Gaming GAF, do you judge others by their avatar?

I try not to but I do it anyway.

When I read a post that goes like "X franchise from Y company sucks" and they have a Z avatar.... yeah.

Yes it's the outward face you are presenting to GAF, so it has some connection to you as a person. That said, I don't allow it to discredit what you are saying, but it can call what has been said into question.

Well, it's clear you're a Xenosaga fanboy, too....

And proud of it lol!

To be honest that whole Zelda/Tifa avatar thing was an experiment. It was during PS ALl Stars pre-release (around the time of the Kamiya rip off comments). At one point I was defending the game wearing Tifa and was accused of Sony bias. When I was highlighting some misgivings with the game in the discussion group sporting Zelda the same thing happened. In the end I just reverting back to KOS-MOS...

So yes I'd say a lot of people will at least partially judge people solely on their avatar. I'll personally only notice it once I see a repeated opinion of a user, and a matching avatar that comes with

Sometimes. If I read something that's incredibly fanboyish, then I'll take a quick glance at the avatar and chuckle if it's a mascot for the company being defended.

I hate to say it, but yes I do. I can't really take anyone too seriously if he's, say, defending something that's also his avatar.

Outright judging ? No, very rarely so, unless I see the avatar as offensive (to me, not to a supposed moral standard).

But unfortunately, while trying every day of my life to be an open minded and tolerant person, yes, some avatars are irking me and I often don't really like the poster attached to it.
Now is it a coincidence or the reflection of someone personality, don't know.
I don't think the process is really unnatural, though. When you visit message boards multiple time each day, if multiple times each day you are faced with a pic that you really don't like...

For example, if you go into a thread that's about some bad news about Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft, and you see a person defending them that has an avatar from one of the companies, do you dismiss what they're saying due to potential fanboyism?

I wish I could say that I didn't, but I find myself doing it from time to time. I just want to know if I'm the only one.

In theory you should just read the post and not consider the poster, as the old adagio says.

In practice, an avatar is a choice made by the user. And often knowing that they will be judged for that.

Anything related to console wars I usually do...I just can't help it. I am sure if I was in a Bob Marley thread defending him(how could anyone not like Bob anyway?) some would look at me as completely biased.
which I am

Yes.

Though not necessarily in the way the OP means.

I mainly just assume someone's stupid and horrible if they have a bad avatar. Poorly cropped, screwed up proportions, a person making a stupid face, a white background when it could easily have a transparent background... stuff like that.

Just an identifier for me. Don't particularly care what people use, as it could be for an assortment of reasons.

Case in point: The character in my avatar is my username which also happens to be a personal nickname, so it just seemed to fit. (Although I don't hate Mass Effect)

I have a slight prejudice against people with JRPG/Anime avatars, especially female ones when the poster is a male.

I bury that prejudice as much as possible, and do my best to not affect me in any way, but I can't help immediately feeling it.

I found that most people with anime/girl/loli/whatever you wanna call it are some of the nicest, most tolerant people in GAF. Yes, I just judged a whole segment of this forum. (after reading their posts, of course.)

It's because behind the scenes we're secretly plotting to world the world and we don't want people to find out!

It's only a matter of time before everyone gets an anime/girl/loli avatar!

Why, you...

I always read the posts anyway but sure, if somebody has a very platform-specific avatar then that weighs on how I treat their post in my mind. I specifically try to avoid using an avatar like that for this purpose.

If someone came up to me with a Jesus T-Shirt on and said "I want to talk to you about abortion" then I'd have a pretty good idea where they will be coming from before I actually hear their message.

I know some people are hung up on not judging based on appearances but as long as humans have eyeballs that will be a pipe-dream.

Yup. Based on the thread I'll know how full of it they are by simply looking at their avatar before I read their post. And it's worked 100% of the time.

Actually, as an amendment to my above post, it's pretty much any male with a female avatar. If you post in transgaf, that's a different story (and good on ya). But a heterosexual male with a female avatar is just completely perplexing to me.

