Wii U Satisfaction Thread

Had a chance to play Sonic Racing Transformed on the gamepad. Question... To those who know...is it supposed to be blurry on the gamepad screen? I guess I was spoiled with the Vita's version but the game seemed blurry and a little washed out on the gamepad. I know the console version is sub-hd, does that have anything to do with it?

Anyway, I can tell the Wii U version has more detail in the textures although Vita is super crisp and clean. But framerate is much better on the Wii U. I guess you win some you lose some.

NSMB U looks great on the gamepad.

Racing Transformed seems to have one issue and one peculiarity on the pad. Issue is that the gamma is off. Peculiarity is that they seem to be throwing extra blur on the gamepad, just because. These are my impressions from the demo, anyway.

Had mine since Christmas. Because of my self-imposed "$40" rule at the beginning of the year, I haven't really bought another game other than ZombiU and the NES eShop games. Not complaining since I have plenty to play other places, and when the time comes for the games I want dropping down to the $40 threshold, I'll happily scoop them up.

Sounds nice. In Denmark the good Wii games never hits $40. There's really no incentive to wait , other than you can get lucky buying them used from someone who's oblivious to the actual value of the games.

Im considering getting a Wii U for my 30th Birthday in May.
Since im not entirely convinced i'll ask GAF: should i get a Wii U?

  • recently became father of a little girl
  • therefore gaming sessions limited to ~ 2 hours a day
  • never had a ninentdo system before (started console gaming with Segas Master Sytem)
  • no love for wiggle gameplay, looking for comfy couch gaming
  • local multiplayer (for that rare casual party play) welcome
  • no other concoles at hand
  • would prefer to buy used games
  • own a decent 1080p gaming pc (i5 2500k, radeon 7850)
  • located in europe (germany)
  • never had much love for eastern gaming/jrpg
  • love open/exploration based games
  • love rpg, fps, action and racing games
  • graphic whore / no love for 2d (sprite based) games / side scrollers like Trine are fine
  • getting tired of uninspired lazy game design (CoD X, Crysis X)

What would you guys recommend?

If you hadn't included this, I'd say look into a 3DS. But since you did, I'll let others convince you one way or another.

It's not a problem at all. The display is great. I've played it mostly on the GamePad and had zero issues with it.

With this point in mind, I'd recommend either a PS3 or a 360, by virtue of the fact that they both have extensive back catalogues of games, and are (currently, at least) graphically on a par with the Wii U.

On the balance of the 2, I'd say PS3 for it's better variety of 1st party exclusives and the massive benefit of PS+, which will pretty much give you a library of games to play from Day 1.

True but he says he is time poor and just wants to game on the gamepad. Which is definitely the way to go if you don't have much time!

Great feedback, thanks. I'm pretty sure that Nintendo is very keen on keeping the GamePad as an integrated part of the user experience. So it's probably just something we gotta live with.

I think I'll get the Pro controller. After all, it sounds like it's a decent piece of hardware.
Yeah, any faults the Pro Controller has is really with the OS or individual game, like some games can use it but must have it selected with the gamepad first and some games can't use it at all, but anything that can use it the Pro Controller is great with it.

With the deals going on around everywhere at the moment, try to get a Premium Pack.

You will get NintendoLand for your casual parties local MP.
Darksiders II if you missed it; Everyone is pissing on it but in the LTTP thread, many people is also enjoying the game even with its flaws. You can get it sub 40€ new, sub 30€ second-handed I think.
ZombiU is still the exclusive you can enjoy, and is cheaper and cheaper.

I don't understand your two last points, you are a graphic whore but tired of classic game designs? You should consider some eShop games to try something new and expand your horizons. For 10 or 15€ max, you can end up liking something you never thought about before.

Finally, first Ninty system? Consider the Wii backlog, but once again, there will a problem if you can't evolve yourself over the "graphic whore" thing ^^"

The most important question: what do you think about the games that are already out and those that have been announced?

It might seem overly cautious, but I think it's worth going for one of the Nintendo recommended drives just to be safe: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/sy...general_info&submenu=wup-external-usb-devices
That's what I did, anyway.
I agree with this. I bought a Toshiba Canvio Basics 1TB drive, HDTB110XK3BA, and for one, it didn't come with a y cable, needs a y cable on the Wii U because the Wii U's USB ports are so woefully underpowered as it doesn't need a y cable on my PC, and was just generally a pain in the ass to get set up because now I had to order a y cable and ultimately since I didn't like losing the other rear USB port I ended up buying a USB/Power plug and an extender cable and plugged the other end into my power strip. I would have much preferred something that just worked with a single cable and wish I had bought something from the list, it would have been a much more elegant solution.

it's probably fairly obvious that Amazon would have some great prices, but I was pretty surprised at how many Wii U titles are discounted over there. Almost everything has at least a $10 savings. Nintendo Land for $40. NSMB U $10 off.

