Female soldiers will not be playable in Battlefield 4's multiplayer or singleplayer

Is this a feature that used to be in old Battlefield games and was taken out? Or is this just something we're randomly outraged about today?

I don't really understand the issue here. Is it required that choice of sex be mandatory in every game from now on?

I don't get it either. Today it's females not being properly represented. I predict tomorrow that alien species will not be properly represented in modern military shooters and will lead to another 15 page debacle.

In a game that's not built around a single primary character, It's lazy at best and exclusionary at worst.

This has me thinking that in all the shooters i've played and all the people i've killed about 96% are men. In all honesty it would be pretty weird to see a detailed close combat kill with a knife slashing a woman's throat.
That would cause a lot more controversy than the mild one being manufactured in this thread, I think.

It really shouldn't if people remember the context of a game which is war. Players can get blown up, gunned down, sniped etc yet why would all these be tolerated but not a knife attack?

There may as well be controversy for any time a female character dies in a video game no matter the situation.

How risky a move was it for these games?

By the way, people have been asking DICE for female soldiers for a while, not just because of the rumors. I believe the designers even acknowledged it was something they hear a lot and would like to do, eventually. The disappointing part is that "eventually" apparently wasn't BF4.

I don't ever recall a single mention of concern regarding have a female character in any of these games. Before or after release.

Plenty of people want and have wanted the feature for a while. I could've sworn DICE said something along the lines of "maybe, we'd like to do it eventually" at some point last year, but I can't find the interview where they mention it. I could be wrong.

In a game about war where people can get blown up, gunned down, sniped etc you'd take issue with a knife attack (that probably happens infrequently?).

Knifing soldiers in BF3 mp happens very often. I must have knifed at least ten people today in Canals.

Anyway I'm bummed out by this news a bit, I have a female friend that I play bf3 with pretty much 5 times a week and she was hoping for this feature. It doesn't break her interest in BF4 at all however.

On the subject of why they werent included in the MP, I highly doubt there's any sexism involded, and it's simply a matter of getting the game out as fast as possible. The amount of women who play realistic(I use this term lightly) FPS war games is pretty small(almost all of my female friends prefer TPSs by a wider margin with the exception of borderlands) and I'm sure some people just didn't think it'd be worth the time or some bullshit like that, I doubt it was actually considered that a lot of guys like myself typically enjoy playing as women from time to time. I don't know how much of a difference it makes in an FPS game like this though, since how your PC looks in these games generally doesnt matter to me, and I figure I'm not the only one who feels that way.

I never pay any mind to how my character looks in Battlefield or Call of Duty, as far as I'm concerned I'm just a pair of hands and a gun. It'd only make a real change in how the people you're shooting/being shot at by look. I'd say a few subtle changes to character faces and adding female voices would suffice. I don't think there needs to be significant differences in models to broadcast the fact that this character is female. In full gear and wearing helmets I've found it pretty hard to tell a female soldier from a male unless right in their faces.

Long story short, wish it was in there, maybe next time. Perhaps they can be added in the game later on with one of the patches that usually accompany the expansion packs?

EDIT:

I most definitely remember this.

Multiplayer shooters that feature female characters:

Halo 2
Halo 3

Halo Reach
Halo 4
Planetside 2
Blacklight Retribution
Uncharted 2
Uncharted 3
Tomb Raider
Gears of War 2
Gears of War 3
Call of Duty (in Zombies)
Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 2
Mass Effect 3

I'm sure I'm missing a whole bunch, but that's a pretty decent list of franchises that haven't had their worlds flipped, turned upside down by the presence of female characters. If these games can do it, so can Battlefield and its ilk.

I don't remember this.

Wow. You're right. I never used the option, so I forgot it existed.

It was much more pronounced in Reach and 4 of course. Thought it was introduced there.

That's pretty stupid, but this is also how it goes in most military themed movies...

Of course not defending DICE but well, let's hope they do something in the next game. At least we have female soldiers in SP even if not playable...it must be a first in BF.

They invited her, so surely her invitation must have had some purpose.

Or maybe it was just some PR trick and the developers didn't actually listen to any of the stuff she had to say about female representation in games.

Or maybe that's what happened!:

DICE:" So here we have our female soldiers in our upcoming BF game..."

Anita:"WHAT!!?? WOMEN WITH MEN CLOTHES!! THEY AREN'T WOMEN AT ALL!!! THEY HAVE TO BE NURTURING WOMEN THAT SHOWS HOW GREAT IS TO BE A WOMAN!! UGH DISGUSTING!"

DICE:"Ok? so no female soldiers...at all?

Anita:"Of course only the thought of seeing women being degraded like that is making me sick...btw, where are my 3k bucks?"

In Gears of War 3, you can watch Anya's head be smashed off by the butt of a shotgun.

Nobody complained about this tragic injustice to women, because the overwhelming majority of feminists are actually reasonable people.

