There's a part where the protagonist leans out of a high speed moving vehicle and with one hand aims and fires a grenade launcher at an expensive, military grade helicopter that couldn't hit said vehicle in previous encounters. This all happens in slow motion while Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart plays.

In real life the helicopter would have shrugged off and laughed at the 40mm grenade hitting it.

Then again in real life all of those guys would have been dead already since the havok would have started to shoot them from 2000+ meters using thermal optics.

They would have literally no idea where they were getting hit from.

It cracks me up that it's getting the "current gen gameplay" and "I wanted to go into the distance and explore the city and do some shopping the the local mall".

Let's just make a world simulator amirite. I wanna be able to steal a truck and transport merchandise from city to city between military missions. Maybe even stop by and get a job selling T shirts in chinatown.

You completely misunderstand the argument against scripted corridor shooters. Enjoy the illusion of these 'open environments'.

yeah who would want a sandbox open-world military game where you can play civilian roles if you wish

such a game would be a huge failure

Confirmed reports of cars getting flipped the fuck over!

Michael Bay simulator indeed.

Graphics look good. Gameplay looks shit. Premise is probably shit. So many things in that video are just wrong.

- Every team member somehow survives a barrage of bullets dead-on from a fucking chopper.
- 50ft drop, still alive with concrete on top.
- Guy lifts concrete up and saves protagonist.
- For some reason can't lift other piece of concrete even a bit.
- Lol @ cutting the leg sequence.

Then again, it's Battlefield campaign, so I wasn't expecting much in the first place. Shit's laughable, honestly.

Regarding the graphics: Looks very similar to BF3. Yes, it's an upgrade, but not a world's difference. Looks more like things were added here and there rather than an overhaul (which I wasn't expecting, anyways). Not the jump that Crysis 2 --> Crysis 3 had. Water most definitely had a huge upgrade. BF3 water was utter shit.

......You are funny

Human, believable storytelling

Looked great to me, but I'm easy to impress. I was more intrigued by the tension they managed to create. Will definitely play this on one of the next gen consoles.

Graphically stunning, but fairly uninspiring gameplay. Sad that I was more excited about the last few seconds of ingame footage showing more interesting levels in Shanghai [?] and the aircraft carrier.

Amazingly realistic graphics, disappointingly unrealistic and over the top everything else
The only part that felt too absurd to me was the building crumbling and all the America Fuck Yeah dudes surviving.

I'm really hoping this is PS4 footage.

No real-time reflections in the water? Lack of POM, or Tesselation? and the fact that the scenes at the end were much nicer looking. I hope this was on a dev-kit or something.

Still, I preordered.

EDIT: It seems some areas may have some POM or something, but it's not very widely used. Hopefully it's just an early build.
This clearly isn't PS4 footage, as indicated by the key prompts throughout the video. With that said though, I fully expect the next gen console versions to look just as good as what was portrayed here.

Wonder if you'll be able to just stand around and do nothing while that guy's yelling at you to get over there and slice his leg off?

That was way less gruesome than I expected by the way. Wonder if that's toned down for trailermarketing purposes? The Walking Dead did good making you feel like ass about that shit.

Hope you're speaking for yourself.

I'd sure as hell play a open-world simulator where I can do anything from eat a part of a dead animal to shoving a man's head in a toilet bowl, than pulling an Evilore and leave town to travel Asia by myself

Why, oh why would they turn post-AA on when they're using a high end rig to demo it :(
Ugh.

For all those claiming amazing graphics... uh... well I guess it looks slightly better than BF3 on Ultra? Seeing as this is BF4 on Ultra, that's expected. But it's not a leap at all. Just a refinement.

Similar to "Frostbite 3" on top of Frostbite 2 I guess.

Impressive looking, but pretty boring. After the SP fiasco that was Battlefield 3 I have little faith in them creating an interesting and varied campaign.

The multiplayer though, that's where i'll be for a long time. If the PS4 looks anything remotely like this and runs at the rumored 60FPS, this is a day one purchase for sure.

i was joking, because arma exists

Videogames are always about the illusion, I don't know where you are coming from. Every game is scripted, the difference is some games allow you to tackle scenarios in multiple ways.

Sounds like a recipe for a 20 year development cycle.

Arma? What the hell lol

You are telling me that Arma allows you to do what you want in big and highly detailed cities? Gimme a break. I've played arma. It's a military simulator sure, and considering its success I would say it's not exactly setting the worlds imagination on fire.

So the chopper escorts them along while providing support so they can make it to a building, to get to the roof so they can then get in said chopper... er... wut?

You need an extraction point, not somewhere in the middle of the battle. The heli can provide cover fire, sight out other mobile targets, etc.

Yea, don't know why they mentioned frostbite 3 in the article without a confirmation from Dice.

It is Frostbite 3. Frostbite 3 is just a refinement on Frostbite 2.

It's like... remember when minor updates on Firefox were like... Firefox 3.1, Firefox 3.2? And now any refinement is like... Firefox version 13.0, Firefox 14.0? That.

What the...So they talked up that engine all this time just to use it for one game? and then basically trash it for a newer one? They made it sound like Frostbite 2 would be around for awhile.