I love my avatar, it's from my favorite artist so why should I care what other people think? Though at first I did have a picture of myself, but it felt weird to use on this website in particular since hardly anyone else does the same.

what about a female with a male avatar?

Part of the reason I haven't changed my avatar in a long time, aside from just liking my current one a lot, is that I don't want someone to ignore/discount my posts just because of my avatar.

I plead guilty, but I really like Akihiko Yoshida's artwork and the games that his work is used in.

Plus my better half was dressed exactly like the girl in my avatar the day I was approved by GAF and was setting things up. She was sitting across the room reading a book and I had a CD with this art right on my desk. It was uncanny.

I don't get some of your reasonings. So if I have a God of War or Mario related avatar, you'll take my posts regarding the game less seriously?

For the record I hate Sunshine, I already had one person assume I like the game because of my avatar.

I just like Hideo Kojima mostly because Metal Gear Solid 1. When I played that game and some Enemy managed to read my Memory Card Saves, then I "had" to Switch my Controller for Port 2 to "avoid" something I won't spoil here. It was a great game and the soundtrack was very nice.

---

I do not defend Consoles/Games/Companies and never been in a Console-War. I'm always polite. I've never cursed, not even one single time on GAF and you won't see that next to my name, I always say please or thanks in advance when requesting help and almost address all the GAFfers by fellow GAFfers. I always help others when possible. I also do not judge someone by an avatar.

Do you disliking or hate the character in the person avatar if you don't like or hate the post that person made?

No.

If someone judges another person based on their avatar on a gaming forum, I would hate to see how judgmental they are in real-life scenarios.

Not the kind of person I would want to associate with.

I take the time to actually read their posts, because that's what you should be doing on an online forum.

Only if they have no avatar at all.

I think we can all agree that those people are hiding something.

If you have an anime avatar, I just can't take you seriously. I'm sorry, I just can't. The medium has become synonymous with pedo culture, so even if you only like good, wholesome anime like Ghibli stuff or Bible Black, I'm still going to judge you as someone who not only tolerates such disgusting behavior, but also potentially takes part in it.

Oh, without a doubt.

An avatar's an identifier. It's something a person likes enough that they want it to be the "face" for their posts. If somebody decides to use that space to "fly the flag" of a particular console manufacturer or company, I expect them to be somewhat biased when discussing the object of their affections (or that company's competitors).

If you pick a character from a particular game/anime/whatever as your avatar, I figure you're either a fan of the game/series they're from, a fan of the character specifically, or you just really like the artist's style.

I also tend to identify avatars with posters after awhile, like a lot of other people here. I went without an avatar here for years myself, and I've noticed more people replying to my posts after I broke down and finally made one. (Though I should probably change things up and switch to something else soon. Not sure what yet, though.)

So if I have a God of War or Mario related avatar, you'll take my posts regarding the game less seriously?

Not necessarily regarding that particular game. But if you had a God of War avatar and you are posting negative or dismissive things in the latest Durango thread then I would assume some people will discount your opinion because you would appear to be a fan (boy) of the opposing team.

Not on Gaf. That being said, if your Xbox live avatar looks like a Juggalo, or is wearing a tophat, then you get kicked from my friend list.

Just changed my avatar for the hell of it. Feel like I should go bump the Red OT or something.

I use avatars for recognition only, though in the right context they can make somebody seem like an extreme fanboy.

According to GAF your avatar represents what you prefer to masturbate to, so I'm disgusted by all of you.

Used Arima Senne as my first avatar here. Then switched to RE6 Leon but apparently liking RE6 was perceived as being a sheep and a blind fanboy, so I switched back to cute anime girl avatar instead.

I'll be honest though, unless it's gaming related, I have no idea where about of 75% of avatars come from. Except blame_space, he's perfect avatar quote material.

Well, that works.

good, wholesome anime like Ghibli stuff or Bible Black

EDIT: Fun fact, last anime I watched was Lucky Star and Death Note when they were "new".
