Microsoft making at least four new IPs

Broski, hate to be the dream-crusher here but the heart and soul of Rare left a while back (literally, a few of the guys that basically made Rare "Rare" left Microsoft).

Don't be shocked if we never see anything out of them that matches their previous glory.

Didn't those "heart and soul of Rare" guys make an underwhelming XBLA game? Plus if there are a lot of new people, can't they also make great games? See Playground - their first game was fantastic. I often don't get those posts.

Isn't it like saying Magic Johnson retired from The Lakers years ago and they won't win anymore championships again?

The Rare of the past is scattered all around different places.

Whether the old Rare employees are there or not doesn't take away from the following fact: Microsoft owns Perfect Dark, Banjo, Killer Instinct, and Conker. If they cannot create compelling next-gen exclusives based on those properties, then it will have nothing to do with the departure of Rare's old employees. There are talented developers everywhere, and if Microsoft chooses, they could assemble a team to create great software based on those franchises.

You guys can't cling on to old devs forever. Fresh faces can make great games, maybe even better than the old.

This is why I am for MS to rename Rare so people won't judge them on some tired nostalgia.

More like if Magic, Kareem, and Worthy all retired at the same time and had moved straight into the Nick Van Excel, Eddie Jones era.

The Lakers signed Shaq and traded for Kobe during the draft. Rare needs to show the ability to acquire new talent before we should take them seriously again. The likelihood of Rare becoming a good studio again is the same as any new start up, possibly less as they've got fewer vacancies and therefore fewer chances to strike gold.

In a way you are making my point. Just because the old guard is gone from Rare that doesn't mean that Rare will never make good games again. Just like if the old guard stayed around, doesn't guarantee success. Things change, nothing is static. We can only wait and see what will come but just saying the old guard is gone means nothing...

You guys are missing the point.

Will Nintendo be the same when Miyamoto eventually leaves.

HELL no.

That is not to say though that it wont still be great or still turn out great games. It will just be something...different. Same possibility with Rare.

But honestly, if anyone expects them to return to their "former glory", don't hold your breath.

What does that even mean? I just want them to keep making games I enjoy, such as Kameo. "Former glory"... Who cares, really? Should we shed tears over the fate of the Zelda franchise just because Nintendo is unlikely to produce another game in the series as groundbreaking and well regarded as Ocarina of Time, with or without Miyamoto, Aonuma & co.? Of course not. Is the recent Xcom game going to be as fondly remembered as the original? Probably not, but it's still a damn good game, even if it was made by a completely different team. The same with Deus Ex: Human Revolution and plenty of other titles.

So BigPark worked on Halo 4 and Star Wars Kinect too.

Based on the way MS is doling out work on all their games, they certainly could have a hand in it.

When there's already a whole other studio dedicated to it, albeit not huge, I don't see the point. Rare will no doubt be working on something else quite juicy though. Don't have a clue what though.

When was Rare ruled out..?

They weren't, I'm just saying that if another studio is on PGR5, it would make sense to keep Rare on another IP(s). So as to not put all their eggs in just a few baskets, so to speak.

Remember with the 360 they had PGR, Kameo and Perfect Dark.

If nobody is working on a new Perfect Dark I will be so miffed.

It deserves a worthy sequel and I don't understand why MS would just abandon it.
It isn't too similar to Halo or Gears and does a lot of things differently. How many other sci-fi espionage FPS games are there out there featuring a female lead? The gameplay could be different enough to really make it stand out from the pack but the concept is still 'normal' enough to have mass market appeal...

MS should wrangle the rights for No One Lives Forever and get Rare to make some kind of "origins" game or something.

I have no idea why that idea popped into my head just now.

Pretty much.

Man an open-world Perfect Dark would be so good ala Deus Ex/ODST.

Not only that but PDZ was a very solid seller and made money back when it was released.

@TheOddOne Since you collected all that data, do you know who the studio heads are? It would probably help to predict the direction if we knew the creative leads on the project and their track record. (Maybe it was already mentioned but there is too much to read through)

This is all I can find now:

343 Industries - Bonnie Ross (Ex-General Manager at MGS publishing);
Black Tusk Studios - Mike Crump (Ex-Senior Development Director at EA);
Rare Ltd - Craig Duncan (Ex-Development Director at Sumo Digital, Ex-Studio Head of Midway Games);
Microsoft Studio Victoria - Edoardo De Martin (Ex-Studio General Manager of Next Level Games);
MS Studios LA - Shannon Loftis (Ex-Studio Head of Good Science);
London Lift Studio - Lee Schuneman (Ex-Studio Head of Rare Ltd);
Lionhead Studios - Scott Henson (Ex-Studio Head of Rare Ltd);
Core publishing - Mike Ybarra (?) (Ex-General Manager for Xbox LIVE and Windows 7).

All of the Europe studios are being overseen by Phil Harrison. Don't know who oversees the US studios, but I would have to guess it has to be Phil Spencer.

Might update this later, no promises.

Ruffian taking shots at Bungie :lol

Also they said to be on the lookout!

Ruffian teasing is making me smile. And lol at that stab - probably was because people responded to the teasing.
Tease some more Ruffian and we can make a thread ;) We got Ruffian staff in here afair.

What are the odds that they have something that will be shown for the PS4 reveal?

It's a theoretical possibility, but there's nothing suggesting that it might happen. For what it's worth, all the released projects that they've worked on so far have been published by Microsoft (unless I'm missing something).

Something new from Ruffian would be nice.

I loved Crackdown 2 but I'd love to see what they could do given a bit moe time.

Sounds like they are near to announcing something.

Interesting.

According to their Twitter, Ruffian was hiring for the Senior Coding position since Jan of last year.

Could this be another sign that Crackdown is in the air?

Their staff numbers is really low though. Since last year people have left for Ubisoft and other studios.

One hell of guy to promote to doing first party marketing. Also intresting to see it reference the Gears, kind of confirms that it will go on (I know, DUH).

Also looks like they are going in full force.

Well, he's probably also referring to Gears of War Judgment for Xbox 360.
I love how he's listing one AAA game after the other, then suddenly ends with Once Upon a Monster.

I'll not hear a single bad word said against Once Upon a Monster. Easily the best Kinect title I've come across outside of Fruit Ninja Kinect.

I hope we more from the IP next generation.
