Next gen cel shading: will games finally look like cartoons/anime?

So which of these Naruto games should I pick up? I'm not interested in the series at all... but it has been awhile since my TV has been graced with cell shading, so I'm willing to take the plunge.

Please tell me that's a fan animation gif lol
Nope.

I know nothing of Naruto, other than that my laymen's eyes find the game looks absolutely sublimely cartoonish.

I think the rendering techniques are pretty damn good, Id like to see the quality of the animation improve. Make a toony platformer with the best celshading of this generation but as close of an approximation to the animation of something like Hotel Tranyslvania or King Candy in Wreckit Ralph as possible and I'd be seriously wowed. Moreso than just better rendering techniques

For what they're aiming for (which obviously less toonier than my suggestion) CyberConnect's games are REALLY damn good

Not interested in the series at all? I'd say 2 or 3. 2 would probably be better since it'd be cheaper.

If you are talking about Wind Waker HD - From the concept art, it looks like they aren't using cel shading anymore.

Thats current gen

"oh no he didn't!"

Looks like a new "clay" type artsyle to me and Im lovin it.

also,Wii U is not nextgen
amidoinitrite?

yeah i've seen the shots and yeah not very cell shaded, still hold out hope when its shown properly it'll be back though if the changed art style is stuck then it looks pretty cool

and if wii u is current gen i assume the thread is asking if cell shading will look like cartoons on x1080 / wii v / ps5

Dunno if they'll reach actual animation quality, but they'll get closer for sure!!

Just wish more games used the style

I don't think there's any doubt that the techniques used now will look better on next-gen hardware, so I'm just going to use this thread as an excuse to post a Valkyria Chronicles screenshot

I only wonder if we'll see this sort of artistic choice invested outside of niche titles.

character models from this gen are already pretty damn close

Neither of those models look like they were taken from an anime... They look like what they are, 3D models dressed up in cosplay.

Compare those to how Ni No Kuni looks, which is a helluva lot closer but still... meh.

I can't wait for next-gen to give us in-game animation like this

Actually that episode has amazing animation and probably one of the hardest to recreate with 3d. With 2d you can stretch and break things to your hearts desire in order to get the effect you want. Only the last few CG movies are getting to the point where 2D is.

People keep using shitty gifs using it as an an example of shitty animation, but the guy who did it is a fucking master. He also did the Hidan fight, and Jiraya vs Pain fight.

I think the problem has always been in mimicking the animation and effects of anime/cartoons rather than the actual looks.

I wish this engine was used for a DB game or some other cartoon property I gave a shit about
Agreed.

that's the constantly mentioned ep 167.

i heard a lot of people saying how that ep looked bad and weird compared to normal eps irl.

Didn't see it but it seemed to be meant to be a stylized animation.. no ?

About the topic, i think visually we can and we'll be even more (16x more!) able to match anime look. But the thing you really need to make it work is incredible animations in the end.

Would that still be the case if cost isn't an issue? I'm mostly looking for the biggest visual spectacle.

My memory is a bit hazy, but I THINK UNS2 had the better boss battles and pacing. There have been moments where UNS3 has felt like an MGS game. 30 minute cutscenes (and not super awesome animation cutscenes...just people talking).

videogames still have a long ways to go...

This is just rotoscoped.

Also, CyberConnect has long since obliterated all cel-shaded games before it. It's as close as you can get with a 3D model looking like the hand drawn counterparts. I also think One Piece Musou does an excellent job of capturing the shows look with the cutscenes and character models.

10 years ago we had Wnd waker and XIII, they still look great, especially on emulators but now we have Ninokuni and Naruto UNS3, they are a massive improvement over what was possible a decade ago. Cel shaded games have never been this close in resembling real hand drawn animation. Will next gen power finally make it possible to play real cartoons and anime?

Imagine a game like this:

LOL sorry I had to

I just want to see CyberConnect2 blow minds all over the place with their godlike cel shading skills next gen. Their Naruto games are some of the prettiest games of this gen without a doubt.

Its less that its hard its just for the longest time it was prohibitively expensive. Doing it cost effectively (and in realtime too Id wager) is the hard part.
There was a cg test of a roger rabbit 2 in the late 90s/early 00s and the animation was unrivaled until recently- the problem was the test alone was more expensive than an entire film budget

Did he work on the bonkers stuff near the end of Birdy? It looks quite similar.

Speaking of which, I'd play a Birdy fighting game.
Crazy Birdy stuff was usually Ryo-timo, Shingo Yamashita, and Tomoyuki Niho.

Yamashita actually animated the entire first part/half (12 mins prior to commercial break) of Shitpudding 167 himself, so that may be why it looks familiar.

I do not understand how anyone could think this is good.
having knowledge and/or appreciation for animation helps

I'm okay with this....... as long as they make some new .hack// games with it.

Cheaper and better sounds like a buy. Thanks.

Animation (as in the process of making pictures move) is good, lots of detail and complex distortion. This is why animation buffs love it.

Art style is very unappealing and clashes sharply with the rest of the series. This is why fans hate it.

The problem is that "anime look" basically means "imperfections, low framerate, and deliberate deformation". Meanwhile, the use of cel-shading is to create consistent results, automatically tween, and stay on-model.

You can put a lot of work into detuning cutscenes, but for in-game action it's always going to be more obvious.

Just based on the gifs(I haven't actually watched the episode in question), it has a really interesting sense of movement and flow. The action seems a lot more dynamic and kinetic than in these two:

Pain doesn't have a rubber-stretchy face, though. He also takes a block of concrete to the head like a Looney Tunes character and is still capable of moving. The entire episode is filled with WTF moments that just don't fit in.

The rubber stretchy face does a really good job of showing the impact and force of the punch he's taking through the visuals.
