PS4 Controller - Dualshock 4 Unveilved

Hmm, is that a proprietary headset jack?

Headset jack is standard, the proprietary connector there is for "headset control" that Sony uses on a lot of other audio equipment.

I finally got a chance to look at these high-res images and am really impressed by all the features.

The grip, the touch pad, the speaker, the light bar, improved triggers, better sticks. Good, good, and good.

It looks like a top-notch Logitech controller from the mid 2000s, which is nice for the hardcore... but it's a bit less sophisticated looking from what I imagined. Most people probably wont even notice.

Yo, I can definitely dig it.

I mean, I'm not saying that "artistically" it's the prettiest thing ever conceived by man, but it looks the part for a gamepad.

I'm cool with this being the new DualShock(tm). :D

I actually really like it. It took awhile for the prototype to grow on me but this is really nice. It looks really good too. I like the two tone look. Pretty pumped for it.

I'm so glad the asymmetrical sticks rumors turned out to be bunk. Seriously, I can live with asymmetrical sticks but I just think they are such a stupid design choice that doesn't suit all games or provide any tangible benefits.

looks great. i was expecting another 'boomerang', very, very, very happy with its look and functionality.

I'm so glad about the inclusion of the speaker, in particular. i know that might be negligible compared to it's other features, but personally i'm glad it's there. I hope sony fully utilise it.

Very interesting design with the rotary bit, while also being so boxy/angular. Not sure what all the grills are for, noise canceling directional mice or something?

Also, worth noting that this is our first glimpse into what the PS4 will look like. They won't be shipping this thing in every box and have it not 'fit in' with the PS4 look and feel. PS4: more edgy and boxy than PS3, but shiny like the phat, mixed with matte where it counts.

Will be interesting to see it at E3.

It looks pretty cool and comfortable. I like the textured grip. Not a huge fan of the glossy elements. I'd be concerned about the triggers being the point of contact that the controller lies on like, it seems like it might break if like you sit on it or something.

Can't agree with the "ugly as fuck" comments. I think it looks bigger than the current DS, which is a step in the right direction. Functionally it has a lot of stuff added, which is very welcome to me. I just wish the grille covered a mic instead of a speaker, and that the Dpad was more Vita than PSP.

With all this extra stuff packed in you think they'll maintain the $50(give or take 5) price point? I get the feeling it might go up a bit, but no more than $60 if it happens.

Really hope a 3rd party release caps to cover those truly awful concave sticks. Other than the terrible sticks the controller looks fine. The handles look like they are much more comfortable. Not sure about the flat triggers though.

It looks like the nicest controller the first parties have mustered, but the return to a separated dpad from the dev one, sucks.

still trying to figure out what you'd use a touchpad for with no screen
Internet browser, certain navigational elements such as maps in a game or puzzles, etc.

Why the L1/L2 and R1/R2 letters are written upside down?
That's what i've been wondering. I think due to the fact that the "chins" of the structure are removed and that the buttons are more visible to the user than before, they chose to flip it for user-readability.

Only part I hate is the speaker part, absolutely useless and not needed, will be turning off in the options menu day one. It was a dumb thing to have on the wii remote and it's the same here.

The hardware revealed so far doesn't have that signature "Sony" look to me, not a big deal though. I won't be looking at the controller a ton.

Ok my mind was just blown when looking at the controller at an angle. what if the center piece of the controller can be removed with new attachments that can be placed in the middle. A qwerty keypad, a small lcd or the stock mouse track pad. Additional add-ons could be sold separately. Damnnnnnnn that would be genius.

Controller looks great to me. And not only did they make the thumbs sticks concave like the 360's, but it's all grippy all over instead of the 4 lines that sort of help but ultimately fade with use.

I've seen some horrible controller sticks for both 360 and PS3 though at kiosks though. Like they were so worn down they were shiny and not grippy at all. Maybe all those finger oils combined did it. =o

I disagree. I thought the same at first, but (if they are smart) they could use it for notification alerts or trophy stuff. Being able to separate all those sounds from the game audio physically, by using a different speaker, could actually be a great advantage. Especially with this 'always on' type system, your controller could make a sound alerting you to a download or update being done for example, even if your system is in standby mode/TV off.

Just a thought.

Not really digging the new look. Touchpad placement on the controller looks weird. Where is my Sony logo?!
On the back end where it belongs;

The Controller:

1) Should have had an indented Guide button like the Move to avoid possible accidental presses
2) Should have had triggers like the Move, unless these are really good
3) Would have liked to see that light run around the perimeter of the touchpad, as it would not only be a more convenient indicator, but it would also be damn cool.
4) I find the ends of the handles weird, because of where they decided to end the textured design

The controller looks a little weird at some angles, but I couldn't care less. For example, it looks "cut off" at the top, as if the face could have been taller above the touchpad.

Find it weird that they got rid of Start and Select in place of Options, but whatever. Analog sticks look a lot better, DPAD presumably is that of VITA?, and I like the textured parts

It definitely looks incredibly comfortable and makes the Dualshock look archaic actually, as I do not see how I could ever go back once I get my hands on this.

I'm curious as to this Rumble 2.0 they talked about, and I want to know about the way touchpad is utilized.

I also find the spacing between the sticks to be a good distance further, which should please some of you, yes?

I doubt that would ever happen, it can already roughly accommodate two of those functions and you wouldn't see any meaningful support for an lcd screen that was optional. Plus removable parts on something that is used as much as a controller is pretty big risk for frivolous gain in this case.

Looks like a MadCatz controllers or something. =/

Functionally, however, it looks better than the DS3. But goddamn the DSes were beautiful.

/is a sucker for good aesthetics

Edit:

Okay, from the back it looks pretty nice.

Not me. Ever been online in a lobby and you hear someone come in from taking a leak and all you can hear is them banging and scratching and adjusting their headset on their head?

...if the mic were on the controller, you'd hear those kinda noises all the time, non-stop, from every single player while playing a game.

I'm kinda disapointed that the touchpad is not a touch screen. A touchpad seems really useless to me in gameplay situations, but at least it's not intrusive, if it sucks like the sixaxis function did, we'll just forget about it. It should be neat for web browsing though. But I think a real touch screen would have been really neat for exploring menus, putting shortcuts, typing texts, etc... It seems like a missed opportunity to me.

I'm happy that they've finaly changed the shape and the trigger, I hope it's for the best!

What I would really wanted though, would have been an improved Move/NavCon combo, with a second stick on the Move unit and some other surprise. I really like that two separate controler thing of the Move/NavCon and Wiimote/Nunchuk combos. But the gamers have spoken, they hate waggles :(

Ya, you might have a point. I was thinking more of a small screen that could be used for plays in sports and item screens and alerts. Oh well. I like the controller. Wonder if the share and option buttons will be able to turned off some how so people with larger hands don't accidentally press them.
