Edge: PS4 to launch in Europe in early 2014, US/JP 2013, more powerful than next Xbox

8 GB of GDDR5 is really the only way to completely destroy Xbox 3 in visuals. If they'll go with 4 then it'll be an either / or situation with some games looking better on Xbox 3 and some on PS4.
With that being said I doubt that we'll see 8 GB of GDDR5 in PS4.

Xbox live sucks in Europe except for the UK. I won't pay for online period, especially not if MS can't offer me intersting services. Sony won't have to worry about MS in mainland Europe, the PS3 launched more than a year after the 360 in Europe and it didn't matter, I doubt the time difference will be that big this time and it won't matter anyway. Some of you don't know how unpopular Xbox is in Europe. I mean despite the year head start, Sony's massive fuck ups with the PS3 and the 360's dominance in the US, it still wasn't able to beat the PS3 ww.

I agree, Sony will probably be ok in mainland Europe regardless, but you'd think that they would want to try and take back the UK?

UK is most definitely MS territory at the moment but a strong PS4 launch would prob have a chance of changing the tide... Not if they launch in 2014 though.

I wonder if adding the extra RAM is more so that the system can constantly record video like it's been rumored to be able to do.

Wow again Sony snubs Europe. I'll just import an NTSC build regardless. Not waiting 3-4 months like the PS3.

In the UK? Maybe.
In the rest of EU? Hell no.

Any info on how it's in scandinavia? I remember reading, that the PS3 and PC were the most popular here in Finland.

did you guys really expect a worldwide launch? Sony likes to tease europe ... always the same story. I did not expect anything other than that. the RAM rumour sounds to good to be true but we can always hope ^^.

I never buy a console at its release cause most launch games are still testing the hardware.. nope, will wait 6 months.

Seems like that few months difference is a big deal when the tables have been turned, as evidenced by the PS+ threads. And I imagine the whining would be the same, or even worse, if the PS4 was released in NA in 2014.

If the system was delayed in the US there wouldn't be whining, just a massive loss of sales. They have to do everything they can to win back US sales. It is the Playstation's worse division right now.

the recording video thing is awesome but what would be insane is if you could use a twitch app and directly stream the footage from your console onto twitch or something

To a certain degree, it kind of makes sense to launch late in Europe (even though I would be affected).

Take the 360's launch here. In the town where I live, only 2 stores had the console on launch day. Each only had 10 units each.

So thats 20 units in a town of 90k people. Luckily, I was one of the few who got a console (even though the store manager tried to shaft me in favour of a friend) but I know that other people who preordered the same day as me, had to wait 2 months till another batch was delivered

So we can sit here complaining about a delayed launch but the truth is we would have to be extremely lucky to get our hands on any of these consoles at launch.

Launching in Europe IS harder, even within the EU there's tons of different laws to be considered in different countries, pricing, different distribution partners I guess and translations for games and manuals including warranty papers etc. But it IS doable to include Europe/PAL in a WW launch, you just have to start earlier or throw more people at it to get it all done in time.

Even if it's just a paper launch with few consoles available due to manufacturing speeds would improve people's goodwill compared to "You are last, dealwithit", but given the added hoops you have to jump through, that might be not attractive for the company in question. Might make more sense to paper launch in Japan and throw the consoles on European shelves, the console market in Japan is shrinking anyway.

Of course it is doable since multiple other companies have done it. Nintendo did it just a few months ago.

Only slightly more powerful than the nextbox? That eases my mind somewhat.

(I was worried that the nextbox might be severely lagging behind because of MS's bigger focus on entertainment services rather than just gaming)

I know, I was just trying to highlight that there's other things to consider than the amount of hardware units manufactured, as most posts do.

Btw, I hope there aren't more "the ship with all the PS3s on board sank" memes for next gen.

