Edge: PS4 to launch in Europe in early 2014, US/JP 2013, more powerful than next Xbox

Here is an "old" chart. I am seeing the same price as you are. Keep in mind that the GDDR5 clock speed affects the price as well. Give that PS4 is alleged to have dropped their target from 192 to 176GB/sec (down clocked) I would align my guess with $15/GB and it may even be cheaper with contract of bulk purchase.

I would guess Sony is paying no more than $40 for 4GB GDDR5, not including cooling and integration. MS could get 8GB DDR3 for the same, they are also pushing for (currently) high speed stuff if the reported DDR-2133 is being used.

Of course the DDR3 will be replaced with DDR4 and the price will drop quickly. But maybe Sony has a plan to replace the GDDR5 with something with comparable bandwidth in the future.

I was really hoping for a more similar launch frame this time around. I'll still hold my hopes that that part of the rumours is atleast false.

I dont think I'll manage to hold out for the Playstation if the new Xbox on the other hand, is available in the Christmas season.

=\

At this point in time how can you actually believe that? Far too early to say that and last time Sony was pretty much king. Things have changed a lot.

It is getting interesting though. :)

Maybe, but the obvious reality of Sony not launching a year behind is exceedingly better than last gen.

That RAM rumor is definitely bs; if they can somehow add an extra 2GB of DDR5 for a total of 6GB DDR5 then I'd be there day 1 even at $500. But I know that's not happening, just wishful thinking...

Material for MamaRobotic - directly from the Playstationlabs!
Orbis is gonna shaped like a wolf, you can stack in as much GDDR5 RAM aus you want, it will include a beamer it runs Motorstorm with bikes and includes the social revolution: Twitter in real! Designed by a cloned Kutaragi!

Frankenstein`s Monster = Kutaragi
Phantomas = Kaz
Generic Enginer = Generic Engineer

If they can design the controller to have offset analog sticks and implement cross game parties with chat, MS needs to be concerned.

Yeah, those offset analogue sticks are totally gonna clean up the market. It is what everyone has been clamouring for.

Why does it seem like everyone who doesn't like symmetrical sticks thinks their view is universal.

Won't this put strain on the HDD after time? I don't want a crashed HDD. Games already stream all the time.
Now that you mention this, the constant writing would be even worse for people who were planning to install SSDs in their PS4s. That is, unless they don't care about recording and their is a way to disable it.

Yeah because symmetrical analog sticks is what held back the PS3 this gen...LOL.
Asymmetrical analog sticks in a symmetrical controller is idiocy. You would need to make the right grip longer on the 360 stick to make it more anatomically correct.

the lowest common denominator is to think that way, because it requires effort to include a viewpoint that is different from your own into your world view. anything that requires effort has an immediate uphill battle. it's much easier (no effort) to think that your personal viewpoint is universal.

If ms launch first in uk I could see it being difficult for Sony to catch up here.

Meh I don't think its really is that clear cut. US is the primary Western market to the point if you can win the customers in US, publishers/devs would follow the trail and with them the games. Games ultimately decide which systems sell or not. Europe is a market which is not as independent from the NA market as Japan is. Usually, the console which wins NA wins the console war.

Not to dismiss any source or any posters, but I highly, highly doubt Nextbox or PS4 will release this year....Late next year maybe for PS4. March 2015 looks ideal to me from Sony's standpoint. It just doesn't have enough breathing room between now and the year end. I'm sure 1st party studios are working with a sdk, but there's just not enough time between unveiling games now and releasing them 9 months from now. All we have in terms of media is Agni's philosphy and a few tech demos. Not a single screenshot released. If it's announced that it will be released this year, then it will an extremely brash decision on Sony's part, as much as I want my grubby mitts on a PS4 controller. I think part of this is coming from me following the launch of previous 4 generation of consoles. This will be really unprecedented.

You realize most systems have launched when being unveiled at the same years E3???

Joke post?

2015!?

Latest will be spring 2014. But these consoles are 99% certain to launch this side of christmas in the US at the very least.

Haha nope. This gen ends by Q2-3 of this year. We know Steambox is going to compete directly with next-gen consoles and they'll be out by early next year with a lot of information blast before then.

Xbox 360 was announced and launched the same year. PS3 wasn't, but I don't think Sony wants a repeat of that, having an 18 month window before release after an announcement is simply not viable. That means a year and a half of hyping, marketing and preparing a system that isn't even making any money yet, The most successful consumer electronics companies in the world now release products within weeks after announcing them. The cycle of announcement philosophy has changed a lot from what we are used to.

That and the fact that there is way too much smoke floating around for there not to be any fire

Personally I think the industry should stagnate until I finish my backlog of games I've had 6 years to play and haven't touched yet. 2015 sounds good to me, right guys?

"A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet."

I look forward to the internet being flooded with shitty COD headshot montages uploaded by 12 year olds. This is gonna rock.

Because the industry wants to wait on you. Because they want to continue using technology over a decade old to push newer ideas. We have gone as far as we can. You are the reason BC exists.

It already is.

Whichever console that releases Fifa first in Europe wins.

2015? Sony would be dead if they waited that long lol.

You say you followed the launch of the last 4 generations... did you skip xbox 360?

Sooooo, i've been looking for parts for a new PC and i notice prices for SSD been dropping lately ....what are the chances the top of the line model PS4 has SSD?!

All this hype was bound to end badly for me and now Europe possibly getting shafted by Sony has really killed my buzz.
I still have the intention to get both systems, but treatment like that would certainly trigger a hostility towards the guilty party.

You really expected something different? Jeez, I'm from Aus so its the same thing - it's just par for the course

That complex system does not seem to affect Microsoft, Apple or Nintendo.

Huh? I think you really need to research Apple's history of "rolling" launches (a group of countries at a time, followed by another group, and another,) with just about every single product that contains a radio transmitter (wifi or cellular) that they've released since the first iPhone.

This is hardly uncommon. To launch in NA, you only need to deal with 3 countries' bureaucracies and three languages.

I suppose this means the console would be released early next year in AUNZ as well (since we generally get similar launch dates to Europe), which actually sounds quite good for me. If all goes according to plan I would have been working for a few months by then and should have a bit of money to afford it - as long as it's not too expensive -.

I can't really bring myself to be excited. On previous generations, I used to get real excited over the prospect of new consoles coming and what new experiences I would see. But now? Not really. I just don't care. I don't care whether one is more powerful than another. That doesn't even sell me. Will the games be good? All I care for. If they are bland, uninteresting, and end up being the same stuff we've been getting, only dressed up prettier, I doubt I would be enticed to play it.

The iPhone 5 had 16 days between its announcement and its release in the USA, Canada, all of Europe, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong, with no more than a week separating some countries.

The iPad 4 had 10 days between its announcement and its release in all of North America, all of Europe, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Korea. All on the same day.

According to this article, the PS4 will have 270 days between its announcement and release in North America and Japan, and 390 days in Europe.

Unacceptable.
