Monster Hunter 3 WiiU has region locked online multiplayer (NA/EU cant play together)

Uhhhmmmm.... Are you guys smoking fucking pot? This doesn't matter. This is a good decision.
Have none of you ever tried playing a game online across oceans? It's typically not the most enjoyable experience. Pings are typically at least 100ms. Now, we've got a game that's extremely fast paced in the sense that it is highly dependent on timing specific dodges, and failing to do so more or less means you fail as a whole.

And we think we want to have a laggy connection on that?

I'm going to agree with this. I had a friend who imported MH3 NA, and playing with him was like pulling teeth half the time. There's intermittent disconnections (partly from capcom's servers though), and the way that the online works (detailed here) means that someone won't be playing at their best (or even worse, not having fun). I stuck with him anyways, just because it was still a fun game to play. I also had a local friend join in to lighten the load as well.

Then again, the people complaining probably don't care for any kind of explanation/justification, or have no intention of buying the game anyways so it's all good.

This is really disappointing to me. My younger brother lives in the UK and I live in the States. It's 2013, and we still can't go hunting together. Thanks, Capcom.

It's Nintendo. Why is this surprising?

Cue the Reggie picture.

Nintendo does NOT do this for Mario Kart. It's rather strange of Capcom, maybe for the nature of this game it could be best because it's co-op and not competitive.

Still for Monster Hunter 4 on 3DS(which better have a timely localization) hopefully they will not do this.

Latency better have been the reason and too hard to solve, because keeping NA/EU players apart at least is bullshit. Though given some of the others doing similar I wonder if there's some other underlying problems they don't want to deal with?

In the case of Arenanet and Guild Wars 2, their official excuse is that they didn't want to provide an unstable user experience due to the US and EU data centers - such as if the connection is interrupted for a bit.

The thing is, and I've discussed this with EU friends - we, the people who have no choice but to play pan-region to play with friends, understand this. We know there may be more disconnects. We know there may be more latency. We're willing to take our chances, so it's frustrating when companies don't allow that.

IIRC, the Wii U version of the game has many of the same limitations as the 3DS version, and it's not as if you could do local multiplayer between EU and NA versions of the 3DS game.

So, arguably they aren't taking away anything that existed with the 3DS versions.

As far as whether or not it makes sense that you can't local coop with someone from a different region... It's not like you would ever leave your region and take your 3DS with you. Also, the idea that someone might want to do some local coop with someone outside their region? Patently absurd. ;)

did people in this thread play Tri or is this faux outrage? it was the same in that game and finding people was rarely a problem. i've played at 4 am and talked with people from Costa Rica and Brazil.

I don't know which is more surprising to me: that people expected cross-region play or that there are people crying about it. It's really not a big deal IMO.

Your circumstances are not everyone's. See this message posted above:

Try to have a little empathy.

It sucks that he can't hunt monsters with his brother because they live in different countries. But I was referring mainly to all the posters claiming this is a dealbreaker for them regarding purchasing the game. Do they all have international friends and family with whom they only wish to hunt with as well?

Could things be better? Certainly. But issues like having a universal language censor list is far more ridiculous and annoying than the lack of cross-region play unless you happen to have a family member overseas you wanted to hunt with.

Eh, doesn't bother me. I'm playing online and in person with 3 other IRL friends. On the weekends we'll probably do some beer+pizza and monhun.

I'd like to reiterate that this is NOT Nintendo's "fault." I have played with people from Europe, Japan, and Australia in Black Ops 2 Wii U. And yeah, I'm pretty sure this is how it was in MH3.

I don't get the outrage. This was same with Tri and I was able to find people to play with without fail.

And previous handheld entries didnt have online either. Now that its suddenly on WiiU, its doom and gloom. Sounds like people playing MH for first time.

This is not Nintendo, this is Capcom.
Black Ops II's multplayer is not region locked, neither is Assassin's Creed III's multiplayer for that matter.

On the other hand I gotta say that I was planning on playing this with friends anyway instead of all-around strangers.

We gotta write a game for this now.

drink if you...

set a trap and the monster leaves the area

get hit while sharpening a weapon or otherwise using a item

wake a sleeping monster up with a "weak" attack

get stunned

get tail-whipped

get one-hit killed

can't really think of any others at the moment.. :/

edit: a shot every time you launch a teammate. for sure.

That, and how you can see Miiverse from other regions...AND post on them. So, even if "it's Nintendo"...it would be because of Capcom's game; more than Nintendo region locking online because "it's Nintendo".

So is there any chance that the US version of the 3DS version will be able to play with the Japanese version? I only have a Japanese 3DS, so that's the version I bought. :(

Probably didn't want to pay for servers which ensures quality performance no matter the location. I dunno, but it's stupid either way.

Will play this with my little brother - me on the Wii U and he'll get the 3DS version

Doesn't affect me, but Capcom should think this through with MH4

Let's all blame Nintendo, despite every online Nintendo game since their first one, Mario Kart DS, having worldwide play! Grrrr, Nintendo!

Love how quick people are to jump on them these days.

Mario Tennis Open was region locked. In fact it was IP locked, if you imported the game the online mode didn't work. Hopefully that was a one-off and not a sign of things to come.

Anyway, shitty decision from Capcom and I won't be buying it now. I have friends across the world that I was going to play with.

Don't care at all! I'll continue to play with Japanese people (at least don't need to wait for people to be up to speed on the online front).
I understand some may find this not that cool though (I would if I had a PAL system).

Well, I guess Gaf>Internet>Gaf? :P

I shared the news here on Wednesday. This is the original news piece, as Siliconera points out.

Then, I interviewed Tsujimoto-san and asked several questions from gaffers. As shared in its thread:

Ok, here's my full report-interview from yesterday's event (in Spanish).

After confirming region-locked online and no Miiverse screens, I asked about different stuff. Sorry, no MH4 talk allowed. Asked about unlockables and studio behind Wii U version at your request: not same collabs as in Japan, but similar events and unlockables for Europe. Wii U was developed between guys from internal team (including main members) and support from external studio.

Then, there's the cutest pic from the event:

There are more details in the main piece. Just ask me if in doubt ;)

The latency excuse is really weak. I have been playing MHP3rd no problem with people from JP/US (I'm in the UK) for 100s of hours.

You'd think going PSVita -> PS3 (wifi) -> internet -> PS3(foreign) -> handheld would cause huge lag but it doesn't. Playing MH alone sucks bigtime and its the #1 reason why I couldn't get into the previous games. It's also the reason why I opted for MHP3rd instead of MH3G(better version) as local play isn't an option for me.

So you'd rather not play a game that you like at all than play it with other people than your selected friends?

Well to be fair outside of a few games I never play online games with strangers.
I will make an exception for MonHun (and I'm a solo guy anyway) but really I get the sentiment if he doesn't have people to play with in the region.

I don't see the big problem. When i play games with servers, i always choose european servers (BF3, TF2, CS 1.6) with ping under 50ms. I have 50mbit down and 10mbit upload (VDSL) but when i join games with ping higher thatn 100-150 it gets really shitty and mostly not really playable for me. There are people who don't care for bad connection or it's not that bad for them but i think they are in the minority.
