Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

I thought the cold-open intro to the game was actually pretty well done. I don't think the actual game looks very good, but they clearly went into it with a poor attitude.

That walking dead quicklook is some jaded, cynical shit. If you're not going to even consider giving a game a chance, why bother covering it at all?

They did give the game a chance. They hadn't even read Alex's review at that point. There are several moments where they say the game does something interesting, and they open the quicklook by saying they're going to not pay attention to what everybody's been saying about it, or something.

That quicklook was fair; if anything, it wasn't harsh enough. Did you work on the game or something ? You shouldn't be acting up for something so trivial. The game had it coming; it's a piece of shit.

No, I didn't work on the game, nor do I agree with you they gave it a fair chance, they absolutely go in thinking it's trash, and spend most the first half talking about the TV show and the other walking dead game. My issue isn't the quality of the game, it's Brad and Patrick's attitude.

That was my first reaction too. But it's a shit channel because of its crappy reality shows and documentaries and shit, not because of its drama output, so I wouldn't write it off completely.
This topic moves fast so I'm a few pages behind (on 100 posts per page!) but yeah, this. They had that zombie thing (never seen it), and they also had Being Human and The Fades. Unfortunately the BBC seem to have cut the budgets on all these drama shows, so Being Human just finished and The Fades didn't get a second series. Both were great. Being Human has an American remake with Sam Huntington and Sam Witwer but I've not watched that, mostly because the early episodes were almost remakes of the originals and that's kinda weird.

Work is hard and Jeff and Ryan are kind of lazy

Its why the output for subscriber videos normally takes a dive after few months after the BLLSL. Its why encyclopedia bombastica stopped happening after 3? episodes. And yes its why they don't do ER's yearly and why if they do one again it will probably be for a 8 hour game or something dumb.

Without a Enduance Run or something similar watch as they have no video content between May and Mid august outside of e3 just like last year and the year before.

Yeah. I wasn't going to say it, but it does feel like this. I mean, Ryan totally stopped doing TANG, and it never came back despite him saying it would.

TANG relies on the existence of a sizable number of video game movies. Ryan isn't a Hollywood development executive.

There's a few he hasn't done, mind. I'd love to see those.

I'd also like to see Jeff/Vinny do an episode-by-episode Persona 4 Animation TANG. 5 minutes or so per episode. Would be amazing to see them react to the differences/nods. Especially how
the main character has a shadow.

I think (WU)TANG stopping was more down to editing time realities rather than Ryan's own decision.

Those videos (as well as video reviews) take Vinny or Drew 1-2 working days to complete. With such a tiny production team, I think they're making the right choices of long-form live content over short, tightly edited features.

Here's some of the more depressing/hilarious material in TWD's comment section:

Fucking Patrick strikes again...

Spoilers on the TellTale game.

Spoilers on the fucking TV show.

Pushing his fucking hipster opinion, every chance he gets...

Seriously, i'm done, i'm not a Patrick hater, for the hell of it, like some ppl, but i'm just tired of his fucking bullshit, i don't want to have to deal with Patcrick again, so from now on, i'll just avoid all the content with him in it.

It's a shame really, this website has the chance of being really fucking amazing, but Patrick just brings it down to the level of any other gaming website.

Yeah but they don't put his name on descriptions of videos most of the time because they know there's a lot of people who won't click if they do.

Well, if the GB crew is that aware of the problem with Patrick, and not only doesn't do anything to change it, but totally ignores it, and even tries to conceal that fact, so the ppl who have no intention of watching any content featuring Patrick, still click on their content...

If that's true, that's pretty fucked.

Good thing there are still people sharp enough to see through GiantBomb's plan of tricking people into watching Patrick QL's. It's unethical, that's what it is.

There wasn't really any bad spoilers about the other game or the TV show that I noticed. Arguably Brad gave the only real spoiler when talking about the future of Clem.

and this is terrible. We need to get a kickstarter going for a movie adaption of some game, written and produced by Ryan. I suggest a live action Persona 4 movie.

That's crazy. Patrick gets a lot of undue shit. I'd be an anxious wreck if I was getting constant haranguing like he gets.

There was something good to come from the comments though - someone spotted a mouse pointer around five minutes into the quicklook that seemed to have been rendered into parts of the game's opening credit sequence. Check the top right corner at 5.04 and 5.12. How does stuff like that sneak in there?

God, I do not envy anyone who works at GB if that's what their users are like.

