So the difference of a L-lens and non-L lense of a 100mm is that (in Canon's case) it's waterproof and has rounder bokeh balls?
Someone watched Digital Rev. I would take their opinion with a grain of salt.
The L 100mm is superior in terms of optics and more importantly Image stablization. Allowing you to do 1/10 shots in low light, with a crisp sharp focus that you cannot do with the non L 100, without a tripod. The rest, such as the red ring, weather proofing, faster focusing are secondary.
To me, if you can afford the L, then go for it. It's superior in everyway. If not, the non L does a great job at a fraction of the price! It makes a great portrait lens and can do macro.
