Knack (PS4) Announced

What makes it generic and bland? If it is generic, what is it copying? if it is bland, why does it look bland? And why are you criticizing 5 seconds of a character beating up an enemy?

From what I've seen from the combat there are a lot of open hallways and sterile landscapes to journey through. By generic I would mean the simple beat em up gameplay of just pressing the 3 or 4 button combinations to inflict damage with no real combo system in place for depth.

Like I said, it's very early so there is a lot of time to improve. Just at the moment though nothing is really there to wow or impress me for a next generation title.

Again, there's a bit more gameplay that I'm surprised people aren't talking about.

At about 24:55, and 25:30. It's not super-clear, but it gives you an idea of what the game is.

Later on during David Perry's talk, there's a bit that's played on the Vita too. ... that part doesn't look interesting or fun at all though (enter this vent and run in a short U-pattern), so let's just hope it's only in the five minute tutorial.

Quoting myself for a new page, since I think most people ignore me usually (which is pretty smart, really).

We literally saw a total of about 10 seconds of gameplay with him running down a hall and a hillside road. And all of the gameplay shown was either shown as thumbnail video or off screen on the Vita.

How do you know the combo system of this game at all? This is pretty ridiculous. You think the game is generic because you've assumed it has generic components that they haven't shown at all.

I mean come on, just look at those bland hallways man. I'm not trying to be harsh on the game but from what I saw it just screamed rushed and incomplete.

Looks like Sony's Kameo.

This looks really good. We're getting close to Pixar quality somewhat. I can't wait to see what Ratchet and Clank will look like.

Exactly. I don't know because they haven't taken the time to show us any of that. The game wasn't ready to be shown (my opinion) and I find it incredibly perplexing that they gave us a big reveal CG trailer instead of actual gameplay footage.

After watching this trailer again and reading up more on Cerny my interest grew, this certainly have potential to be a neat game. Kinda like a throwback to Crash/Spyro on PS1.

I think the main character's running animation reminds me of this guy.

Man how far we've come graphically.

Seems like no one is really hyped for this game, but I honestly found this to be my favorite game shown at the PS4 conference. I like the bright colors and the Pixar-esque art direction. It's nice to have a game not grounded in reality.

This game just looks so good, I dont understand why people were knocking it, I guess because it was the first game shown next gen but you can see its a gorgeous looking game.

You don't understand why people knocked it? Probably because all the gameplay looked like walking down super restrictive paths, hitting things. It looks like a first generation playstation 1 game on a design level. Maybe it will be good, but there is no reason at all to think it would be based on what they showed.

That is not CGI. It is realtime.

lack of new information also. needs more really.

This isn't even close to current Pixar quality visuals, maybe 10 year old DREAMWORKS style and quality, but stop kidding yourselves.

Yeah, it was strange...I can understand why they showed that segment on Gakai, because it didnt look to intensive, but even the real which was shown on the big screen (which wasn't that clear to see) wasn't showing anything too interesting. The trailer on the other hand looked good, and the snippets of gameplay therein looked nice too....

It has the likeness of Ratchet and Clank and Katamari, but with it's own vibe. In which sense, I think it will have personality and great tech to boot. One to watch for sure.

It'll probably be close enough for a lot of people.

the trailer was great and hilarious, the gameplay segments they showed during the vita remote play demonstration looked way too early and contrived and lame.

hope it's a third person action platformer...we need more info

so now every game has to be open world game otherwise it will suck?

I personally dont care about Knack so far, because it doesnt look appealing to me and i was never into platformers, but in general, I have to find one open world game that I like.

So lets hope that not every game and genre turns into open world just because they technically can.

This thinking how next-gen games have to completely change the gameplay or they will suck is really making me wonder wtf is going on anymore.

I was mostly impressed by this. not gameplay but I wonder how close they can come to pulling this off in gameplay.

Didn't Mr. Cerny play that section on the PS Vita?

I think most of the gameplay we saw was realtime, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.

This looks like a game that could be a lot of fun because it isn't the norm. If for no other reason, it'll at least give the feeling of old platform days. That's what I took from the reveal at least. There's probably a lot more to the title than we've seen so far, obviously. Time will tell

The main thing that looked really rough on the snippets of gameplay they displayed was the animation. Obviously it is early, but it currently looks nowhere near some of the better efforts form this gen. I am sure it will get brushed up before release though

Ten seconds of gameplay footage. If that. Any game could look super restrictive and basic in that amount of time.

Holy hell, what happened to being hopeful about games. To giving the developer the benefit of the doubt. To understanding that a trailer and snippets of gameplay can't begin to show the depth of the game. All gone in this new era of cynicism.

I'm looking forward to this game more than any of the other currently announced PS4 titles. I think it has a lot of potential.

So what if you're walking down set paths? A small number of people bash Super Mario Bros. for it, but that's how you play the game, that's how its meant to be played. Different gameplay for different games, not everything needs to be an open world sandbox.

No, that's not what's wrong with next-gen, that's what's wrong with people on forums. I say it's a tiny narrow area, you say I demand open world. No, I would like a game with a wider play area than Crash Bandicoot. That hyperbole is embarrassing.

Well no, it wasn't ten seconds was it? They probably show ten seconds in the trailer, the live demo probably showed 30/40 seconds, later in the show they demonstrated the live streaming to friends technology, and they showed maybe another twenty seconds worth. Is a minute to little to write off a game? Of course, but I think it's enough to show an indication of the game design, and what they showed looked crap.

Well I completely disagree that it's enough to give you an indication of the game design. I'm not sure how combat works. What the environments are like. Nothing. I know there's a Katamari-esque component to things, which is intriguing, but that's about it. Walking down a hallway through lasers is not nearly enough to show me that the design is crap.

And of course there's not enough there to say it's gonna be great, either. But I'm interested to see and know more.

Don´t shoot me, but I´d rather play this than KZ4. Just love games like Ratchet, Jak and Sly.

I agree. I love the fact PS still has so many charming platformers in their lineup. This looks like it could be something new and interesting, and the screen shots above where he is made of glass look really good. Too early to judge, want to see more of the gameplay.

That seems somewhat harsh to me...it looked rough and rather basic, but it did not seem like their was any real gameplay reveal. But yeah, the snippets of gameplay they showed outside the trailer were puzzling, didn't exactly inspire confidence. They should have shown the trailer only.

So let's see:

M a r i o
S o n i c
S p y r o
C r a s h
K n a c k

This game is poised for success. :D
Don't kill me lol

I'm not saying the game is crap, only what they showed, if the game is actually good, and not what it looked like, that's great, but I don't think it's anyway unfair to judge a game based on what was shown.

I hope it is good, while I think Knack himself looks stupid, I like the look of the other characters, and the world, it'd be cool if they're in a game I find appealing.

Fair enough, I don't have a problem with Knacks design, although I think the name itself, 'Knack,' is not particularly catchy. I honestly believe though that they should have just shown the trailer and left it at that. If they were going to reveal gameplay they should have done a live demo. The context and nature of the footage shown did the game no favours at all.

Having said that, I am still interested considering the genre.

Looks great to me, this game is not all about NEXT-GEN look, doesn't need sparks coming out of its ass, it's all about the physics of game play. Looks like a fun and charming title made by a legendary game designer.