Cross game chat is guaranteed, since it is already on the vita.

we need a good amount of bandwidth for voicechat in general. i hote, that sony ist not making any savings for other not-so-important stuff.
imo, the best solution for that would be, to integrate high-bandwidth voicechat for ps+ members.

I'm no tech expert but is this enough for cross game chat?

Cross game chat doesn't need much at all - heck the Vita has it. The issue with PS3 is they didn't factor it in up front and their OS was larger from the start. When they wanted to add cross-game chat (which PS3 technically could support) the issue was clearly that they couldn't shrink the OS enough, add cross-game chat and still keep the total OS footprint when games were running below the level needed for older PS3 games.

It's pretty clear they could have put cross-game chat on PS3 but they would have rendered a fair number of games released beforehand unable to run and/or support it.

Bottom line it should be easy for PS4 to have it so long as it's planned in from the start (which I presume based on Vita having it will be the case).

If Sony doubles the ram, I imagine ms would want to upgrade too.
Except at that point their design (low latency, DME etc) would be useless.

MS isn't panicking. Might be thrown off that Sony is the aggressive one this time around tho.

I hope not. they should have expected sony to be very aggressive after what happened this gen.

would be incredibly arrogant and I'd have serious concerns about what's going at the Xbox division if they are thrown by sony's aggressiveness.

Not all Sony devs are saying EU in 2014. Some are saying US instead. Some are saying worldwide 2013. Take that quote with salt grains

Only slightly? Last time I looked, 4GB of GDDR5 was more powerful than 8GB DDR3 and thats not including MS's big OS plans. Of course these are all rumours but do you haven any insider info or where did you get this info form?

NVM looked at the post above

Fuck you Sony, Europe is your best market and you give us your shit always late and more expensive.
Release your console here first and priced properly and you will have the best selling console of the gen during the entire generation since day 1.

Only slightly more powerful?

Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, and Guerilla Games will put an end to that silly notion, lol.

I fully expect those three to blow everyone out of the water.

i guess the console is as always a just-in-time solution.
so there would be not enough time to satisfy the the launches with enough SKUs and the us- and japangamer would betatest the os for us. however, i would gladly do that too :(

It's going to be a WW launch within a month. They have just started that with Xperia Z/ZL, if they can do it with a smartphone, they can do it with a console. In fact smartphones are harder because they need to be certified for safety with their GSM radios.

Seriously, there should be no reason that a company like Sony shouldn't be able to get a WW launch ready, especially with the likely poor reception in Japan given the lack of local content.

Sounds to me Sony is giving different indications to different developers so their plans don't leak.

A bit of a stretch, but I'l take anything at this point.

More power means nothing until I see which system gets the better versions of third party games (aka 95% of the best games this gen).

Someone 'forgot' to include PS2 sales there. Nice way of counting market share.

I think that chart is showing sales in the year of 2012. In which case PS2 would have been less than one pixel wide on that chart.

What would be nice to see is a chart showing PS2 & PS3 sales since the generation started.

You do realize that the Euro is one the primary reasons it's expensive right?

Blame your fucked up economy, not Sony.

I don't see that being an issue for Sony this time around. Even if they don't end up being the lead platform, it doesn't appear, based on the rumors we have, as if devs will need to do anything drastically different to take advantage of the power of Sony's console.

lol they'd be stupid as hell to launch in US last next year. If they have any hope of regaining this territory they need to come out firing immediately.

If Sony really felt a threat of losing Europe over a short delay, they'd make every effort to get it out sooner but I don't honestly think they feel it will cost them much. If there is a delayed launch in Europe, I'm sure it was carefully considered.

Lol..the only thing they considered, are the extra units that will be available to the Japanese & US markets on launch day...it would have taken them all of 30 secs to make the decision.

'complexities of European distribution'...what a load of bullshit, It's all about getting as many units under as many TV's as possible in the 2 single biggest markets before Microsoft can.

Japan is a bigger market than the EU? Is that true these days? For a home console?
