Gaming GAF, do you judge others by their avatar?

I think the argument having substance is more important than who's saying it.

It's really easy when you're trying to stay on topic and avoid personal attacks. Ignore a bad post; respond to a thoughtful post.

what about a female with a male avatar?
It's not that I think any one way about that, it's just that as a heterosexual male that tends to care what others think of him, I don't get the ability to use an anime/loli/female avatar. It makes me cringe thinking of doing it myself, which leads me to the prejudice. At least, that's what I think may be the case after some introspection.

GAF has to be a vast majority of males right? So if a female is posting with a male avatar, I probably wouldn't even know it to begin with unless I got to know the person.

Again, I want to clarify, this is just first impression level prejudice. Not like "I think you are a piece of shit, and there must be something wrong with you". More like 'inability to understand, and empathetic (though probably misplaced) shame'.

That probably still sounds condescending, but trust me, I get that it's a personal hangup.

where's the dere!? ;_;

Then angelfly shall forever be kurisu.
The dere doesn't exist when anime avatars are involved!

Too late, you've been judged!
I meant the fact that your last one was removed.
Nooooo stoooop

But I know, right?! How could I NOT be able to use this?

Prejudgement based on appearance is lame.
I'm a black guy.

I see avatars, tags, and posts come together to form that poster's identity, mostly for my memory. Reading posts in the voice of the avatar is also fun to do from time to time.

Yep. Feeling lots of shame here.

I don't disassociate my online presence from my real life though. Maybe that's the source of it.

If there's a high enough correlation definitely, but I noticed it's not always bullet proof.

I.e there are people with Nintendo avatars who have a high degree of hate/ignorance to them.

I don't judge based on avatars at all -- what's a bit of harmless fun on the anonymous internet? -- but they certainly make it easier to remember posters. Sometimes when familiar posters change their avatars abruptly it can be a little jarring.
Yep, definitely.

Besides, I have always wanted to ask you... has your avatar something to do with how you get to play the PSP quite a bit for traveling a lot?

I can't even imagine what people think of me because of my avatar. I just thought it was a unique pose and perfect for an avatar. But I can't tell you how many PM's I get asking about it.

Part of that probably just comes down to a difference in perspective.

I may associate someone's avatar with their posts, but to me, that avatar isn't necessarily what the poster is supposed to be representing as. I guess I look at it as more like a virtual t-shirt. Some guys wear logo tees, some guys wear t-shirts with characters they like (male or female), etc.

No I don't. But I also don't take part in console threads so I guess I don't see some of the more blatant correlations that end up happening.

Everyone should have a Pokémon avatar. Then I could easily judge you and your opinions based on that.

Honestly, I don't care in most cases. People prove their worth on a forum by the content of their posts, not by the silly picture under their name.

Before he swings the bat, a real slugger imagines an arc inside his heart arching directly to heaven.

Or something

I like to judge based upon the content of their post but after a while, you start realizing what posters go with what train of thought and start looking at their posts with caution or just ignore them altogether so you don;t have to deal with their horrible posts.

Man, after reading some posts, I just had to go and try to fix the ratio/cropping thing on my avatar which reminds me: How do you read this post in the voice of the necklace? To the people who read other people's posts in their avatars. Maybe I have a bad imagination, but that doesn't always work. D:

Avatars help to remember someone, so when I see one got changed, it can throw me off a bit unless it is consistent with the older one. I don't judge people based on their avatars, but avatar quotes are hard to resist sometimes. Not in a bad way.

Fake edit: and now the avatar looks worse..back to fixing.

i look at the avatar only if the actual content of the post is suspicious ...

If something is suspicious i look at both the avatar and/or the tag.

I'm always worried that people who are not familiar with Advance Wars won't take me seriously because they will think my avatar symbolizes 'Bam NeoGAF we fight for the videogame industry amirite guys' or something dumb among those lines, instead of the simple NeoTank/NeoGAF pun that it is.