A version number is a version number. Any new additions to the system merits a change in the version number. It's completely irrelevant beyond tracking those new additions.

I know why they do it, but I really wish the developers would stop revealing the heavy hitter MP games with campaign footage. Also I guess it's BF's thing to do a lot of glare/lens flare/other shit to obscure your view. I loved it in BF3 pre-release, but it's annoying and I'm over it.

All in all the trailer looked good, but ultimately uninteresting (as someone who isn't hot on FPS campaigns to begin with). I'm also holding all excitement until there are solid details on the console versions, and if it's still 12v12.

I expect it to look that good. PS4 specs shouldn't have trouble with it.

we all think should handle it.

later i'd expect better from next gen.

i even suspect this type of game still has it's roots in current gen, after all there are current gen versions.

in year 2-3 when programmers have a had a couple years, and things start being ground up, it should start being even better. like how gears of war in 2006 was really the first true next gen 360 game. or how killzone 2/uncharted 2 raised the bar in 2008/9.

that'd be pretty amazing. can't wait to see the ps3 vs ps4 comparisons.

Yes, actually I do. Have you seen or played Deus Ex: Human Revolution? Being able to seamlessly bounce between third person and first person views when going in and out of cover was a valuable gameplay mechanic. From the footage I've seen so far from both BF4 and Killzone SF, there doesn't seem to be a very useful or engaging cover mechanic, which should be a BIG part of ANY first person shooter. Developers need to do more with the core mechanics. So far, all I've seen from "next gen" are current gen games, current gen mechanics, with prettier graphics.

I have. It works there. It does not work here. To see an enemy that can't see you is not the true feeling of being behind cover. And you're setting the bar incredibly low if you think a third person cover system is an evolution in core gameplay. There were PS2 games with cover systems. There are reasons that not every fps has them.

OMAR COMING, YO!

I didn't know they had recruited Omar into their business.

now: for only 5,99 you get a shotgun and a duster coat whilst whistling!

Looks really good. Lighting is nice, some nice smoke and particles. The lens effects are ridiculous and uncalled for. Overall it's a solid jump over BF3, but I think people were expecting more, more from what we saw of this, and of the PS4 showings thus far. Only thing really shocking to me is how well KZ4 plays up against this if they get it running a solid 60fps. One thing is certain though, I can't wait to see how these games on PC and consoles look 2-3 years after their launches later this year.

This SP stuff though is getting too ridiculous action wise. One of the most impactful movies I've seen is Black Hawk Down, devs should strive for that type of experience as I think it hits home harder as it's more believable thus immersive.

I really wish this was just a tech demo instead of actually putting the resources into this. Nobody outside of the 3 or 4 people here on GAF bought BF3 for it's SP and not MP.

And finally, those horrific sounds at the end with the Battlefield logo are offensive at best, get that shit out of there.

Ahh...thanks for the correction.

"Is he dead?"
"He's not dead he just passed out. We gotta combat life save him, man. You should know this, Pat!"
"It was like a 3 hour course!"

Laughed at that part. Pretty hyped for this, hopefully I get a new computer in time so I could day 1. Question is, what is the premium package and whats regular?

Looks great. This is clearly a step up on everything on the market today. Lighting is insane.

Gameplay wise it seems it will be as boring as 3.

Same way I felt. Really liked the soliders and the dialogue was better than the normal cringe worthy stuff. Visuals were truly spectacular at several points but overall looked boring.

Would you like to go on record saying that PS4 will not be able to exceed this BF4 footage? I'd gladly save that quote for ya.

I believe both consoles will. However, they may not do so on a purely technical level, but with a fantastic combination of tech, art direction, production value matched up with a game that really gets people excited and I think you will absolutely find people determining that certain games exceed this footage, even if they don't necessarily do it on every single level.

Keep in mind that beauty goes far beyond just technical achievement. I wouldn't understand what the best developers can do with more time and mastery of the new consoles. Remember the jump from COD 2 on the 360 to COD4? Remember the jump from Resistance to Killzone? The first Uncharted to Uncharted 2? Forza 2 to Forza 4. If next gen consoles get anywhere close to this footage, and I think they will, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet they will also exceed the footage before all is said and done. Can you imagine what Naughty Dog will achieve with the PS4's specs? If it sounds downright scary, that's because it should. I feel confident saying both consoles, in their own unique way, will exceed this footage. I'd keep an eye on Turn 10 with Forza, Polyphony with GT, Rockstar with a possible next gen Red Dead Redemption and surely a new GTA. I also would focus in like a laser beam on 343i with Halo 5 after seeing what they did on the 360. You could make a legitimate claim that there's just so much power on these 2 upcoming next gen consoles that it almost isn't fair. What they can't do for real with all this power, their ability to fake it or fake something even more impressive has gone up drastically. When devs get done on both machines, we will have a whole new appreciation for the term diminishing returns. There's enough power on these machines to do almost anything. If devs can't make magic on these specs, something is wrong.

I base this purely on the incredible achievements with 512MB of ram, much weaker CPUs and tremendously weaker and far less efficient GPUs.