Nah, I wouldn't say that's representative of their whole userbase. However, the combinition of Patrick saying the TWD comics suck + the appearance of Patrick in the first place brings out the ugly in the comment section.

I've been looking through the community spotlights on the GB forums and there's some pretty cool stuff in there.

That is absolutely hysterical. I can only assume that backdrop render was screen captured at some point in the process to save time. Perhaps they all were and just ballsed up that one.

There has been a massive influx of assholes when Giant Bomb moved to CBSi. It's one of the reason why I just don't go on the Giant Bomb forums that often anymore. Despite what some say, GAF is much more civilized.

And the Patrick bashing has got to stop. He blends in with the Giant Bomb crew perfectly and is not any different than them. He's doing a great job.

I do agree that the silly trollish comments should stop. Valid criticism does however not have to stop, which often gets brushed aside as bashing. He does blend in well with the crew, but it truly annoys me when listening to the bombcast or anything else where he interrupts everyone 100 times while they are in mid sentence, with the danger of sounding like an asshole myself now : it really makes me dislike most of the stuff he's in.

Patrick often seems to be the only member of Giant Bomb who's genuinely interested in gaming and the (sometimes disagreeable) culture that surrounds it, not just the games he already knows he'll like. I consider him a blessing.

Just browsed through the comment section and the overwhelming majority are reasonable comments. Also, the comments criticizing the Patrick-winers vastly outweigh the actual winers.

As usual, it's just Gaf cherry-picking the bad apples and presenting them as "the GB community".

The thing is I'm not sure he does that a lot. I never notice it and everytime one person mentions it, I'm like: "really ? He does that ?" After all this time he's been with the gang. So I'm not sure that it's that big of a problem.

If you told me you didn't like Leah Alexander for the same reason, then it would be a different story.

Maybe they have, and they just think he's an asshole now.
For what though? The only criticism Ive heard about him that seems sort of believable is that he interrupts people a lot but he's worked on trying not to do that. I dont see how that makes him an asshole, he seems like a pretty nice guy.

It wasn't my intention to position this as 'the average GB users', but I can see where you're coming from. Editing my post.

As you can see, I said these comments weren't representative of the userbase a few posts later.

Absolutely. And if he's serious about being a games journalist/interviewer on camera I'm sure he takes constructive criticism very seriously. I've sat in editing rooms with presenters and those guys are their own worst critic, analysing every word they say and mannerism they have in order to get the best interview possible.

He's a fantastic adittion to the crew. His knowledge and interest in the indie scene and the more businessy side of gaming, plus his willingness alongside Vinny to try out more niche titles and figure out why they appeal to a certain audience, make the conversations they'll have in more long format content much more dynamic and interesting. He's almost the only one who will contradict the others when they voice clearly uninformed or lazy opinions. I don't think however that he's a very good critic, and he tends to resort to hyperbole way too often the way most people on message boards do ("this sucks, is terrible/incredible/amazing/meh"), rather than nuance his analysis the way a professional critic should.
But I guess some just find his snarkiness a little too grating.

He did that in the Ken interview and mostly answered the questions for Ken. Maybe be even answered the question by Jeff to Ken.

So uhh... it's gonna be a very interesting Pax panel...

So. That just happened. @jeffgerstmann & I paid $100 each to get @taswell to drink breast milk given to him by a random audience member.

Personally, I wouldn't go as far as to say I dislike most of the stuff he's in, but specifically the interruptions that bother me involve his tendency to want to summarize someone else's point in different words, while they are still trying to make it.

I think his willingness to try and actually play to completion a lot games the other guys don't seem at all interested in, adds a lot to the site, so it doesn't bother me as much as it does for others but it's a habit I think he's having trouble breaking.

I like him too, everyone can be disliked though, some people just rub people the wrong way, for all sorts of reasons, there doesn't have to be some objective fault for people. I'm sure the most irritating person you've ever met still had plenty of friends, some people like them, even though you don't, for example.

This is the one criticism I just can't really understand. Maybe I'm just incredibly oblivious to this kind of stuff, but I just can't notice it. Any examples?

His magnificent facial hair makes a lot of people jealous.

I'm guessing it's.

1.) He's the newest.

2.) There's a age disparity, and he didn't grow up with the same things the rest of the crew did. No WWF memories, no love for the G & R.

3.) He looks like a hipster, he plays indie games, he writes articles about feminism.

4.) Overexposure, for a while Patrick was in everything.

I wish bad stuff would quit happening to him, dude almost got killed from a pothole ffs. He kinda gets
