Grand Theft Auto IV has the best driving physics of any open-world game, ever

My guess...

GTA V will not sell anywhere near what GTA IV did, regardless of whether they return to San Andreas handling or stick with IV's handling.

The physics from IV is obviously very divisive. One side will be pissed off and may not buy V.

Oh funny, we had the exact same going on in the first trailer thread - Someone didn't think this game could outsell IV and a handful of people made a bet with him, including myself. Too bad his ass is banned.

However I'd love to take that bet. GTA V is going to sell by the bucket loads and soar past IV.

He got banned? Godamnit, I made a bet with him too, it was like taking candy from a child.

It won't sell more than GTA IV sold at launch? Despite their being vastly more consoles?

If the same percentage of gamers bought GTA V, it would sell more.

GTA 4 in stock form is pretty awful. The cars are all really slow and also pretty easy to control. But add some mods to the PC version and then you've got thing like drifting, burning rubber, real speed and acceleration differences etc. People have modded the shit out of the handling and it shows. And not just for the cars, even the helicopters are 100% more agile and actually pretty tricky to fly well.

I really hope Rockstar have been watching and give us something like that for GTA V because it made the game so much more fun for me.

Which is amazing, imo... unless you want the turn 90° button like Saint's Row or Sleepy Dogs.

If I can't do that Rockstar won't ever be getting my money again.

What the fuck is "fun factor"? Such a shitty, meaningless phrase.

"Fun factor" can mean anything. To me, and many others, it's derived from challenging gameplay. I have much more "fun" learning to drive in GTAIV than I do getting to my destinations essentially on-rails in other open-world games.

It's like how "fun" to me is playing on the highest difficulty. That's fun. I need to be challenged, because that's where the reward comes from.

When the challenge comes from bad controls, the game is broken. You shouldn't have to fight the controls in a video game, they should be intuitive and easy. The challenge should come from things like combat scenarios or car chases.

Going back to the game, I kinda like the driving physics now. Actually feels good with a keyboard. Had always played it with a controller before.

That looks amazing. Exactly what I wanted out of the game.

And it is on sale on Steam right now....

This looks great, I'm telling ya, leave it to the modders to fix and improve games. When they work on something anything is possible.

Indeed and one of the reasons why even if you dislike IV or skyrim or what ever you should still get them because of the vast amoubt of mods available.

I spent a good 40 hours JUST adding in/ changing every car in game to real life counterparts, adding in mew map locations, ENB, textures guns etc...

Sadly i added so much the game just crashed a lot, plus I had an inch of getting back into IV racing so had to delete it all.

I just really wish games like SR,C and SD offered mods to the same level ( then again, IV was only moddable because of the very large community who spent time making tools and such to make it moddable)

I think new previews are going out this week for GTA V? And we've got new trailers?! Amazing.

Here's hoping someone discusses how driving feels- and if it is different!

GTA IV's driving felt like trying to control an elephant while in an ice rink. Except the elephant would often catch fire and explode when it bumped around.

GTA IV's driving physics we're utterly horrendous.

It was the third reason why I gave up and stopped playing the game.

1.) it has awful characters and story
2.) it has one of the worst checkpoint systems in a game ever

Agreed, I really can't understand why anyone would want an 80-hour game where you can trivially master a major gameplay mechanic in the first 30 minutes and it's a tedious chore for the other 79.5 hours.

Do the modded cars have the same destruction/deformation model as the normal cars?

The past GTA games were very addicting, and they didn't require you to master much at all. It was pickup and play, let your imagination run wild on the world. See what you can get away with, do stunt jumps, find packages to have weapons spawn at your save point. Try to stuff a extra car in your garage to save that sexyness on wheels.

Linked to the demonstration of the car deformation, they say it's improved even.

There was a learning curve, once you get used to it it's a lot of fun.

I still don't understand how anyone enjoys all the driving in any open world game. It's commuting, almost as boring as it is in real life. I used the cabs every time I could in GTA IV.

Because the physics made it fun, you could try random jumps now and then, not exactly commuting like real life, I don't plan on doing stunts and running people over in real life.

I did use the cabs many times though, sometimes you just want to do a mission and can't be bothered to drive.

Yeah, May 2nd.

Hopefully they'll talk about the wildlife, though they could also say something about the multiplayer.

I treated GTAIV cars like drift cars using american muscle with ebrake so much fun just weaving in out traffic

best place to practise was Star Junction

This comparison reminds me of the bland indie platformers that have no concept of acceleration or momentum. Sure it might be easier and more intuitive to be able to turn on a dime in midair, but I'd much rather play a game that has some nuance to its controls like Mario or Super Meat Boy.

You can do all that sandboxy stuff in GTA IV too. Well, Rockstar removed some things, but that had nothing to do with the driving model.

I was replying to this.

I played GTA:SA for more than 80 hours, there was nothing to master other than that RC chopper minigame mission (horrible controls lol). The game was a joy to play, harrier jets, car school, plane school, zipping around the city. It was a guilty pleasure, do what you want like minecraft. No GTA4 physics to tame on wheels and on foot.

GTA4 had less random things happen. Cops breathed down your neck. There was far less codes, and when you use them you had to bring up the phone (sucks when you're getting shot because it interrupts the phone), the codes don't stick (wanted level can go back up if you wipe it). The weapons were very boring (TBoGT fixed it but I didn't want anything to do with GTA4. I only got TBoGT years later and because it was pretty much free). There's still no jets.

GTA5 should fix the fun factor of just messing around the city. I wonder how the characters will feel while walking and turning while running.

