Polygon Rumor: Xbox 720 DRM, Achievements, Friendslist, and Share feature info

I fully expect we will be able to... Just unsure of day 1 availability

Though if people want to use online or B&M, it's their choice

I also don't expect games to be consistently pushing that 50 gig barrier, either

I wouldn't be suprised if they do, 360 games for example all extract to ISO form at a size of about 7.4 gig, no matter if the actual game uses that much data, i bet next gen games will be the same.

Yeah but that's DVD- and if you're looking at the ISO, it's got waste sectors from their security scheme (cactus)

I'm ok with one time online activation required.

I don't think this alone will block used games, but this online activation could lead to requiring another free if you want to use the disc with a different account.

For example, you buy a game, register it to your account with online activation, and you can use it wherever you are signed in. If you want to play it under another account, you'll have to pay 10 dollars to activate it under the new account. Or something along the lines of this. Gamestop can still sell used games, and publishers get a cut of the used game market.

I think there is more chance of places like Gamestop getting codes to sell with used games or they have a special site where they can download codes that the customer gets on the receipt or something when they buy a game.

It's too bad we won't know anything for sure until E3 at the earliest. Microsoft will most certainly side-step anything that could be bad press, just like Sony did with their announcement.

Why though? What different does it make? What do you get for having achievements or miss out on by not having them? Maybe it might be time for a bit of self-analysis as you must realize this is not normal.

Its no more out of the norm than the average person wanting to finish the games they play. With the achievement system some people feel they haven't truly finished a game until they have all of the achievements. Just because you feel it isn't normal doesn't mean its the wrong way to play video games.

Maybe you're right but i still expect the majority of games to have filler and shit tht pushes them close to the 50gig limit, unless they do some kind of 'cut down' versions for digital downloads to keep the size smaller although we would still probably be talking about 25+gig.

Well if all these rumours are true then their conference will be about 10mins long then!.

It sounds unbelievably awful, they are going to be treating players like monkeys. They'll make people buy Doritos and play garbage companion apps while forcing them to 'like' on Facebook for a stupid Achievement.

It's such an Xbox thing to do now that I think about it. Consistent with the way they see and treat their customers.

Indeed. The MS approach is the antithesis of all good things in gaming. May they smolder ever so slowly in the embers of hell. ;)

Personally I've permanently written them off. Sony, Nintendo and PC for me.

Could anybody see a publisher pulling some sort of online drm for a limited time after a game releases and then dropping the dem after a month or two?

I expect something like this to happen before we jump into full online dem mode.

after spending this current generation with the xbox360, it doesn't even matter cause im buying a PS4.

They wouldn't need to unless the security of the Durango hardware fails if online activation is required

Sure. I want to finish every game, but I don't, but that doesn't mean that I hate games or whatever business drives video games because I don't end up finishing every game I start. Sometimes I just don't get around to finishing them and who cares? What difference does it make? That's all I'm asking.

We're gonna get tidbits constantly after the 21st. This has always been their plan: Reveal-> E3 -> Release all relatively close together/in quick succession.

And there'll definitely be Q&A after the reveal. We're gonna get a clear picture of the DRM.situation that week.

Who playing game for achievement? stahp.

No I won't stop. Can't stop.

And yeah, those "seasonal" achievements are pretty scuzzy if they're used for more than seasonal holiday playing type of stuff and you can't grab them later. The fact Polygon is calling it "achievement modification for player behaviors" is pretty telling. Not enough people are playing your online? 2XP achievement and event thrown out!

I'm convinced that the only Online REQUIRED connection is for those who buy the subsidized version with the monthly Live payment.

It is like a cell phone plan, if you don't pay the monthly bill for your subsidized phones they shut off your account (live will be inaccessible)

so you can not play otherwise, how else keep some people paying for their subsidized machine and how else to recoup the subsidy?

You are not necessarily paying for Live although it is included, you are paying for the machine

This is designed specifically to allow developers to tweak player behavior, perhaps urging players to check out specific areas of a game or get past a difficult spot.
The amount of contempt necessary to leave such an expression unharmed is quite astonishing.

they mean GAME PLAY behavior, not trying to change people.

It's interactive entertainment and can be enhanced by creating more interesting challenges as they are uncovered

it is not some ominous plot

Which achievements were meant to do since their inception.

No, he doesn't, he says the publisher may choose to make online required. Online required comes in two flavors one time activation or consistent online connection.

No, Paul only said that Durango must be Internet connected to use, he didn't know how it was going to be implemented.

Yes it is. It is ruining Achievements for people who like them not being marketing ads.

I don't have a problem with timed or event specific achievements, as long as they aren't completely unobtainable after it is over. The Halo 3 Vidmaster and Arkham City Calender man achivements were time-related but i am fine with that sort.

