Think disposable razors vs blades. Camera companies get you with the body and screw you with the lenses. The profit margins must be huge!!! I find i hard to believe that a F1.2 50mm lens costs 16x more than a f1.8 lens - since optically, it is not night and day between the two.
Back in the good old days Kodak only make ISO 25 and 50 films for the mass. Therefore its important to have a reasonable priced f/1.4 lens to take picture in the dim light.
Nowadays a 1.4 lens also need to be sharp so its a more upmarket lens.
The camera makers also don't bother to make cheap 50/1.8 standard lens anymore so the 1.4 is really not that much more expensive.
The 1.8 is for DX cameras and the 1.4 is for FX cameras
So if your camera is DX is there really any benefit to having that lens over the other one besides the lower aperture ?
Dude you are comparing a 4 cylinder Civic to a 6 cylinder Porsche. The cylinder count is not the reason one car is more expensive than the other.

Ordered a D7100 at my shop, and got a Nikkor 18-200 in perfect condition, with a great UV filter, for 300. Will get a Tokina 11-16 with that. Can't wait

Besides the quality differences, using FX lens on smaller sensor means you are only using the sharper part of the lens (the center area).
Yup. That is an excellent reason to always upgrade your glass before you upgrade your body.
However, I believe the recent reviews suggest the new Sigma 35mm 1.4 blows both Canon and Nikon 35mm flagships out of the water.
in lightroom 3, I'm seeing some vignetting from my m4/3 camera. I read up on lens correction and it seems like this is done automatically by lightroom - no need to check a box or anything (I also tried doing that and panasonic lenses aren't listed)
I'm shooting RAW+JPG so how come my shots still have vignetting - is that something not automatically corrected for?

I use lightroom 4 and when I first installed it I noticed it did apply automatic lens profile corrections on imports, but I disabled that behavor. I noticed it was flaky at times and wouldnt always get it right for my t1i and some of its lenses.
To manually do it go to the development tab, and about half way down the right side of settings you'll see lens correction where you can choose the manufacturer and model of your lens (or just select auto) or you can manually correct the vignetting with the slider.
Thats all in 4, not sure if its the same in 3.

So I'm starting to do some product photography for friends - ie. items in a lightbox/tent. However, I'm pretty much stuck using my 18-105mm VR kit lens that I got with my D90, which, while ok, is leaving me a bit wanting.
Is this kind of photography a good application for a macro lens or not? Even if every shot isn't 1:1 macro photography I figure it might be better to have one on the camera as the shoot continues when we get to something that needs much closer detail work.
If a macro IS appropriate here can anyone recommend a decent but affordable Nikon macro lens? I'd prefer a full-frame lens since I'm hoping to upgrade from DX to FX by the end of the year (probably a D800) so have stopped buying DX lenses.

My problem with this spec is that it matches directly with the DP1, as if it was designed before the X100. You get the 28/2.8 lens, which is fine. It's very hard to make wide angle lens faster and small. You also get the 16mp sensor. That's a little "2-year ago" compare to the rest of the Nikon line up. The X100s also has a 16mp sensor, but its a modern sensor with no low pass filter so the resolution is effectively 10-20% higher. It also has no EVF, which is again, like the DP1. The control as far as I can tell it's kind of P&S-ish. The only saving grace is the hotshoe.
I think its a $600 camera, make it 700 with Nikon tax. If its more than 700 its too much.
edit: also, "Coolpix A"? terrible name! I completely lose interest.
Has anyone a NEX-5N (or 5 , 6 or 7) and a Sigma 30mm f2,8 and can give some impressions? It's dirt cheap atm (around 95 at Amazon).

According to The Verge it's $1,099.95. Not sure why anyone would get one of these over the X100 other than brand loyalty. Optional optical viewfinder is $449.96(!).
I'd like to see one of these large sensor fixed compacts come out with an equivalent FOV of 50mm.
EDIT: From DPReview: The Coolpix A fits a 16MP APS-C CMOS sensor with no optical low-pass filter behind a 28mm equivalent, F2.8 prime lens.
Crap, I would have been tempted if the price was right but that is way too much. I quite like the styling of it and it would have been nice as I could use my speedlight on it (even with its stupid name).
Just way too expensive for what it is if the speculated prices are right.

