We've seen the Unreal 4 Engine demos, Square's Next Gen demo, etc. I need to see at least a few PS4 launch games that look like that and are exciting gameplay prospects to me. I hope Sony brings it to E3.

This really isn't true in this particular case, given how much it sold on the 360.

The PS3 version sold significantly more than the 360 version even in Microsoft's best market (US). Now that PS4 is launching around the same time as the 720, they won't have a year head start and Sony could easily put forth money to keep the series exclusive, similar to what Microsoft does with Gears.

Well now it's not as black and white as that. I really doubt that a FF game takes less money to create than HR. HR was succesful in part because QD are very development-savvy and created that thing for less than 17 million. Who knows how much a FF game takes to create, and then who knows how much of a return Sony would even get on that since Square isn't a first party studio.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be succesful, I'm just saying it's not as clear-cut of a comparison as you make it out to be.

You say that yet most of the sales they got on the last main entry primarily sold on mostly on one system. It's sequel even more so. If Sony either assists in development or marketing I would rather them aliviate some of my costs rather then getting a few hundred thousand in sales on another console.

You say can't afford but that's not how development works. It costs money to make a game multiplatform let alone porting the game to another system. Square tried puting FF on Xbox and it didn't pay them back in dividends like they thought. The idea that Square Enix cannot make exclusive games anymore is ludicrous. Especially since if Versus is XV, Nomura will have a say in if the game goes multiplatform. And looking at Nomura's track record....

Edit: Also XIV is, console wise, exclusive to PS3. So.... yeah. Have to make multiplatform. Hahahahaha.
 
Sony doesn't need to have all of their studios creating launch games, hell they only need a few good ones to generate hype. More importantly, you need a steady stream of games throughout the following year of release.

They can tease a 2014 fall game or three, which opens up more in house developers to be present at the conference. KZ, drive club and Knack are launch, I think Infamous is launch window. So ND, PD and SSM could all be 14' titles and still announce what they are working on.

Personally, I would love a resurgence of Japanese exclusive titles on PlayStation again. This would gravitate the Japanese user base to PS4 so more and more devs would produce games for it, and the games would be of higher graphical fidelity. I would hate if the market is segregated on consoles (ie Wii U + PS4) and in turn you have developers working on ancient hardware limiting the scope of the game. Even worse, without a strong userbase, they will feel compelled to win over the west again and we all know how well that turned out this gen.

Hopefully Sony can capitalize on the shifting market.

FF hasn't sold in the 8m range since 8. Now they typically sell 5 or 6m units for a new mainline entry.

15 is obviously hugely important for them. They need to make sure that they knock it out the park. It needs to be hugely ambitious like people expect from the series. Which means no more linear dungeon crawls. Versus, at least from the little we know, is ambitious. That's why some are comfortable with it being retitled to 15. But that's up to Square. They need to make sure that it's the right call and not something that they're just jumping the gun with. If it's not Versus then they need to give it to someone like Ito.

The game sold 1m copies in its first iteration on an Xbox console. They can easily build upon those sales, especially if they make the series more western whilst keeping its Japanese identity.
 
This will be the most disappointing e3 of all time because expectations are too high and people will be pissed because that thing they wanted wasn't announced.

Like zone of the enders 3.
 
They're going to have to. Everyone has to bring the heat amidst the arrival of next gen. And it looks like Sony will deliver much more and better stuff in terms of games for the PS4. TLG and FFXV/Versus notably. Those two will be enough, on top of how the console looks which we know is coming.

This E3 is going to be great, and Sony is just going to win over more of gamers hearts with what they show.

Hard to build upon those sales when you no longer have a year+ headstart in terms of userbase, which is probably why FFXIII even came to the 360 to begin with.
 
I still think we see FF VII redone in the new SE engine rather than FF XV. I think it makes sense if they're publishing it with Sony, and that Square wants to earn some goodwill back after FF XIII.

It's time. Now will it be good? is a whole different question.

Lets think about it like this.

1 million copies sold = ~ 50 million in revenue

Marketing campaign for the last few Final Fantasy titles approach ~ 60-80 million

Development cost can range for a AAA title like that from ~ 60 million - 100 million

Now if a hardware manufacture came up to you and said they would market the game for you instead or alleviate some of the development costs for you which would you rather choose? It's not rocket science.

I know. I was being generous. Plus it's an estimate I'm not perfect. 6-8 dollars on every copy goes to the hardware manufacture and a little goes to the middle man. Square is both the publisher and developer of the title so they can get a lot of what's sold back.

I'd choose to release my game in a console that's way more popular in two massive regions. Whose to say VS 13 if it's an awesome game can't come out and sell millions on an Xbox console?
 
Setting my expectations low. Really just looking forward to more polished presentations of the games they showed at the PS Meeting + whatever 3rd parties have to show.
 
well, considering what we know about PS4 and its games (a lot) and what we know about 720 and its games (nothing), i would guess MS will drop more "bombs", simply because they are so far behind right now.
 
Outside FFXV there ain't honestly much megatons of existing IPs I see happening as ''multiplats turned exclusives''.

For betrayaltons the only one I can think of is Gears but I think MS will moneyhat another round of exclusivity.

It will be interesting to see the rest of Sonys new IP. Mostly Gorillas RPG and SSM new IP. Ready at Dawn might surprise, who knows.

Not for Sony side I think. They will try to wow us with games.

What feature could they possibly have for a megaton? Video services don't work for Sony main audience, they already have their Netflix ect.

But.... how would we determine that? The next Xbox hasn't even been announced let alone released. How would we determine that it would still be a massive success in North America again?

If I was Square Enix I would use past data points and what a major shareholder of mine (Sony) would want to assist with for exclusivity.
From there I would determine exclusitivity. The whole FF on Xbox hasn't, like I stated before, hasn't paid back in dividends. The reason Xbox originally got XIII was they promised to promote the game. That alleviates some of the marketing costs for Square Enix. It didn't pan out for MS or SE. So why would SE want to put the money on the line again for a system that hasn't released yet and is yet to be determined if its a success yet. Add on top of that MS might not want to help with marketing or costs and you got yourself an exclusive game for a company that does want to help.

Why do people keep pretending that Ready At Dawn is some sort of first-party developer when they're not anymore?

If Sony is co-developing the game then yes it will be exclusive. This is only a rumor right now...
 
Not to keep harping on this, but I just read a preview of Second Son in Game Informer and it just sounds awesome. They seem to be focusing on the story a lot more, which is one of the only things I didn't care for in infamous 2.

I had no idea they were going so far into this counter-culture vs. totalitarian state thing. I love that kind of stuff.

Exactly. No one knows how it's going to go down at this point. If the nextbXbox is a massive success in NA, completely dominates etc, then they've cut themselves off from all those sales. And like I said earlier, 1m can easily be built upon.

It is likely the game will be exclusive, I just hope they know what they're doing.
