Edge: PS4 to launch in Europe in early 2014, US/JP 2013, more powerful than next Xbox

Microsoft just issued a response to Polygon in regard to Sony's February 20 event:

We welcome innovation in the category. It's an amazing time for the industry, and an even better time for Xbox 360 owners. At Xbox, we're focused on making the content you love even more amazing including blockbuster games, and new entertainment experiences. We're always thinking about what's next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time.

That's some iraqi defence minister bullshit right here. No one gives a shit about the 360 and 360 owners.

It's all about the new console hype!

2014 in Europe huh, that blows. Thank god Canada boarders the US or we would get everything last. Worst comes to worst I could just make the hour plus trip to the boarder and buy it there day 1 lol.

Why would you cross the border if you can already get in Canada on the same day? Plus pertaining to EU, people do not even know what is time gap between the two launches. Would people really chuck rocks if the delay is between 1-2 months?

I wouldn't cross the boarder, because it will launch here day 1. Just saying that if that wasn't the case,I'd still have the option of just crossing the boarder.

I just wanted to let everyone here know that a nuclear apocalypse wasn't the only thing forshadowed in Fist of the North Star..

Hmm when they said controller redesign I had hoped that meant they would finally make it ergonomical, not add a touchpad in the middle. Still interested in jumping ship if these rumours appear to be true. Microsoft can stuff their paywalls and nickle and diming while at the same time offering no exclusives where the sun don't shine.

They did, but those would have been off the shelf components rigged up to give the developers an idea what they were shooting at. 8GB of system RAM and 2GB of GDDR5 on a graphics card would be perfectly normal.

8GB in the latest dev kit with no mention of any other ram suggests it's closer to final hardware

From one of the leaks about old devkits.

If the dev kits have 8 GB's of ram then the final hardware will have 4 or 6 gb's. Dev kits always have extra memory.

I think I usually predicted PS4 to launch in 2015 earliest.

If it is true that this launches even this year,my guess is Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be released on this console.

it reads like a standard press release. they must be making a pretty decent profit from the 360, so it makes sense not to rock the boat and stunt sales before they need to.

this is where I fear sony may have jumped the gun a little. announcing a new console so soon, could see their ps3 sales falter considerably and when your next gen machine isn't out for upwards of 9 months (or less / move), that's never a good thing to happen.

Sorry, when I was saying closer to final I meant in terms of it being a unified pool of GDDR5 compared to earlier dev kits which would have had a split DDR3/GDDR5 pools because of the hardware used. I know that dev kits have more ram than retail models.

Yeah Sony should definitely do something more with Little Big Planet, its so distinct and filled with charm.

Make it a 3D game... that has always been the limitation on LBP getting incredibly popular.

You let people do 3D in LBP proper, like they did with LBPK, and suddenly you change the entire landscape of what's possible.

How much did Mario Galaxy sell, and how much did NSMB sell?

It does not sell incredible numbers because it has less brand name than the only platformer that sells incredibly, and because it does the basics (the jumping and platforming mechanics) less well than Mario. it has nothing to do with it being 2D

It's hard to speculate on that when we know practically nothing about it. Still, beefing up the GPU at the very least shouldn't be that hard.

That said, I don't think that it's Microsoft's imperative to have the best hardware, it should just be "good enough" and not too pricey. I think they'll try to differentiate their platform in other ways.

Not the best, but I don't think they'll want the ps4 to destroy Durango.
You don't have to have the best graphics to win the console war, but being clearly inferior (think Saturn vs psone) would be very bad for them.
Actually, idk, but it would certainly be bad for me !

Fuck you Sony, Europe is your best market and you give us your shit always late and more expensive.
Release your console here first and priced properly and you will have the best selling console of the gen during the entire generation since day 1.

Isn't it only more expensive because tax is included in the price whereas all the US prices are pre-tax?

Sony launches in NA 11/13
Sony launches in JAPAN 12/13
Sony launches in EUROPE 3/14
Sony launches ELSEWHERE 6/14+

MS launches in NA 11/13
MS launches in EUROPE 12/13
MS launches in JAPAN 3/14
MS launches ELSEWHERE 6/14+

I think that's a pretty safe prediction and a logical strategy by both sides.

I actually think MS should delay their Japan launch to 8/14 or later to come out with a smaller form factor (revision) for that market and to have a stellar launch line-up ready along with a reduced launch price. Also, they should partner with a Japanese company to re-brand the box. Anything else would be, once again, futile.

If the system was delayed in the US there wouldn't be whining, just a massive loss of sales. They have to do everything they can to win back US sales. It is the Playstation's worse division right now.

I find that very hard to believe.

I think Japan should go last if any region has to wait.

Hear, hear! The smallest (ie. most insignificant) region should be the last, and it's unlikely they'd be threatened by MS in Japan.

How dare you EU folk feel entitled to get hardware at the same time as us in the States, or even earlier. You guys hoard the real Top Gear for at least a week now, to months before from us.

I say, give JP 50k units to claim you launched there, ship the rest to NA and EU (if they agree to release Top Gear same night from here on out), toss a couple to Aussy GAF, call it a day. They have to focus on China this time too now.

What I was saying is that in the US, people would vote with their wallets and just not buy the system if it was delayed.

And that's what I'd call a hissy fit. ;) Only someone, who's accustomed to being served first would even consider doing so, when moved to the end of the line. At least we'll buy the system any way, albeit grudginly.

That's only people who have already made their mind up on which to buy.

People who want Next Gen Game X will just buy the available system that can play it and be happy.
And they'll likely stick to that system only.

The average US gamer is the mountain dew yearly COD/Madden player. It doesn't matter to them. It matters who is first and who is cheapest. They mostly will just buy the system their friends have to play COD/Madden with them.

Well, I bet many have already made up their minds based on the 1st party offerings. They are the reason I'd buy the PS4, even if it was weaker than XB3. After all, I was perfectly content with the PS2, even when Xbox was more powerful.

When you look at NPD you'll see what games sell in the US.

EDIT: I always buy a new system based on the experiences I had previously, and the promise of things ahead. So far I haven't been disappointed. Although the downfall of Silent Hill, and horror genre in general, was a huge disappointment, as would be if the PS4 won't have a new WipEout. But overall, I've been satisfied, so there's no need to move to another system.

lol if u think MS will have a revision 10 months after launch.. No offence bro but use your head.

What's interesting is that Sony was penned to fail hard this gen with that pricing and such. But they fought back to make it closer than expected, and that's with their epic mistakes. Sony as a company is hurting and they know the Playstation is one of their segments where they can be successful and I think Kaz already said they're pumping resources accordingly to it. It's going to be a bloody "next-gen" this time around, and as a primarily PC gamer these years, even I am excited for it.

no matter what, North America has to go first. They are the most consumer hungry market out of the regions that actually buys stuff despite of economic hardships.

Better release before Blackfriday and see madness next November lol

Well, based on PS3's six years of system sales; NA - 22 million, EU+UK - 37 million (32/5), I'd say it's obvious the european continent is more profitable for Sony. There's no way 22 million users would buy more than 37 million.

You can not torrent a ps4,

i think they should release in japan last. Europe and USA are way more important to be out the gates first.
