It comes out the day I fly out for PAX East. Will the downloadable version be available on the 19th? And can I download it in the States if I have a Canadian account? Not sure how that works since I've only downloaded Crimson Shroud.

Really hoping they are doing a printed guide as well, as I was more interested as a collector and hoping for something even remotely similar to the Japanese guide. If they only go digital I won't bother, as there are already plenty of digital 'guides' out there that aren't going to cost money.

For anyone else, that is completely new to the series, I can see how a nice official digital guide might be worth paying for.

How much underwater fighting is in this game? Cause that part of the demo was... not so fun.

Of the 50-ish big monsters in the game only a few live underwater.

Underwater fighting IS more stressful, but I love it because it's portioned out so well. You only have to do it now and then but it reminds you not to take things for granted, makes you sweat a bit even when familiar with weapons and monsters. It doesn't control bad, it's just harder to do everything, to move where you want and react. Forces you do plan differently. If there was a lot of it, yeah, it would get tiresome. But it's just small pockets of fear spread around the game.

I am brand new to the series but having one or two fights underwater would do a good deal for variety.

I mean, this is a terrible analogy but in Mario Kart 7, I think of the game if it was all on land and while it wouldn't miss a ton, it's cool to spice things up even if the water levels don't do a whole lot for the gameplay.

So far I have really enjoyed the demo. That being said, if I had to complain about something (not even really complaining) is that I didn't expect the game to be segmented into a bunch of smaller areas. I was kind of expecting an open world, so that was a bit of a disappointment. That being said, a small issue and i don't feel like it really detracts from the experience.

If there is no mechanic reason for it (there could be, I haven't played the game long) I wouldn't mind if they opened up the world a bit in future installments.

As far the design of the maps go, the game isn't about roaming around exploring big environments to be immersed in. You only go through them to gather items and track down monsters to hunt. When monsters run away, you have to follow them to another area of the map. However, you can take some shortcuts to certain areas or alternative routes. Also, when you die in battle, you're sent back to base camp where you'll need to run back to the monster's location. Seriously, it would be annoying having to run for 5-10 minutes to another area just to track down the monster if the environments were as nearly as big as the ones in say, Xenoblade Chronicles without convenient warp points. Although, having the map areas be segmented gives you the opportunity be in a safe zone away from where the boss monster currently is, so you can easily identity where the bosses is since each area of the map is labeled by a number. Also, boss monsters are limited to the possible areas each of them can travel to.

When you're running, it drain your stamina meter, but its also an important element to the battle system. The development time probably wanted to design the maps so it strikes a balance of the game's main concept of hunting and gathering without having players be too distracted by the sense of freedom to explore. After all, the game does have a timer unless you're playing in free hunt mode. Anyway, MH3U features noticeably shorter loading times than compared to say, MH Tri on Wii, so that's a relief. Maybe with MH4/MH5, Capcom can make traveling through the segmented maps appear to be done in a more seamless manner.

I usually detest 3D, I play my 3DS 99.99% exclusively with 3D turned off and I'm absolutely happy with that - all I ever wanted was a DS2. Other than the times I briefly switch it on 'just to see' then quickly thinking wtf is this I can't even see properly and turning it off again I couldn't give a crap about it.... but the 3D in MH3 is actually ok.

There are a handful of games where I can sorta see the appeal and this is def one of them, Capcom seem to know what they're doing with it. But still, I just hate moving slightly then losing the sweet spot, too much outside effort and brain power and messing with my eyes over something I don't care about so I'm always just back to 2D and normal happiness. :p

I liked the water segments in Tri but didn't miss them in P3rd.

The coverart is terrible. It's also the first time the Hunter is not even looking at the monster lol.

Rathalos makes for a good companion yo.

*Secretly can't wait for them to add monster buddies to replace Cha-Cha/felynes in MH5*

I wouldnt say its terrible, but yeah, it feels like a step down.

I just dont understand why they went this route when this looks equally baddass:

EDIT: OOOOHHHHHHHH. I finally get the dick in the box gif to the replay under my first post. I see it, but surely the could have just gotten another angle?

MH almost always has horrible cover art, in my opinion.

Back when Dos was coming out, they used to do these like... glamour shots of the environments, just stills at good time of day, weather, etc. Square always does something like this for FFXI kit as well due to very strong environment art.

I always wanted to see a box covered in stuff like that, granted not that it matters since i'll see the box all of ten seconds during my ownership, but still.

It looks like there's around 17 underwater-based boss monster quests from the Village and 32 quests from the Guild. Some quests involve fighting more than one boss monster either on land and/or sea. In addition, some bosses include fighting 2-3 of the same type of boss monster. Hope you like fighting Plesioth !

Original MH Tri is one of my favorite boxarts in all of gaming.

As said before from a marketing perspective I think it was wise to snub Bracchy as the cover star but I do dislike the hunter looking away.
