Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate announced for Wii U/3DS, coming to West, no 3DS online

First time trying the bow and I'm really liking this weapon. Took down both demo monsters with it fairly easily. Plesioth is particular is easier with a fast ranged weapon since I can hit it while standing out of range of that freaking tail spin move while still being able to doge pretty fast. Does the switchaxe work differently than it did in Tri? I can't seem to pull off the charge burst.

You!

Are you going to play on the 3DS or Wii U?

And I think SA is the worst weapon ever so I don't know, did you ready the manual?

Hey, where you been? And how dare you say that about my favorite melee weapon! Switchaxe is awesome! I'm playing the WiiU demo and haven't seen a manual.

I think Switchaxe was improved in the PSP games and then thus this version.

The manual for most games can be found if you press the home button and on the right will be a green book labelled manual.

On the subject of the demo I have come around to really liking the GunLance =D

Ah yes, the home menu. I never seem to remember it's there. I'll have to read the manual later then, thanks.

I keep going back to trying out the Gunlance...for some reason I really like the concept of it, but with the moves at your disposal with it I just can't seem to actually get any better at using it. I don't know if it's just me or not, but I feel like the backstep is a lot slower or doesn't respond as well as it does with the Lance. GL feels much less mobile to me. I guess it's alright though, I'm already happy to take on the Hunting Horn as a new weapon style (to me) and back it up with one of my older standbys, probably the lance or bowgun.

Just thought about something: Wouldn't it be cool if developers could link game specific profile data to Miiverse profiles? For example, if you play MH3U, the system would attach your Guild Card to your profile, accessible from either the profile page, or directly from individual posts in the related community board.

It would be quite cool, but you're gonna have to wait for the next game (If they do one on Wii U) and as long as it's specific to one console they may make the effort to implement a similar system.
What's wrong with the SwitchAxe? It's my favourite from the demo.
Bad memories from Tri I believe XD

who said 60fps for the Wii U version?

It looks like a stuttery 25-30fps based on the demo.

Now the 3DS version! Whoa. 60fps at times and with 4xAA in 2d mode.

i dont have any chance to play the demo but i thought it was 60fps on the WiiU?! "stuttery" sounds bad....

Can't decide on getting a WiiU just for this or sticking with the no-online 3DS version. $299.99 is a tad too much. ;_;

will there be any difference in the loadingtimes whether i put the download on my external HDD or the internal flash memory?

that japanese article gives me nothing but funny gibberish in Google translate.

Depends on the speed of the external storage you use. Here's a Japanese loading time comparison video with the disc, the internal flash, an external HDD, and an external SSD. The internal flash and SSD are slightly faster than HDD.

$299 for a box of awesome is not bad. You can feed it with both MH3 and NSMBU for a powerlevel of close to 9000. Imagine what happens when Pikmin is out? That's right, Wii U transforms into a familysize deathstar.

Great find! This is exactly what I was looking for. Seems like the retail disc loadtimes are fine, but there IS a slight improvement when running from the internal flash or HDD/SSD. Especially when previewing armor sets...I think I remember Tri being really bad for this.

Now I just need an answer to whether you can route all game audio to the gamepad headphone output.

Man, we need to stick to one thread. If I hadn't checked this one randomly I wouldn't have seen that video.

Asked in the other thread but figure I'd ask here as well in case someone don't read that one. Are there any offline/single player videos out there for the Wii U game?

Would like to compare it Monster Hunter Tri just to see how different things look. Trying to decide if I'll go through with the purchase now or wait a few months. Seeing video of normal gameplay and not just online monster hunts might help me finally decide since the demo hasn't.

Seems there are multiple profiles allowed.

Every speed run video online is a guy playing offline.

How do people think this compares to the Tri demo?

I've played this over and over again whereas I only played the Tri demo (which I paid money for) once. That's not to say I didn't like the Tri demo, I just wasn't compelled to touch it after that one time.

The demo is the stupidest thing ever. It convinces everyone hwo was already going to buy the game. It does absolutely nothing to introduce people to the series, it is possibly the worst marketing decision I've ever seen. Its great for me, I can try out all the new weapons before I'm in the game and don't feel like I'm wasting time. EXCEPT I WAS GOING TO BUY THE GAME ANYWAY. Every friend that I've had take a look plays it for 5 mins, dies, and is like "wtf is this?".

Couldn't they setup some situation where you accompany a Seasoned NPC hunter who teaches you the ropes as he guides you through fishing, cooking, then taking on some velociprey, with a finale of fighting a velocidrome with him? Instead you just appear in some unknown area with 2 weird cats. You have no idea what the controls are, or that youre supposed to grab items from the box. You have an unintuitive interface filled with items you have no idea of how to use. Youre then assaulted by a boss when youve never even unsheathed your weapon. The boss may be easy, but you don't even understand the controls, UI, or what your items do yet, let alone how to fight a boss. The boss then proceeds to kill you, then you proceed to uninstall.

I'm just really really bad, that Lagombi or whatever it's called destroys me.