I have the Sigma twins. What do you want to know. I would recommend the 19 over the 30. 30mm/2.8 is a bit slow.
I haven't done any comparison bwteen the 19 and the kit lens.
Guys, I have recorded videos on my Canon 60D some months ago but I can't transfer 2 of them to my computer and I am gonna format my card today. Is there a way to transfer them to my computer if the standard don't work? Somebody suggested something months ago but I can't find his post.

isn't the 19mm more for wider shots? 30mm seems good/versatile to carry around all day and make pictures of friends. Going to make 19mm vs 30mm testshots with the kit lens to see what focal distance fits better to me and as always on. 30mm is around 20 cheaper atm, too so i'm still leaning more to the 30mm
I use wide lens more. My brief impression of the Sigma 19 is that its not particular smaller than the NEX 18-55, it doesn't feel it AF faster either. I might try out the 30mm for you over the weekend. (Just borrowed a Nikon 180/2.8 from friend so I know what I am going to do over the weekend.)
Here is a NEX street lens group shot to give you a sense of the size. The E16 is really small, I can put it with the camera in any jacket pocket. Not so for the 19mm and the 18-55.

I got the Sigma 30mm with a micro 4:3 mount; it's the same lens except for the mount and crop (2x instead of 1.5x). For $100, it's really hard to beat. It's not a pancake but it feels solid despite being very light. It's incredibly sharp and has a great OOF rendering.
My plan was to get used to the 30mm focal length in preparation of the Schneider-Kreueznach 30mm f/1.4 that is coming out for the mount, but I might just stick with this.

Just recently. I'm lucky that we have a good store like Sammy's in LA but B&H is selling them as well. Got a 67mm for my 70-200mm f/4 L. They are phenomenally built and look great.
oh. I know nothing about cars either ._.
I need to learn about all these different types etc. A lot lenses has a tons of different initials after them. Some I don't understand.

I'm interested in getting a bridge camera, more specifically I was interested in Sonys DSC-HX200V, and now I'm interested in the newer DSC-HX300B model. I love the form factor and the ultra zoom abilities. I had a chance to play with a friends older DSC-HX100V and it's nice, but the quality of the images are pretty "meh" and I figure one of the reasons is likely due to the relatively small sensor. On the flipside I'm in love with the image quality from Sonys DSC-RX100 camera, but I would want the form factor and zoom of the HX300B.
I'm hopeful that one day Sony will merge the best of both those worlds together, but I'm unsure of whether that may ever happen, or if technological reasons prevent them from doing so. So my question to you GAF is can bridge cameras be made with larger sensors like the RX100 and still manage to maintain the same level of zooms as the HX300B (ie. 50x optical) and quality of the RX100? Am I foolish to be holding out for that one day such a camera may exist? Obviously no one knows if Sony will ever do it but them, but I figure at this point the way they've been going with their camera business, they're probably the most likely to fire out such a device. I have no doubt that even if they could make such a camera that it'd be bloody expensive given the prices of the cameras I've mentioned already. I think I'd be willing to spend upwards of $1000 or so for such a camera though.

Yeah, I had no doubt the lens would need to be larger, but I suppose I was hoping that using a 1" sensor would let them keep the lens somewhat reasonable.

Wow is this a joke from Nikon? This is the best they could do for $1100? A used X100 is starting to drop near $700, and it's creeping up to the X100s price. The worst part is the wide angle, A 35mm f/1.8 lens like the X100 would have been much better, I could have forgiven them if they had went with a more usable lens.
Is there by any chance a trusted site or sites that sort of gathers and tells you what lenses are worth used/refurbished? I know things can fluctuate. I'm thinking if buying a decent zoomlens and I want to make sure I'm not overpaying or anything if buying used off craigslist. Don't wanna lowball the seller either ~_~

got a fuji X100 delivered today figured it was finally the time to pick one up, what with the X100s making the original drop to a little over half the price. was thinking about getting the zeiss 24 1.8 for my NEX-7 but this lens is practically the same for less money and with an incomparable camera body attached. i used the S at CES and while the focusing does seem much improved (along with the menu button), i don't think it justifies 50,000 yen extra.
so i think i'll be happy with this! AF is actually a lot better than i expected/remembered from using it around launch, so it seems the firmware updates did make a difference.

There is one, Fuji X-S1 with a 2/3" sensor.
If you are obsessed with super zoom want to take creep shots on the beach, I recommend Canon sx50, the IQ is not much worse than XS1.
You just want to know the fair price for a lens? Use completed search on ebay. The fair price is really what the market think it should cost.
Or you can check out keh and adorama's used listing. I think ebay sold price is more accurate.

If I was in the market for a superzoom I'd also check out the Panasonic FZ-200. It has a 35mm-equivalent 25-600mm lens with a constant aperture of f/2.8. This fast aperture, along with the OIS, will compensate well for the sensor size and give you the ability to do some depth of field work.