It has nothing to do with women being in the game. It has everything to do with how much it costs to put them in and do it right. Dice cares about the quality of battlefield and doesn't want to just drop a female head on the male bodies. Creating female models and then creating an entire motion set and audio is a huge undertaking. Most likely when they measured it up to other features they wanted it lost. It isn't a conspiracy its just managers scoping features designers aren't married to. As a battlefield player would you rather have something new to do inside the game or have a female avatar.

The assets already exists, at least in the singleplayer campaign.

Besides, with the amount of funding that DICE receives for this game, implementing female meshes, animations, textures, and voices are incredibly cheap in the grand scheme of things, whereas hiring expensive voice actors, orchestrating the massively scripted setpieces, getting a Hans Zimmer clone to do the soundtrack, and airing a single 20-second commercial on TV are much, much more expensive.

If I hadn't remembered that Relaxed Muscle was a sane poster, I would have fallen for it.

I'm willing to believe that there are real tradeoffs involved with female characters that they don't have the scope to solve. At the moment, it isn't a high priority for them.

So the only way to encourage them to change their priorities is to complain about it. Expressing dissatisfaction is the only way for a consumer to give specific feedback. If it's solvable, then maybe female soldiers will be introduced.

That's how we got a 'retry event' option in Burnout Paradise!

You'll make me blush!.

Also remember how Bioware couldn't bothered to give female shepard it's own animations, so she dosn't walks and runs like a man. But they did gave her a shitty standard face obviously made with the game character creator thing to show how much they cared about it. And it was supossed to be an AAA game.

Saw this comment pop up on YouTube. Just, yeah.

Youtube comments, we need to say anymore?

Only read the top ones. 90% they are funny.

They couldnt even fit holster animations into the 3rd game and you want a unique set of female animations. PRIORITIES.

I wouldnt sacrifice anything else from the game in order to include a different set of animations and pay for a face model for a female when the character is used by less than 20% of the customers.

Didn't Nirolak just post that they took out the holster animation to save 3 mb of memory in ME3?

What is this bullshit

Outrage of the week.
Who is outraged

?

The walking and walking fast animation for FemShep is different than MaleShep.

If your critique of FemShep is "shitty standard face" then you are just being petty and overly nitpicking.

well the rumor started with EA china which said you can deploy females in MP. total BS now.

Sorry, I was making a Big Lebowski joke.

It dosn't feel like that, that's for sure. At least in the first two ME games. And that's just one complaint. Bioware treatment of female shepard have been subpar, there's no doubt about it.

Oh, well, I forgot about the pilot in the Jet mission. Can you blame me?

That's what happens when for two games you focus all the marketing around male Shepard. I won't say I can't understand their priorities and that after all probably a good chunk of people who played female shepard are men, but that dosn't mean you can't put a bit more of attention into it.

Tell us how you really feel.

I don't know myself. I need someone to tell me how I should feel!

I don't think the point here is that DICE lied, specially because they didn't. They never said there would be female playables, it was just a chinese rumor.

I do think the point of this debate is that it's starting to appear a demand for a better gender ratio in games. Be female gamers becomign more vocal or gamers overall desiring more options, including genders.

So yeah, I would like more multiplayer games to have female options. It has been pointed many times in this thread that hitbox and re-work excuses are kinda bs.

I don't understand why this controversial? The last shooter I remember having female options was GoldenEye.
Like pointed out before, there are other more recent shooters that do have female playable avatars. Even there wasn't, the idea of modern games losing options that used to appear fifteen years ago IS troubling.

What motivated you to make such a worthless shit post?

Because you have no evidence that her visit didn't have an influence? All you're going off of is the fact that there's no female multiplayer models (which as duckrollNirolak said could be a technical issue) and your interpretation of one line taken out of context from a trailer. Not to mention that the talk only happened a few months ago.

why is this even news!? God damn. Not playable as female character? so? I don't give damn.

When I buy games to play I don't give a shit if I play as a male or female character, I just want a good game.

If you're so desperate to play a female character go play Mirror's Edge or Tomb Raider or any game/RPG that lets you create your own character.

Enough with this BS about feminism/sexism. This shouldn't even be news. What should be news is state of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan that the media has chosen to so conveniently ignore for many years now.

I'm confused. You want gaming sites to cover wars?

DICE dedicated their "women MP models" resources towards modeling, texturing, and animating the pteranodons and BF2143 vehicle in BF3 End Game.

I guess you could sum it up as boys club wanting to keep things exclusive to the boys. Because there's no rational or reasonable arguments to be found for it.

Lol, keep telling yourself that. Because there were clearly so many guys that had an issue with the lead characters from Bayonetta, Mirror's Edge, Portal, Tomb Raider, Heavenly Sword, Alice, and were demanding for all the female characters to be taken out of Uncharted, Halo, Gears of War, Mortal Kombat, etc. What a sexist, misogynistic boy's club video gaming is.

Get over yourself.