I was using the Gunlance because it looked the coolest lmao.

seriously though, the game does have a steep learning curve and the depth is better appreciated as you climb it. you WILL improve as you play it with some thought and effort put in.

in any case, I'd still recommend that you pick the game up after some price drops if you are uncertain now. ;)

I actually think it's worse then Tri's demo. Mainly becuase while you had to fight the Great Jaggi in Tri's demo it was slower then the rabbit type moster in Ultimate's I believe. You could tell when he was about to attack easier. The bird monster as well I think was easier then the second boss in the Ultimate demo. Underwater fighting takes a while to get used to. In the main game you can practice doing it at your own pace and it doesn't just drop you into it quest wise against a boss. Someone with issues with the controls would need more then 20 minutes. Though the Tri demo did have the issue with that bird boss calling in another boss during the fight I believe.

I'l probably pick it up, I just get discouraged when you guys are talking about this stuff like its a walk in the park, and when I saw somebody post a picture of that Monster Hunter 3 guide with over 1000 pages, I almost pooped my pants.

In regards to the demo, I also didn't like how when you get knocked back you sometimes get knocked into the other area and have to go back in and reload it. The only time I've played Monhun apart from the WIi U demo was with the original demo that came with DMC3 on the PS2 lol.

cool. lots of people have been expressing this frustration in the demo thread, it's completely understandable. as much as we call out publishers for not taking risks and playing it safe when making games, we should also take our own risks in discovering new games. i'm not saying you, but all of us, in general.

and yeah... try not to fight near an area border.. lol :p

I finally pre-ordered it with Lego City and Luigi's Mansion 2 (+ Harmo Knight).
My March gaming purchase is done now.
I won't be able to play that demo again soon :(

I liked what I played. Although I had no idea what I'm supposed to do. Unfortunately no online on 3ds is instant no buy for me. It looks like a game that's must be played with others.

That kind of demo would be very expensive for them to produce, but probably worth investing in if they truly want to reach NA

Given what they have to work with, a demo similar to the one for Etrian Odyssey IV would have been ideal. Give players access to the offline tutorial and 1* quests up to the Peco fight, and let them import the save to the retail version of 3U.

The issue with this is that Tri's first ten hours are terrible and barely touch the "hunt gigantic monsters and wear their head as a hat" aspect of the game, which is what the demo we got was supposed to be about... maybe 4 will be able to finally get down a proper cold open to the game.

Oh come on, it would not be that expensive at all. Some scripted events and text box pop ups is all they need. it could be the actual intro the game as well as the demo. Either they want to reach new player, or they can continue complaing about "western" audiences. The real difference is in JP when people play crap demo like this their friend is there to explain it to them, in US people get the stupid demo without any human there to filter real guidance to them. It could be done by a competent intro with NPCs if they so desired.

Did we ever get an explanation from capcom why the flagship monster isn't on the covers in the west? Why go rathalos again when brachydios is menacing and new?

I agree that the offline tutorials are worthless. It's a bunch of pop up text boxes that will contain text that you'll need a microscope to read (given what text looks like in the demo) punctuated by old man grunting noises.

Then you'll be guided along worthless activities like killing weak monsters whose only purpose is to provide meat or the absolute lowest level materials possible for making anything. Getting repeatedly destroyed by actual monsters is actually a better introduction to the game than what serves as the tutorials now.

I'm not really that sure the 1* quests would really sell the idea of the game that well either, though.

Like I said, just trying to offer possibilities given the shoestring budget allocated to a NA/PAL demo.

I'm not even sure how one would structure a cold open to Monster Hunter. The recent games have made the flagship monster crash your 1* quest to instill that sense of OH FUCK OH FUCK IM GOING TO DIE into you, but it's missing the other half of the equation of MH's "draw", where you go and completely mulch the monster next time you encounter it because of how much you have physically leveled up in skill. It's something that's difficult to convey in a 20 minute demo of the game to disinterested players.

EvilMario

Will QA for food.
Running players through the beginning of the story in single player wouldn't really solve the issue with the demo. It would give people a chance to learn the controls a bit, but it would then have people complaining about how boring the demo. It wouldn't solve the issue of people complaining about 'tank controls', or other things like 3DS camera.

In this sort of demo though, they should have at least had a splash screen that lets you see the controls. Or simpler access to controls, rather than just throwing you in.

So if I found the demo baffling I still shouldn't necessarily be uninterested in the final game? I really want to like Monster Hunter.

Either rent MH 3 Tri for Wii or buy a used copy at GameStop so you can return it if necessary and try that version out. You start from nothing and build your way up buying or forging better weapons and armor. Going on hunts not just for monsters, but gathering ore or mushrooms for the village and basically easing you into the game. It's great. By the time I fought the Alpha Jaggi, I felt ready to take him on. This is the way the demo SHOULD bring you into the game. Even if it's just taking a few 1 to 2 star quests from the guild sweetheart (that's her name).

Again, either rent MH Tri for Wii or find it used at Gamestop for under $20. If you like it, great! Go for MH3 Ultimate. If not, return the used game. No harm, no foul.

Edit: I JUST KILLED THE PLESIOTH!!!!! On 3DS no less! I feel so awesome right now. XD
