Knack (PS4) Announced

That art style is absolutely atrocious.

What's his face seemed upset on stage that the audience didn't respond with more hype, you know, the chief hardware architect or whatever. Seemed like a pompous dick to be honest.

"MY game I'm developing :)"

Audience: ......

I've been saying this. If when Nintendo first showed off the Wii U, they showed that trailer and said it was a new platformer they were working on, people would lose their shit.

1.) Maybe that would happen because Nintendo knows how to make 3D platformers really well.
2.) I'm sure the people calling this game generic/boring/whatever are not the same that play Mario games.
3.) As far as I know PlayStation gamers have mostly been the ones calling Nintendo games kiddy and lame.

From what I've been seeing around the net the ones disappointed with Knack are mostly the ones that expected Killzone or whatever great cinematic experience they wanted to watch first with PS4 graphics.

Wow, people really see what they want to see....

The audience was clapping and he said it felt really good to finally be able to show it.

Yeah, WHAT A POMPOUS DICK!

Why does this game have to be a flop? With the right type of *advertising* this game could be right up people's alleys. Especially if Sony's launch is saturated with a sea of shooters. In a sea of shooters Knack will stick out.

In fact, I can see Knack as the type of game with legs that sells better abroad in Europe and Asia than it does in the US.

There is a market other than the shooter market folks.

the designs of the humans and goblin's face could have been stylized better IMO.

Some say Dreamworks but I say direct to video type CG movie type characters.

Gameplay wise it looks fun, but I wish the characters would have better designs personality wise

Yeah, the main character needs to be redesigned. It's not a very likeable character design. Needs to be cuter.

I have many of the same thoughts. Hopefully they will tweak some of the characters. Knack looks great, it's everyone else that is the problem.

No, CGI. There's only one short gameplay part in the trailer and I'm not impressed.

Really, that doesn't impress you? :S What is it missing other than what Violater says, which I agree with, although it's not really a problem but it definitely would be nice.

My only problem is the foliage has no physics reaction to the blast.

Maybe cloud shadows on the floor. Needs more sunlight too I reckon.

This is really not the type of game that sells well at the launch of a new console when these will be mostly going to hardcore gamers and sold out through Christmas. Now 1 or 2 years in when this in the hands of younger owners of PS4s at a lower price point is when something like this should come out. Sales-wise it will do bad as people will be buying Killzone and the next gen quality versions of Call of Duty, Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs, the next gen sports games, and whatever else 3rd parties are cooking up for release.

And I think that this game will get quite a bit of marketing since it's Cerny's game. He's extremely important to Sony now. So it wouldn't make sense to just drop this without any marketing.

It's also nice to see Japan Studio getting out there right from the start with the PS4. Hopefully they've been patched up and will be a much bigger force on the PS4 than they were on the PS3.

The guy seemed really passionate about his work. That alone makes me want to play the game. Knack and Infamous are worthy pick ups for a day 1 purchase of a ps4. Just need 1 or 2 more exclusives besides killzone.

It looks fun as well :)

I don't care much about the story elements and the cutscense.

But that gameplay, like you guys said, Jack and Ratchet feel. I will play for fun and gameplay and skip the story.

i wanted platformer action fun, this is it

You guys do remember that we saw more footage during the brief UI showcase, right? Showed Knack running up a winding road, dodging an attack before punching a goblin...

.gif it?

I've gone from lukewarm to pretty hyped for this. If it and Infamous come out this holiday, I will have a PS4.

in this q&a he talk a bit about his time in japan with sega and sonic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiboVZsXYXY

not sure if he's involved in game design process, but he's responsible for hiring Yuji Naka to Sega US branch after Naka got fired as soon as Sonic 1 ships because development trouble and over budgets.

Yuji Naka then continue making Sonic 2, 3 etc

edit: Sega stuff start at 37:50

This was a great listen.

To be honest I wasn't all that impressed with the game with the initial reveal mainly because it was the first PS4 reveal and I was expecting something along the lines of Killzone or some other game with BOOM EXPLOSIONS, BAM GUNSHOTS etc. It was a very subdued game to show as your first reveal.

After rewatching the trailer I can't help but want to see more. It was the most refreshing game to me out of everything in the conference.

Honestly something about this screams stylistic blend between western cartoons and traditional japanese comic styles blended together.

I dig it. It has a... well.. universal vibe to it.

It also reminds me a little bit of puppeteer. I wonder if the same character designer is working on this too.

Its a good thing seeing the western devs working at SCEJ studios. The clash of 2 cultures and mentalities. It could really help bring a unified vision that caters to both asian and western gamers.

Indeed. Plus, it's the kind of game that would appeal much more to the broader audience. I hope this isn't the only game he directs.

I hope they have a good comeback. They were basically quiet the entire generation. :(

Yeah, some of the designs could be better, but I like that it looks more like a CG movie than a video game (in a good way). I'm not sure how to describe it, but it has a pleasant visual consistency that current games are missing. I'm really excited to see what other developers can do with a more cartoony style in the upcoming generation.

I can understand some of the "generic" comments with regard to the gameplay, they didn't show much, but what was there did seem very reminiscent of a B-tier 3D platformer. Hard to judge from just the one trailer, though. The concept has potential to be a lot more than what they showed.

It's pretty cute. Seems kinda like a game that's made to show off specific features of the console and the hardware. The gameplay gave me huge "Lego Starwars/Batman/Etc" vibes.

From what we have seen of Knack this could be true. We didn't get to see enough gameplay footage to know what type of gamer Knack is exactly trying to appeal to.

However, once new details and footage starts rolling in I believe a lot of people around here will recognize that a game doesn't need to have guns or battlefields in order to appeal to the hardcore gamer.

theres actually quite a bit of hidden footage in the show right after the trailer, in the little video boxes, you can see he has a reflective form that reflects the bullets and stuff. game looks pretty fukn great.

Again, there's a bit more gameplay that I'm surprised people aren't talking about.

At about 24:55, and 25:30. It's not super-clear, but it gives you an idea of what the game is.

Later on during David Perry's talk, there's a bit that's played on the Vita too. ... that part doesn't look interesting or fun at all though (enter this vent and run in a short U-pattern), so let's just hope it's only in the five minute tutorial.

who's your avatar?

There's something about this game that screams "PSone era" to me, and I don't mean that in a bad way. There's something about that era that loved the idea of whimsy, and it's lovely to see a game using the PS4 hardware that has its foot so firmly planted in the idea of a whimsical, cartoony game.

I feel like it hails from that bygone era of Jumping Flash and Medieval.

It also happens to have the added benefit of being a FUCKING MARK CERNY GAME.

Looks like an incredibly charming game, and one that could be a hell of a lot of fun. Will most likely be picking it up at launch to offset the killing and death of KZSF.

It also looked good on that Vita remote play demo, from what I could tell on the stream.

good spot. looks very ratchet and clanky there.

Well thats what Cerny said before introducing the game. He says he wanted people to get that feeling they used to get when playing PS1 games back in the day.

I'm going to be surprised if this is a launch game. For now I get the impression Killzone and Drive Club are the first party launch games.

Knack is one of those super early, not so impressive games that will be overshadowed at launch except for a couple super hardcore Sony people who simply have to get every Sony game and it'll be forgotten a couple months into the console's life cycle.

At least that's the vibe I got from the showing and initial reception on GAF.