I don't have 100% completion in many games but it really annoys me when i see a game that i know i will never be able to 100%.

I agree. This makes sense. That combined with TV overlay and data if the cable partnerships ring true.

One thing is for sure: we're all going to get fucked by big publishers like EA even more next-gen. Thanks, MS & Sony!

Hm... would be a smart move from MS to let the publisher decide if they want to use DRM or not...

Not to mention it's bonus positive PR for companies like CDPRed who won't utilize it.

I think this shit is inevitable, and leaving it up to the publishers is a lesser evil than making it mandatory.

And so would SONY/MS telling them to go F themselves and not do this crap, but that ain't happening.

This debate has been going on far too long now. It was inevitable.
I think it ain't even that bad. That way we will see if this will work or not but it also give pubs the oportunity to go back to the old distribution model if it does not work.

I'm really curious to see if DRM would work on consoles and how many people will support it.

I do not agree. I think that they have as much say as the HW makers.

Before you say they do not care about gamers or developers... developers are free to go where they are treated well and gamers vote with their wallet.

Achievements were cool at first, but now they just annoy me...is there a way to turn off achievement notifications in steam?

You know what would have been fascinating? If Nintendo had held off a few years, and launched the Nintendo whatever (not Wii U) that was as powerfu and easy to develop forl as the Nextbox/PS4, but had NO DRM restrictions whatsoever. That would have been an interesting twist to the usual three-way war that could have possibly changed some things.

You know it's the future when the only reasonable alternatives are evil and less evil.

I guess so. I guess we all just have to pick and choose what we buy to show if we really are against these things.

And every song and game ever pirated led to this moment. I bet you are as guilty of that as I was back in my early days. Humans can not help themselves.
I share neither your cynical view on human nature, your history of pirating songs and games nor the kind of thinking that detects a logical connection between the coming restrictions and piracy.

Are you talking from experience or just from your ass? It doesn't make sense to charge a few extra $10k for a region free game. It really doesn't make sense when it's supposed to be a single certification for every region, or so I thought.

MS has a single cert process but a separate cert fee for each region (reasonable, quality cert appears to be the same w/w but content cert isn't.) You cannot manufacture discs flagged as bootable in an uncerted region.

Sony has a separate cert process and separate cert fee for each region, but a PS3 disc that passes cert in any region will boot on any PS3 (but has the option of booting to an angry message telling you you're out of region rather than actual gameplay).

Source is comments from small publishers, particularly Cave, over their decisions to lock or unlock particular titles. Things may have changed since '09 or '10, but it's unlikely they've changed for the better as those publishers have moved back to locked releases.

the average console owner doesn't even know what DRM is... they have DRM on their phone and ipad... they use walled gardens all the time.

this is being blown up way too far.

most of the people complaining about DRM have downloaded games which they effectively don't own... read the XBLA and PSN terms carefully.

I can play games offline, watch videos and run most apps on my phone and ipad without an internet connection.

I can play most XBLA/PSN games offline.

So it's not really the same thing at all, is it.

Sounds like it leaves it up to the publishers for always on needed for games

Its called passing the buck.

They want nothing to do with this shitstorm.

They're leaving themselves an out so they can come out of the toilet smelling like a rose when the first publisher flips the switch on this.

"Bu..bu..but..dont be mad at us guys, we aren't the ones who are doing this. Its up to our publishing partners".

Yeah...but who is giving them the option to do it?

Will see how they decide to execute 'this' rumoured achievement system. If they just pluck it in as it is, then just... just... why would you do that... Few care about achievements per se, and more about how they reflect on the completionist nature of people. Which is one of the major advantages Sony's system has over Xbox with platinum trophies etc., yet imo their presentation pales in comparison to achievements.

But enough of that. If they just combine everything together, then fuck me. That is one godawful business idea, and fucks up the whole system. But if they separate achievements from some secondary combination e.g. seasonal awards, then that is extremely welcome. While not a console platform, WoW does this extremely well, by including both, a traditional achievement system for everything you do, and awards for multiplayer performance (i.e. the gladiator title for the best ones). I can just imagine myself playing some Forza with the name: HALO LEGEND CIRI.

I think there is more chance of places like Gamestop getting codes to sell with used games or they have a special site where they can download codes that the customer gets on the receipt or something when they buy a game.

Or, worse yet, EXCLUSIVITY, for used games access codes for particular venders. "Buy X used and get Y DLC (or 'Rewards Points') free, only at Gamestop". Sounds fishy, I know, but this IS business.

I hope sony does something similarly stupid with their trophies because i've finally been feeling like they are a waste of time so the more absurdly broken the system is the more likely I will be able to cut myself off at the teet.

I was really obsessed with trophies for a while. What a goddamn waste that was.