What I'm trying to get at is that you could still have all that and a driving system that takes some time to master.

I completely agree that GTA IV could have used more variety. I enjoyed the game in spite of it, but I still look at San Andreas and wish IV could have matched the larger world and vehicle/mission variety. I just have a hard time going back to the earlier games because the driving model is so unremarkable. Hopefully V will give us the best of both worlds.

Just looking through the first page, I'm surprised to see so many like GTAIV's driving physics. It seemed like they were universally shat upon. I'm glad I'm not alone.

...Loved the Futo in that game.

Sorry, but Grand Theft Auto 5 will DESTROY Grand Theft Auto 4. A number of reasons.

1) The game comes five years later in the life of Xbox 360 and PS3. Larger installed base means larger pool of customers to purchase the game.

2) The game is revisiting the world of San Andreas, which appeared in the PS2 game GTA San Andreas, one of the best selling games of the entire GTA series.

3) By all accounts it is the most ambitious game Rockstar has ever produced, and will have behind it the marketing muscle to get the word out

4) The unique gameplay possibilities (three protagonists all working together in some missions, as an example) ensure a fresh experience, which will help to entice even the most jaded fan of open world 3rd person action games

5) It promises to 'do for open world multiplayer what GTA3 did for open world single player,' and we all know how important multiplayer games are nowadays.

It has everything going for it.

On point 3 and 5:

3)This marketing muscle is yet to be flexed, because so far we've had two trailers in 2 years and a handful of screenshots and previews. :\

5)This is just empty PR babble, of course they're gonna amp up the impact of the game. :P

That said, i agree this game will probably sell a shitload of copies.

i never played through GTA4 because i never bought it, people said the game was repetitive and boring

but i remember playing at a friends house so here's what i think of the driving:

it feels substantial, i like how there's a separation between the guts of the car and it's cosmetic exterior

i liked how bigger cars actually felt heavier than smaller ones

inertia and resistance in the movements felt nice and weighted

the damage was damn satisfying

that's it, it was great

I can understand why some people hate the driving physics in GTAIV, I guess realistic doesn't always mean fun, but I did think they were the best in any open world driving game. Big 'yank' tanks had the body roll and oversteer expected from overpowered high cubic engines, as well as losing traction easily under heavy acceleration. I can't really remember the other vehicles as much, but I do remember that I was always happy to just drive around even though the actual story/gameplay wasn't that great.

I'll be stoked if GTAV retains similar sort of handling physics, it made high speed chases exciting to me and I even learned a couple of the radio stations playlists off by heart from the amount of driving I did. Loved the techno station with Francias Cade.

I get the feeling most of you have never driven cars at their limits (closed course, controlled environment). Most modern cars are heavy and when you really push them they understeer like crazy. Such 6/10th driving they handle great, but 9 or 10/10ths, shit is terrible.

Gta iv is not perfect or sim like, but it's a lot better than the competition. I can hardly stand saints row because of how lame the driving is.

I enjoyed the driving in IV. There's still nothing in an open world game that comes close to it.

IV balanced well between realism and keeping the gameplay fresh. Like how most cars that flipped over slowly rolled back onto the wheels. And how losing a tire made driving difficult, but fun without making it too real.

The one thing I hope V adds to the game is a horn that cars react to. You could honk your horn at cars and they never stopped or slowed down in IV. In real life if someone holds down a horn going through an intersection most cars would slow or stop.

It has everything going for it.

Except for that predecessor called IV that quite a few people hate with a passion.
To me personally it doesn't matter WHAT tiny things they changed. V would have to change almost everything IV did and I seriously doubt that. Till then I'm not even slightly interested. That's how bad IV was. And I bought the LE of IV because I got fooled by all sorts of reviews. I guess many other people remember that as well.

Does it have an option between this half-GT-half-arcade and GTA-classic driving like Mafia 2? I guess not. If Rockstar cared, they would have put that in for example.

I don't even think Rockstar could include the option for arcade control. Everything, everything seem to be effected by Euphoria. You can trip will walking on the road.

I rather liked the driving in GTA IV, but it did take some getting used to over previous installments. It has also caused no shortage of arguments between me and my brother, with him being a die hard pro GTA 3/Vice City/San Andreas person and denouncing IV for its change to vehicle handling and "abandoning the arcade feel of previous titles." To me the direction GTA IV took was good. It was not like previous titles, and if someone wanted a experience like that they could always play the Saints Row titles which cater specifically to that kind of gameplay.

They shouldn't even entertain the idea. Wasting a resource to compromise market wishes will dilute whatever vision they have and I'm glad Rockstar are a company that still has a vision, regardless of how it materialises. That should never be sacrificed for vanity.

If people want Mario Kart controls they can build a mod.

Even the mods are effected by Euphoria. There's a faster walk mod but the momentum cause the character to slide all over the place. His legs move like one of those bugs bunny cartoons. Funny to see, not cool to control.

Put me in the camp that enjoys the weighty, rewarding physics of GTAIV. Isn't there a quote regarding GTAV's driving being something that will make people who enjoy good car sims happy?

I was replaying TBOGT anyway so I gave this a whirl. Pretty easy to install and it does make the cars better, although I suspect a lot of the naysayers in this thread still wouldn't like it since they're tweaks more than a change in physics. I had a lot of fun last night with a Uranus - easy to get into a slide, easy to control, etc.

I suspect it's the type of handling GTA V will have - the same but tweaked.

According to Houser it will feel like a "racing game". I guess meaning the cars will have more control.
