than before, but it's not that much better, and in fact their issue isn't the console but the fact Live is so gimped in so much of Europe vs PSN. That alone I suspect will prevent MS gaining much additional ground unless they annouce huge Live improvements as well.

At present I'd say the evidence on form is that it won't overly hurt Sony to launch after MS in Europe.

Now would it be better to launch same time? Sure. Will they lose some customers launching later? Sure. But there is very little actual evidence or indication it'll cost them much.

I don't really get why they always delay Europe though - would be interested to know why (assuming there is a known why).

The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.

I wasn't planning on getting PS4 for a couple of years, but that feature for recording and sharing video would make me get one at launch. I love when games have recording features. Having one for all PS4 games would be a dream come true.