Do you guys think they will fix the overscane issue in the Spring update? :(

Also......I just remembered about the deluxe digital promotion. How could I forget! I hope I'm not too late. I've already bought some stuff off the eShop. Gonna research how I view the points I've accumulated and stuff....

Thanks for your suggestions so far!

Yes.

You'll be amazed how much easier it is to play with that extra screen in the living room.

Yes, being able to game while the wife watches her favorite show is indeed highly attractive. Though i still want the majority of my playtime on the big screen if possible.

I don't understand your two last points, you are a graphic whore but tired of classic game designs?

I could /should have left out the graphic whore bullet point in a Wii U Thread i guess. ;)
I'm very well aware of the systems limitations and that i won't be seeing the graphical fidelity that a PC or a PS4 might bring to the table. I'm also not that much of a graphic whore that i swallow shallow gameplay in favor of stunning graphics as well (in regard to "classic" game design).

What i was trying to say: I'm not into the art style of, lets say a Zelda WW or Dragon Quest X. I'm worried if a bigger chunk of upcoming games might take that direction.
I don't necessarily need a very mature art style in my games, but i do love to see some fancy graphics like Trine 2 or even Rayman Legends has to offer.

The most important question: what do you think about the games that are already out and those that have been announced?

Well, the selection is still quite limited but there are some games that i'd like to play.

- Zombie U
- NFS MW
- Lego City Undercover

I'm actually kinda curious if i could like a game like MH3 or Xenoblade since i have never played those kind of games. I would welcome another Endless Ocean with open arms as well, love underwater based games! Ubisoft has some interesting AAA titles down the road like AC4 or Watch Dogs, so thats good to know. Project Cars is obviously awesome as well! I just hope that there will be more 3rd party developers that bring quality games to the Wii U cause i don't think that the 1st party titles can keep me entertained...

I guess i'm just worried that i'm betting on the wrong horse again, been through that with my 360 and those awesome exclusives the PS3 had.

But my alternatives are kinda limited since my wife likes the idea to "work out" on the console with the balance board. :)

Is GTAV Wii U already off the table? ^^

Holy cow you guys, there was some update for NFS MW which I just got today, and it took 5 minutes to INSTALL the update after it was downloaded. This is ridiculous.

You should wait until E3 to make your decision. You will then know more about other next gen systems and see what else nintendo has to offer as far as games go and third party support.

As far as work out games, the Kinect fitness games are far more of a workout than wii balance board. It's basically like watching a fitness video but it measures your movements and you get achievements etc. (as much as I dislike kinect I feel that the work out games on it and dance games are pretty solid).

GTA V was never on the table for Wii U. So it is off the table unless Rockstar says otherwise. This is why you may want to wait until E3 as well.

am I the only one who expects a WiiU Nintendo Direct this week? I mean, "launch window" ends this weeks and we have like zero release dates for outside of the launch window (besides ACIV and Lego Batman).

edit: also the last one was in january, so bimonthly march would be the next. I know there were a few 3DS ones, but a man can hope

Maybe one in April definitely. I expect Pikmin 3 and W101 to come out in May/June respectively.

Wait, I can't play Donkey Kong Country or any other Wii VC games I've bought? Also, why were they de-listed from Wii?
Oh boy, they haven't communicated this well. You can play any of the VC titles you bought on the Wii on your Wii U if you transfer them over to your Wii U, which will remove them from your Wii, but you can only play them while running the Wii U in Wii mode, which means no gamepad support, you'd still need a Wiimote+whatever attachment you prefer.

However, Nintendo has started re-releasing some Wii U VC titles, with one a month at 30 cents of your local currency that do support the gamepad and can be played from the Wii U's normal mode as opposed to having to go into the Wii compatibility mode. Nintendo says they plan to eventually bring back most of the Wii's VC catalog to the Wii U, and that at that time people who already own those VC titles will be entitled to rebuy them at a discounted price, around a dollar or some crap, for the privilege of playing them outside of the Wii compatibility mode, gamepad support and Miiverse functionality.

I think I'm trading BLOPS 2 for NFSMW, I'm getting tired of COD. Any impressions from you guys? I've read good things but i'm not sure.

It's a damn good game. Well worth the price of admission. Just bear in mind that the controls are digital for gas/brake and it takes some getting used to for sure. Make sure you check out the thread and add some peeps, we've got a good chunk of folks to Autolog it up with.
